Prepare Pandan plant for winter
« on: November 09, 2023, 02:15:06 PM »
Hi,

I am in Socal 10B.  I have pandan plant in koi pond and it's doing great since spring.   I heard it can't handle low 40's temp.  Winter is coming and need to bring it in the house.  should i keep in water bucket or put it in potting soil?   any suggestion?

thanks,
tony

Sorry no reply here, but do you grow it in a pond?? I have it in a pot, is it better in water?

This response might be too late. But just want to share my experience. I have killed 4 pandan plant in the past during winter. But this year my pandan looks fine except some winter burn on it's leaves. It is outside in the South facing yard.
I keep it in a long pot with enough soil to cover all the root nicely. Tge pot has a good drainage. Place the pot in the corner between 2 walls so it is well tucked in and not exposed too much by cold wind. Only water in twice in 3 months, of course it got rain water during the storm.

I have had my pandan in a large bucket of water filled with river rock for 2 years. I always killed it when planted in soil but it has been vigorous in the water.

Mine survived its first winter, just in its original pot and in the shade.

I have a pandan plant in soil in a pot.  It never occurred to me to put it in water!  Which Pandanus is it?  I have a Pandanus amaryllifolius, which seems to be growing additional sideways plants!  I also tried to grow Pandanus tectorius but the baby trees always seemed to die on me, same as the Salaccas, and I’m wondering if there is a pest that targets both of them. I have other Pandanus cultivar seeds but have held off until I know if the fruits are edible (P. utilis, P. odorifer).
