Tropical Fruit Discussion / Well, that took a while -- 3-month mango graft
« on: September 25, 2023, 08:31:40 PM »
It took three months for this mango graft to push. It's a Lemon Meringue Seedling scion (from a 6-year-old tree that has never fruited) grafted onto a one-year-old Lemon Meringue seedling.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New mulberry graft fruiting -- remove fruit?
« on: September 05, 2023, 08:00:00 PM »
Was fortunate enough to score mulberry scions from Kaz (sc4001992). Some of the grafts are already beginning to push, including Red Himalayan and this Black Pakistan:

As this is a new graft, I'm guessing I shouldn't let it hold these fruit? When should the fruit be removed? And when is it safe to let it hold fruit? Thanks!

I have a 4' Suriname Cherry in the ground that needs to be moved. It's been in the ground a couple years already, and of course has to have the best Suriname Cherries in my yard. Anyone have experience moving established Suriname Cherries? Any advice on making this successful? It doesn't have to be moved right away, so if it's better to wait till winter or next spring, I can do that. Thanks!

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Plum in New Jersey park?
« on: August 11, 2023, 03:14:53 PM »
A friend in northern New Jersey sent pics of a small plum he found in a park. Said the inside was bright green, had the texture and juiciness of a ripe plum, but no sweetness. Any thoughts as to what kind it is?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ficus triangularis edible?
« on: August 08, 2023, 09:02:57 PM »
Noticed my Ficus triangularis had little figs on it. Of course, when searching on the interwebs about edibility, some sites say it's not edible, some say it is edible. Anyone here know for sure? Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best Mango/s 2023
« on: June 24, 2023, 07:57:55 PM »
We've had Pickering, Guava, Lemon Meringue, Dwarf Hawaiian, a Haden seedling, and Sugarloaf thus far.

Some Pickerings were bland, but others were at the top of their game with creamy texture and coconut undertones.

Lemon Meringues were amazing.

Guavas were good, but last year they were amazing.

Dwarf Hawaiian had a little Carrie undertone and were otherwise not memorable.

The Haden seedling was bland.

Sugarloaf was picked a little later than ideal, but we're really impressed with the pineapple and pina colada flavor.

Sugarloaf wins 2023 for us.

Second place goes to Lemon Meringue.

A friend of mine had a couple mango trees get destroyed in Hurricane Ian. Both began sending out multiple new shoots from the rootstock. One is very aggressive and one is not so much.

I would like to graft some different types on these, but would like input on the best method/s.

This is the vigorous "tree"--I'm now thinking it's actually multiple trees:

What would experienced grafters recommend? Thinning out the multiple trunks to, say, three? Or leaving all trunks? Or . . . ???

I've only done cleft grafting, but am thinking I'll need to do veneer with this.

Any recommendations regarding making this a successful project would be most welcome. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Introducing mangos to babies?

Considering some people's severe allergic reaction to mangos, is there a recommended way to introduce mangos to babies? Thanks for any advice!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Wow, that's a big Jaboticaba tree!

This is not my pic, it's David Fairchild's, but dang, I didn't realize they get *that* big!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Injured bark -- what to do?
« on: May 16, 2023, 05:36:29 PM »
Finally getting my post-Ian roof installed. A piece of metal tossed off during the install injured the trunk of a seedling Baptiste Mango tree. I Buddy Taped it back in place, but am now wondering if that was the right thing to do? Here's a pic:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / First ever Cherimoya
« on: May 07, 2023, 08:48:06 PM »
Went to a grocery store in Naples, FL, called Sprouts today and they had Cherimoya in, and we got one. We never had one. Till now.

Maybe not the best example, but it wasn't funky from being overripe. Was on the firm side of soft. It was good, with undertones of pineapple and peach and pear. With nothing else to compare it to, we thought it was okay, but like Sugar Apple and Soursop more. Definitely disagree with Mark Twain, who thought it the most delicious fruit known to men.

Unreal how many flowers my Suriname Cherries have. Have five trees in full flower now.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone growing Pouteria macrophylla?
« on: March 28, 2023, 08:44:49 PM »
Just got seeds in and was wondering what people's experience has been growing this? Namely, growth rate, size, temp range, time to fruit, etc. Particularly interested in Florida growers' experiences, but would like any input at all. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are these seedlings Bael Fruit?
« on: March 21, 2023, 02:50:06 PM »
I've looked at leaves online but don't feel confident I've made a match. Seeds were from Fruit & Spice Park, but I planted so many different things and lost labels in the storm. Is anyone growing Bael Fruit? Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Catalina Avocado flowering question
« on: February 13, 2023, 07:39:13 PM »
Is this the start of Avocado flowers? It seems to be an insane amount. I just got the tree at the end of summer, so I'm guessing it shouldn't be allowed to hold fruit. Is the process the same as Mangos--let the fruit get pea sized then strip off? Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Can a Mango Tree change it's mind?
« on: December 31, 2022, 06:46:45 PM »
Weird question that I hope I can articulate. I searched for an answer on the interwebs, but couldn't find one.

Most of my mature Mango trees looked like they were going to have a flush of growth going into last week's cold weather. As a lot of trees did indeed push new growth just prior to the cold, I'm guessing the swelling buds on the mature trees are (were?) going to be new leaves. But since we had the cold, could the tree "change its mind" and convert new leaves into flower panicles? Is this what Mixed Bloom is?

Just a question that came to me as I wandered the yard hoping all mature trees bloom.

Thanks!

What type are these? Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What to do with all these Barbados Cherries?!
« on: November 28, 2022, 01:49:12 PM »
I suddenly have a lot of Barbados Cherries and wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to what to do with all the fruits. They're tasty right off the tree but I can't keep up. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is anyone growing Mammee Apple?
« on: November 23, 2022, 06:59:00 AM »
Is anyone growing Mammee Apple? I have a couple seedlings I plan on putting in the ground next spring. I've gathered it's cold sensitive, though read on Pine Island Nursery's website that its damage temp is 30°.

Any insight as to container culture?

We've had the fruit on a couple occasions at the Fruit & Spice Park and it was an immediate favorite. I'm hoping to grow my very own.

Any insight on growing this tree would be much appreciated, especially zone-pushing and container-growing perspectives.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What Do Coconut Cream Mango Leaves Smell Like?
« on: November 15, 2022, 08:18:33 PM »
I have a Coconut Cream seedling whose leaves don't smell like a Coconut Cream mango. The leaves have kind of an "off" Indian-type (aka piney) smell. It makes me nervous the fruit won't be good. What do real Coconut Cream leaves smell like?

On a side note, I've gotten the widest range of leaf smells from my Sugarloaf seedlings. Some seedling leaves smell like pineapple-type mangos, some like Indochinese-type mangos, some like Indian-type mangos.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Should I paint this Kwai Muk's trunk?
« on: October 29, 2022, 07:50:00 PM »
My seedling Kwai Muk I got from NoFo Groves took a beating in Hurricane Ian. It was actually knocked over, but because it was recently planted, didn't suffer root damage. It's starting to put out new growth, but the trunk is pretty bare and sees a lot of sunlight. Should I paint it with 1/2 white flat latex and 1/2 water to protect it from sunburn? Thanks!

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Any idea as to what kind of Persimmon?
« on: October 18, 2022, 04:07:02 PM »
These are from Citrus County, FL. I'm guessing Hachiya or Saijo? Thanks!
