Fruit Trenches:  Cultivating Subtropical Plants in Freezing Temperatures

Despite what the title might imply, the article discusses several different ways of growing citrus trees in frosty areas.  Some of them sound as though they'd be entirely within the reach of hobbyists - I admit the trenches themselves are probably too much for a backyard grower.  I was particularly interested by the techniques of 'creeping trees'.

Ever tried any of these methods?

This article was discussed a while back either on this forum or Citrusgrowersforum v2..
These techniques rely heavily on cheap labour to dig the trenches etc or care for the plants to dissipate the cold etc. remove and replace screens etc.
Modern techniques use more permanent inputs such as plastic covers, overhead irrigation, frost fans, which are not reliant on a labour force.
Not sure if the creeping tree method would be also favourable to pest and disease control in other areas where Citrus pests naturally occur.
Many new techniques favour air flow and ease of spraying, and keeping fruit away from the soil.
Who knows, maybe these ideas might translate to food growing on Mars in the future ??
