Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Help in identifying fruit bush

@Lovetoplant,
It's ~8ft tall, after ~5-7 years.  I don't think she was pampering it; so, it may be small compared to others for its age.  She bought it as a small seedling at a Hawaiian festival, she believes, in Lawndale or in the Southbay area.

@MikeT
Thanks for the info. I think she wants to trim it back; so, it's good to hear it can be kept in check.

My sister said that she tasted fruit from a friend's wampee.  She recalls that the fruit was much smaller and more sour than the current fruit from my sister's tree.  That's why my sister didn't recognize her tree as a wampee.  So, there seems to be variability in fruit size and sweetness/sourness. My sister was lucky in getting her seedling.

@brian,
Sorry for the late reply, but I was waiting to visit with my sister so I could taste the fruit myself.

When you initially bite into it there is a hint (and smell) of resin along with a mixture of sweet and sour which then ends sour with a little astringency.  It was reminiscent of a kumquat but with the added astringency (and minus the fleeting resin).  It is very tasty.  We're going to plant out the seeds.

I agree with Epicatt2.  My sister has a currey leaf plant.  You can easily tell that the wampee leaves are much broader.

I was incorrect in stating that she bought the plant 2 years ago.  Apparently, she bought it about 5-7 years ago.  So, your seedling may need a couple more years to fruit.  I hope it gives you good fruit - it's worth it.

Jaboticaba45,

I just spoke with her, and she said that it was tart and reminiscent of citrus (perhaps grapefruit).  So, it looks like you are correct.

Thanks for figuring this out for us!

Hi, All,

I'm hoping your collective knowledge can help my sister identify her plant.  It was sold to her as a june plum two years ago.  This year it fruited, and based on the fruit it was clearly not a june plum.

The fruit is round and contains multiple seeds encapsulated by jell-like flesh.

Any information would be much appreciated!

I received my cedar by cherry seedling today. It and the gratis surinam cherry seedlings were packed well and look healthy.  Looking forward to find out what they taste like.  Thanks, Kevin, for shipping so quickly.
