Tropical Fruit Discussion / Acai not fruiting
« on: June 01, 2022, 05:07:16 AM »
Hi planted a bunch of Acai a few years back, gardener killed most of them woth weedwhacker.

One is alive and lots of sucklings too, and just excited to be back on farm and see it is flowering.

However not even a single fruit.

Can anybody help to see if this Acai is self pollinating or have any advice?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mulberries in Hawaii
« on: September 16, 2019, 09:56:20 PM »
Just me or noone is commercially growing mulberries in Hawaii.  Is there a good reason for this?  Want to set up mulberries as a hedge and windbreak for 5 acre lot.  I have seen a few mulberry trees but fruit never blackened and was small.  That is not sellable quality.

If have to will bring back my own cuttings from my trees in Thailand, but hopefully get some tips from people here.    Going to see a friends mulberry tree soon, hopefully he had a better strain.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Favorite Breadfruit Recipes
« on: August 28, 2019, 04:52:22 PM »
Aloha, what you guys cooking?
Lately I have been taking peel off, split into quarters and remove center pith, then steam 30 minutes.  Then I have my cooking ingredient to add to anything and keep in fridge.

Been doing stir fried savory (salt, pepper, oil, fish/pork etc.) , and also stir fry sweet (salt, sugar, butter) with okinawan sweet potatoes.

But I think I want to try maybe using my insta pot pressure cooker to make like a pudding with the fully ripe breadfruits.  Especially labor day coming, might be good pot luck item.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / anaphylactic shock from yellowjackets
« on: August 20, 2019, 11:31:05 PM »
no stranger to wasp stings or bee stings.   Once was trimming a tree and I had to stand tight working a boom while being swarmed.. must have been 100 stings.  Took a benadryl and went to sleep.

However today was working and I got 1-2 wasp stings from what I believe was a yellowjacket, fatty yellow wasp, that was much like a bee except larger and longer.  I tried to pinpoint how pulling weeds pissed them off.. but they refused to stop buzzing around some leaf blades.  I have seen paper wasps put eggs on banana leaves, and I got some stings from bumping those before.. but yellowjackets and grass?

Anyways after 10 minutes top of skull itched insanely, 15 minutes, swollen with hives entire arms, legs, eyes, face, ears, lips.  20 minutes difficulty breathing..  By this time I am on the way to hospital because of the breathing problems, my face is unrecognizable by now, and they took my vitals and heart rate was 160,.  Dr. telling me to calm down.. thing is I was extremely calm, body was just doing it's own thing.  So between heart rate, hyptotension, and difficult breathing, ER was best decision I think!

They gave me an epinephrine shot, benadryl, and oral cortisone, and got better, but a little shaky from epinephrine...

So, yeh.. it's possible to be allergic to yellowjackets but not other bees or wasps.  Take care guys, and keep epinephrine on farm if you can.  Got myself a prescription, so now I can stock 2 syringes on farm.  I'm at home already, but entire body is welts and hives, but at least I can breath normally and heart rate back to normal.

Hey, had a white sapote for the first time, giant sized fruit larger than a softball, picked up for $3 at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, I am about pretty sure it was from there, because of the cheap price.

They had it refrigerated, I bought and tabled it for about 4 days until it became a bit springy like an ripe avocado.  Peeled and washed it, found it was much riper than the exterior let on.  So I can see the extra care needed to watch the ripeness on these (like an avocado) .  Once opened the softness was much like peach (thick skin was holding it together mostly), so you could also say it it will ripen like a peach.

The first exterior slices off were very sweet and darkened much like the sweeter parts of a pear.  Into the interior I just ate in my hands and it became milkier (sappier)  nearer the seeds and a touch of bitterness.  Total of 4-5 large seeds in center.

Seeing as my first time, I think the fruit was good.   And the the best parts of it tasted like a good pear, however that type of sugary sweetness is not really my thing, and the center portion was not as good

I will do some more research about this tree, I read it produces heavily, so maybe that benefit is worth planting alone.

Just wondering if there is much variety in this tree, and if people would describe it differently, preference for smaller fruit, less or more ripeness, negative effects from refrigeration, etc.  And a recommendation to plant or not.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / kasturi Mango Review - anything similar?
« on: June 09, 2019, 02:25:07 AM »
Was surprised to see some Katsuri mangoes today, quite expensive, but bought 5 of them just to make sure I didn't judge them on one alone.

All I can say is that I am blown away by that spicy flavor, it hits at first, stays on tongue, and even lingers a bit after.  I absolutely love the flavor.

Everything else is a miss though -

small, expensive, flesh to seed ratio like 40/60, stringy.

Are there any other developed strains that have the spicy flavor of Katsuri without all the attributes of a wild mango?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trivia - Name that fruit (Nahiku)
« on: May 11, 2019, 09:38:52 PM »
You ever want to know something but just can't figure it out,  keeps nagging me and I still can't figure this out.

