How many people eat mango skin?
« on: August 08, 2023, 09:16:00 PM »
I sometimes eat a piece of mango skin attached to the flesh. And I was wondering how many people actually eat mango skin intentionally. Do you eat mango skin?

I found this benefit from eating skin: "Mango skin is edible and packed with nutrients like vitamins, fiber and antioxidants. Though it may offer health benefits, it has an unpleasant taste, may preserve pesticide residues and contains compounds that may cause allergic reactions. While eating mango skin is safe for most people, it's unnecessary."

A former coworker from Venezuela brought a mango or two to work every day and often shared with me. He always ate the skin and suggested I do the same, for the nutrients. I did and found the skin palatable but unless the skin is thin and grown in my yard I'll toss those peelings into the mulch pile.

For some very juicy, fibrous varieties, I often take a bite from the tip and then squeeze the pulp out that hole. But even though I don't have a noticable allergic reaction to the sap otherwise, I've noticed the skin of some mangoes makes my mouth tingle in a somewhat allergic-feeling way, so I have never made a habit of more than a few little nibbles.

Some varieties have bitter skin, but for others, I used to eat all the skin if it was clean.
I would cut the mango into chunks so that each piece with skin had a large amount of flesh, so you are not eating just skin.
I liked the extra crunch.

This is 1st yr for me eating some skins.
Got the idea watching the great Har do so in TT video with M4 & family in India doing so with Cogshall.
1st i eat the slice of flesh, and then as i'm scraping the skin clean with teeth if it breaks, i chew it.  If it's good, keep chewing :)

I did it with those 2 + Pickering & a couple Kents.  Not all of the mentioned are always tasty.  I guess like how i ate a dozen m4, pickering, 6 cogshall & 4 dozen kents & almost none where exactly the same.  Try skin on more then one of even the same fruit.  I froze some slices with skin on.

For fresh mango...I don't. But curried mango....yesss!!! I've been eating ripe sapodilla skins tho while enjoying the fruit though (Alano and Silas Woods).

Curried mango is good but I suspect the fibrous mangos are better to use in this situation.
I guess that is what gives it its texture.
When cooking green fiberless mangos (only did it two times) you seem to end up with a sauce.

Also just a word of wisdom
Taste the skin before cooking, SE Asian mango skin (I tried CAC and NDM) was pretty bitter and I ruined a whole batch of trini-style red pickles

I ate store-bought mango- I believe it was Kent, and the skin was a little piny taste. I would it more with flesh if it were grown in my yard. Obviously, I worry about pesticides and chemicals growers spraying on them.

The skin on preserved mangos and salt mango are also pretty good.

I haven’t been able to find good salt mango for ages though. I used to find this one type that had a somewhat purple skin that wasn’t too salty. Now a days, I’ve only found the ones that are very orange and super salty.

For some mangos it's almost essential to at least chew on the skin if you want to get all of it's flavors...

I've eaten many M4 this year and have come to the conclusion that IMO the skin must be at least chewed/scraped a lot to get the best chance of a coconut taste.

Some have more edible skin than others.
NDM has such thin skin it's hard to avoid eating it if eaten out of hand, but a normal common Bowen mango have very thick skin so it's a bit on the high side on the "bitterness" scale so I don't eat it on that variety.
It really depends on the variety.
