Tropical Fruit Discussion / Future/Current Space Considerations for Figs and Citrus in my SoCal Yard

Well,

This year has been a bust on my fig trees because of the black fig fly. All but one of my figs so far have been infected - 2 in ground and 3 potted trees.

Went and looked at my multi-grafted orange/citrus tree and noticed more Asian citrus psyllids hanging out after getting rid of them couple years ago. Peeked over my neighbors fence and noticed their neglected citrus trees are severely infested. Seems like a matter of time for HLB infection.

So....for all you in Cali, are you still putting up the good fight? I'm at the point where I think I may want to pull them rather then dealing with disease/invasive flies. I would hate to lose years worth or growth on other trees that do not have these current issues.

What are your thoughts?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Booth Cherimoya Fruit not Developing/Ripening

Bought a 3 gallon Booth Seedling from a nursery a few years ago. Tree is about 8-10 ft now and I have 5-6 different varieties of cherimoya and atemoya on it. I've had Fino de Jete and Pierce branches produce fruit as usual. But, the rootstock fruit do not seem to develop all the way. They just stop growing. I think the largest one last year was about the size of a billiards ball.

All were hand pollinated and are on different parts of the tree. I thinned the fruit heavily this year so I could make sure that was not the issue. I only kept 8 fruit on it this year since I have another fruiting tree. Still same result.

And here is a picture of a pierce that was pollinated about 3 weeks after that fruit:



Anyone else experience this? Just a bad fruit on this rootstock? I assume I may need to do heavy pruning this year to top work this tree. Not too excited if that's the case.

Also, LM3 doesn't seem to keep up with the cherimoya grafts on all my trees. Not as vigorous, I guess. Will probably axe them but try to graft on a small seedling. The super AP has no problem keeping up.

On another note, hoping this seedling tree is a winner. Fast growth, handling the heat, and set fruit fast.

are from 2 year old vines and are blooming age. The PG has a bloom on it now. S-8 measures 5' from soil to tip and the PF measures 7'. Can get multiple cuttings from them.

Came back from a camping trip with the family and proceeded to go check on some of my trees. It was dusk and I was anticipating about 20-30 blooms from my dragon fruit plants, so went to see if flowers were going to open. Well, instead I find 2 of the plants were severely damaged.

I noticed that my neighbor had his rat hotel palm trees trimmed, and that either the palm tree seed pods and/or palm fronds had fell on the plants ( one of my S8's and Physical graffiti). Unfortunately, about 40-50% mass was damaged or broken. Tree trimmers appear to have picked up the heavy stuff but crap everywhere. Lost a years growth. Neighbor didn't care but I'll call the company tomorrow.

Think this is the only place where people understand how much time we invest to grow...so it goes...

Cuttings that were trimmed. Few are a little sunburned and are this year's growth, so please know they are not mature cuttings but will certainly root and grow just fine. Pickup in San Diego.

No resellers, please. I'm not looking for someone to come and resell for some ridiculous price(s). Hoping to help someone establish some DF.

I'm going to be trimming a few vigorous tips off my ST Mango tree. These are pushing hard (see photos). Would like to trade with someone in San Diego that has a variety that is known to do well in our climate. Looks like there is a good weather window next week to start some grafts before the cool down. Let me know if you want to trade.

Just came back from Isla de Cedros (Cedros Island). This is a remote island off the coast of Mexico about 300 miles south of the US border on the Pacific coast side.

It is a small community with about 2000 local residents. There is a major water shortage on the island but the locals seem to grow plenty of mango trees with reclaimed water and no extra fertilizer. Just plant and grow was what one of the locals told me. They didn't know the varieties but there were a few. Definitely Atulfo or manilla and Hadens  and one that looked like Atkins.

Was difficult to get lots of pictures since we were riding in the back of a truck but I was able to snap a couple. Guess, sometimes it's best to K.I.S.S.

Wasn't quite sure if this was a beneficial Nitidulidae beetle that was in my Cherimoya Flower. I was collecting pollen and he fell off into the jar with the petal.

I know ladybugs get all the credit, but green lacewing larvae are awesome at destroying aphid and spider mite populations around here. Got a few good pics of them in action.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Adding Chelated Nutritional Spray if Trees look Healthy?`

My fruit trees look healthy for the most part. Growing fine and no major deficiencies showing right now. I use organic mulch/compost fertilizers and top dressing as well as complete fruit tree slow release chemical fertilizers. I've never added a strict micronutrient regiment. Should I include these even if trees look fairly healthy? I don't want to overdo it and cause other issues (lockout or burns), but if it could give an extra boost, I would consider it. Thoughts?

I'm making 4 new posts with 2x12 raised beds. My friend sold his hydroponics store and I no longer have access to cheap quality potting  soil.

I'm too busy to mix my own mix these days, so I was looking at bulk soil from Evergreen nursery (local commercial nursery that sells bulk soil). They have a citrus/palm/cactus mix as well as a raised bed mix. They do not list exactly what is in each one.

Has anyone used anything similar with success without any additional amendments to start off? Or used a cheaper all inclusive bagged potting soil? I've got about 16-20 cubic feet, so it would be pricey for premium bagged potting soil.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / An Ode to my Two Hour Lamb Hass Tree

Well, I was excited to finally pick up a new 15 gal avocado tree from Clausen nursery in Vista, ca.

Little did I know I would have to protect this tree like I was driving miss Daisy. Weaving around crazy divers on the way to the freeway, I finally lost her as I swerved around an Uber driver who stopped in the middle of the road to check  his phone.

The trunk snapped as the pot moved in the trunk. At least I have some good $75 compost and dirt.

Ok, ok, not really an Ode, more of a vent session. I don't think I'm destined to keep an avocado tree. At least she was with me for a couple hours.  :D Next time, I'm bringing the 1 ton pickup to protect these trees.

What tree pickup fails have you had??

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon Fruit Planting for a 13X13 area Questions and Advice

Good afternoon,

I am looking at planting some of my 7 varieties of DF in the upcoming weeks. More than likely, just constructing the 4X4 posts in their permanent location behind my retaining wall. Please see picture of the small area. I was thinking 4 plants on a 5' post with 2X2X1 raised cedar or redwood planters.

Is this area doable for 4 plants? When I had my DF in pots, I could squeeze more plants in that location but I think I will grow these out larger. How many posts would you place in the area? I will have a growing mango tree as you can see in the picture as well, but I am not concerned with it for a while (if ever).

Also, there is a massive date palm in my neighbors yard that litters the area with nuts and the rats love them, so i am going to add exposed landscape fabric around the raised beds to make cleanup easier. Has anyone added any landscape fabric around their raised beds? I do not want to make the ground too warm as temps can sometimes reach 100 degrees in summer. It is impossible to clean up the nuts with the mulch I currently have there.

Good evening,

Glad to finally join this forum. I bought an Atulfo Mango tree at Clausen Nursery in Vista, CA last winter. It has really taken off on my south facing hill in San Diego (zone 10a).

I've set my plants on drip and fertilized it twice. I did have a few blooms and flushes. I left only two mango's on but I think they got anthracnose and I cut them off.

As for the pruning, Clausen Nursery told me to leave the tree as is with the multiple trunks. Should I do this or cut it down to one trunk to form more of a tree? I'm more interested in production than looks, if that matters. Also, any other pruning I should do? This is my first Mango tree, so learning as it grows.

Lastly, I am thinking about getting another mango tree. Any other varieties I should consider that stays relatively small ( under 20') or easily pruned for my zone?