About 20 years ago I was walking around in lower Nahiku, Maui and encountered large grapefruit sized "apples" all over the road.  They came from a tall canopy tree, the only thing I saw was the bole, no lower branches at all.  Likely 60' + tall.

The fruits if I remember right were starchy, but more like a pear.  I remembered they were quite a treat, I ate 5-6 of them.  So I'm guessing they weren't poisonous.

At the time I assumed they were the tropical Wii apple, which I now know it is not.

Any idea of what this tree is?

fruits were orangish brown, other than that I can't remember much.    Very round.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / stop original tree buds on grafted tree
« on: March 09, 2019, 08:37:41 AM »
Hi, I have some topworked citrus and mango grafts, they are successful 1 year already, but I just came back to farm after 8 months to find so many branches and buds on the main bole below the graft.

Since I have been here been easy to remove, just rubbing fingers on new buds each day stops them.  But is there something I can do more longterm for when I am away from farm?

like a special paint or something?

Chanee almost market price, 80 baht kg at wholesalerd markett (50kgs+)
I was able to negotiate some for testing for 100/kg
means wholesale price is likely 50-60 baht for Chanee, undervalue government projections for 70-80.

I wish we got some more varieties, Durian Baan will likely be available 60/kg, Mongthong still steady at 100-120 straight from the growers here.

Nothing wrong with Chanee though, delicious!

Durian Ice cream now available at my local sweets place, made from Mongthong

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Almost Killed my jackfruit with 16-16-16
« on: April 28, 2018, 08:57:03 PM »
Just 1/4-1/2 cup to a 8 foot tree burned up the all the tips.  I think it will pull through though.  It looked like it was doing a huge growth spurt so I thought I would help it out.  Instead lost all new growth but old leaves are hanging in there.  In the area it is planted also have roselle, it was unaffected, so the amount of fertilizer not really over the top I think.

Any other trees people notice don't tolerate chemical fertilizer?

I think kind of relevant, since so many international exchange here...  Yesterday was quote $4.99 flat rate plus the exchange spread to send $60.  It was funded by my paypal balance.

Wanted to get some seeds.. so what will we do now... has everybody else been paying the merchant fees, is that how business is done on this forum, or has everybody been doing f&f transfers.

check it out here  https://www.paypal.com/en/webapps/mpp/ua/upcoming-policies-full
just went into effect the other day.

There are alternatives, perhaps admin can design sticky for standardized payment terms, transferwise.com looks like a cheaper alternative, but no buyer protection, but if you doing Paypal F&F there is no buyer protection anyways.

Note, this is just for international, exchanging money within US by bank or balance is still free by Paypal.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Getting Cashew tree to 'nut' not fruit...
« on: April 18, 2018, 03:34:17 AM »
Saw a post for sale about a Cashew tree vareity being sold, but it appears it is not a vareity, only has some special technique to not fruit, but to only form nuts.  How do they do this?  Or is this a special variety?  I have seem Red fruit and yellow fruit, I also have the yellow fruit kind, but mine always sets fruit 100%

By not 'fruiting' the nuts are so much larger!

hopefully pictures explain better ---

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Coconuts without Female Inflorescence
« on: April 02, 2018, 11:07:31 PM »
Came across my fb ag. feed... so sales for "mapreow" a unique coconuts, very expensive.  Coconut in Thai "mapraow".

Upon reading more, the uniqueness of the tree comes from a genetic defect that does not product female flowers, so the fruits and inflorescence look very interesting.

However was sad to read, that when planting these nuts, it will likely just revert to regular coconut, so a waste of money I guess.

Anything know anything more about this?

Here is a video showing a farmer who has two trees:  https://youtu.be/wJxaFVSvDfE

a stolen pic off google:

This is the thai word for it:  มะแพร้ว

I can not find anything in English about this, so I'll just assume it is a genetic defect that occurs in 1/100,000 or something like that.

Also a good chance I misunderstood, and it it does not have male flowers..., but I can confirm it is missing one of the sexes of flowers!  :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seedless Cempedek
« on: March 25, 2018, 09:35:28 PM »
so in the buy and sell forum some very positive review of seedless Cempedek, I have been seeing these very often the past year for sell here, grafts.  Now this week have ag. fair at the ag. university in my region, and I'm thinking now to pick up one.

I have very limited land.. just over 1 acre, so what everybody think?  Seedless Cempedek the best thing to happen to Cempedek or what?

My limited experience eating Cempedek is eating a very specialized local varieity from the town of Janpa, which is also the name of the fruit Janpa.  Some of the ripe aftertaste I don't like so much.  But it is usually deep fried here whole with the fruit, battered with flour and egg.  That is pretty good, especially the nut inside.  Long story short.  I am not a fan of eating that Janpa (Champada is standard Thai) ripe.

Here is some pictures, in case anybody knows what this variety is.
