This one is fully mature with firm brown seeds and the last couple I had that were not as sweet seem to have coloured before they were mature. They were also much smaller that this one.

Not necessarily if some nucellar embryony is going on. Some citrus and mangosteens are examples of where the 'seeds' are clones of the parent.

Soon I'll be planting our 4 russels sweet in the earth. They are also about 2ft tall.
Mike T thanks again for spreading this gem of a fruiT! Do you know if the seeds sent to Hawaii were from a pollinated fruit from a male?
I recently read that the females if unpollinated will only make female seed. Wonder if it true?
Hopefully one of us in Hawaii has male scions to share in the future.

The Hawaiian seeds came from the original trees in Russells yard and were large fruit with male pollinated seeds.They looked more like this.

Correct. Many garcinia species are able to produce fruit without pollination (see Prosea book chapter on garcinias.)

I don’t know that book, is it online? If not could you post a list of desirable garcinias that produce fruit without pollination?

While the female tree flowers well on the right the smaller male is not yet producing. The second day of spring and no rain for weeks with temps at 30c but they are looking fine.

The foliage of the male looks healthy enough and this shows the growth habit which is quite unusual.

In the photos, in the picture it looks like a big difference in the leaf shape/ size. Should I look at my ones and assess growth/leaf size for sex prediction ? All of them are the same age but some are a lot smaller.

The new terminal leaves are bigger on main growing tips like on the female plant here. They flatten after a while and there are smaller leaves of course.

Here is a 300g example of a Russell Sweet fruit. People have asked me to be more explicit in why they are different from sweet dulcis. The trees are different in shape from all dulcis not being so cone like and having a growth habit like achacha. The shoulders on the leaves are very distinctive, separate sexes. the specific appearance of the stems and quite a few other characteristics separate them. It is the taste of the fruit which really makes them unlike related Garcinias. There is no sourness and acidity is less than the sweetest dulcis and a mild peach like flavour is present.

Here is the typical foliage of dulcis which is quite different from Russells Sweet if you look at pics posted previously in this thread.The trees look very unlike each other.

Instead of the usual one or two seeds this one had 5 and was not particularly big. Tropo Stevo who is on this forum and who you have spoken to recently may have some seeds.

The biggest and oldest Russell Sweet tree around is a female about 40 years old. I had a look at the 100s of fruit on this tree today about 3 hrs ago and the biggest were almost 1lb. Here a few to look at.

The flesh yield was measured at over 75% in a medium sized fruit and would be higher for small fruit with just one or two seeds. I dont know of any other Garcinias with a yield as good.
