Mangosteen broken main stem

Hello everyone

 Just needing some help with my mangosteen. The main stem got broken and I’m unsure if it will regrow a new central leader. I know almost all other trees do but with the growth pattern on garcinias I’m not sure if they do or not. It’s also hard to get a good answer since so few people grow them.

 I would just pull it out and start again but it’s looking so healthy otherwise and I’d have to convince my partner that it’s better to just start again. Anyone that has actual experience with mangosteen or garcinias would be greatly appreciated. I know almost all other fruit trees will just grow a new one but garcinia are special. I’ve had it about a year and it’s had new growth but no new stem

 If this was a big property I would just leave it but this is the only space I have for a mangosteen so this is my only chance to get it right so I can’t just plant more of them. I’ve asked a few people and they say it should be ok but didn’t sound too convinced.

Chances are that it will eventually sprout out and grow a new leader. I would be patient and do not try to graft it as a solution. I grow many garcinias including mangosteen.

I also believe it could sprout a new leader. You might consider putting a wire cage around it with 10 or 20% shade cloth on the sides but open on top. The light well that creates might stimulate vertical growth. Some light fertilization might also help move things along.

I cut off the main leader of my g. brasiliensis cause I wanted to chop off an unwanted graft on top. It regrew a new leader.

It will be fine mate, I snapped the top off one of mine and it has resprouted new leader

When you say it will sprout a new leader, do you mean a new shoot will form and become the new leader? I would have thought the vertical branch in the photo would become the new leader. No experience with growing Mangosteen.

Fruit nerd - that was my hope and why I pinned it up but I’m not sure if it would work or not

Yes on mine I didn’t tie anything up a new shoot eventually started off the main stem and became the new leader.

New central leader(s) will grow back. Might take a while as mangosteen are generally slow growers outside of their native range. Attached is a photo of my Achaicharu which was cut back and has now come back with multiple leaders.

Well it managed to grow two new stems. I had already pulled it out of its in ground spot and took over a year and a half for it to happen but it did eventually grow new stems
