Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Avocado rootstock
« on: August 06, 2024, 07:40:16 PM »
Planted a few Florida green avocados to use as rootstock and decided not to bother grafting avocados. These are three gallon healthy starts. Asking $5 each. Must be a local sale, will not ship. I'm in the Punta Gorda area, but head to Bonita Springs area quite often and sometimes up to Hernando County, FL. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What are you doing in 2024?
« on: April 28, 2024, 06:56:55 AM »
What's new for 2024?

I am attempting to top-work my Ice Cream Mango tree to multiple other varieties (Candy Corn, Cecilove, Fairchild, Kook Lom Krong, Pina Colada). So far one Fairchild scion died and only one of two Kook Lom Krong scions have pushed:

Of the far too many seeds I've ordered, Pouteria salicifolia has been most robust, and I planted four seedlings out in the yard (one promptly chewed off at the base by a resident rabbit). It has since resprouted, fortunately.

Plan to put out in the yard a Pineapple Pleasure Mango, a seedling Pouteria macrophylla 'Gigante', Kohala Longan, and some Dwarf Ambarella seedlings.

Plan to cut down most of my Carissa macrocarpa, taking out some Suriname Cherries and possibly one Barbados Cherry, and weak Jackfruit seedlings.

What are other people doing??

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Does this Longan trunk look healthy?
« on: April 20, 2024, 09:15:15 AM »
On the clearance rack of a Walmart somewhere on the west coast of Florida was this Kohala Longan. At $15, it was an offer I couldn't refuse. Does this look healthy? Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fried Egg Tree, Oncoba spinosa
« on: April 10, 2024, 04:17:55 PM »
Anyone else growing this? I grabbed a couple from Top Tropicals when they were on super sale. The Sri Lankan Weevils love them, and the spines on the tree make the weevils difficult to remove. Still, this little tree was looking particularly good this morning:

Not expecting much in terms of fruit taste.

Came across these two pests in my yard last night. First time seeing either here.

Love this plant, hoping it thrives in the ground here. It has grown quite a bit since receiving it at the end of July 2023. Plant is from abimael777 (thanks, abimael777!)

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Thornless Blackberries
« on: February 10, 2024, 08:27:18 AM »
Bought a couple plants from Walmart last year and forgot about them, to the point where I ran over one with the lawnmower. The other survived in some overgrown weeds and rewarded me thus:

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Advice on Red Mulberry pruning
« on: December 30, 2023, 04:25:48 PM »
My Red Mulberry has shed its leaves, giving a clearer picture of its structure. How should I prune this (if at all)? I'd like a smaller tree ultimately. The thickest part is 1 1/2". Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Plant ID
« on: December 24, 2023, 10:50:53 AM »
This is not my fault. I bought a Katuk from Top Tropicals during one of their recent sales, and this little guy was in the container, so I potted it up. Is it anything worth keeping? Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit ID?
« on: December 24, 2023, 10:18:22 AM »
Found in Ft Lauderdale, will try to get a pic of tree and leaves later.

Fruit are about 1" tall by 1/2" wide and contain a single brown seed with white at the top of the seed.

Any idea?

Not sure what happened, but all the leaves look like they're dying and are starting to fall off. We had a dip into the upper 40s recently, and ongoing drought, but everything around it is still green and happy (there's a Cattley Guava and NDM#4 in the background). Would the sudden weather change cause this? Any idea what's going on? It's a tiny 4-year old seedling (in ground maybe 2 1/2 years) that was doing well till now . . .

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Noni seeds
« on: October 28, 2023, 12:49:24 PM »
Seeds will be shipped dry.

Just had the fruit this morning. So delicious, like intense broccoli cheddar soup, yum.

Have 2 batches of like five seeds each.

Free to first two people in the lower 48 (can I legally ship to CA? If not, then no CA) who want them and respond to this thread (in case pm isn't working), first come first served.

My native mulberry has a sizable side branch(?)/waterspout(?)/sucker(?). Should I trim it off or let it be? See photo (it's the "trunk" on the left):

Second question: my Suruga Persimmon has a sucker from below the graft. It looks healthier than the grafted part. Should I take it off or leave it and graft a stick of Suruga onto it? (If so, is cleft graft okay?)? It's the shoot on the right.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Well, that took a while -- 3-month mango graft
« on: September 25, 2023, 08:31:40 PM »
It took three months for this mango graft to push. It's a Lemon Meringue Seedling scion (from a 6-year-old tree that has never fruited) grafted onto a one-year-old Lemon Meringue seedling.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New mulberry graft fruiting -- remove fruit?
« on: September 05, 2023, 08:00:00 PM »
Was fortunate enough to score mulberry scions from Kaz (sc4001992). Some of the grafts are already beginning to push, including Red Himalayan and this Black Pakistan:

As this is a new graft, I'm guessing I shouldn't let it hold these fruit? When should the fruit be removed? And when is it safe to let it hold fruit? Thanks!
