Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Ways to protect your citrus trees in ground

Do you have some type of heat in there?   Also a strategy.....I was thinking about wrapping a tree in christmas lights then surround straw or leaves next and possibly styrofoam, bubble wrap  or frost cloth on the outside on nights that get below 20 degrees.  Anyones thoughts on the order of application?

Mike Adams
I have to add heat when outside temperature of less than 20F.  My currant Greenhouse will have a thermal outlet that turns on at 35F and off at 45F.  I will have a used Microwave fan plugged in to blow air from my unheated basement into the GH for heat.  My newest pictures.

My setup has,  for good insulation 4 layers of glass.

Just a few and that is about 1/3 of it's total production.  I get the same volume of one "cutie" mandarin.  My lemon tree of the same size produced 74 lemons in 1 year for a total weight of 60 pounds.

9 year old Fukushu left out of green house for failure to fruit.  9 feet tall 5 foot diameter heavily branched.

How would you describe the taste difference between a Marumi and Nagami kumquat

Very nice pictures

I have lost track of each of 4 Mreiwa trees.  The first fruits pick came in 1.5 years with 2 fruits.  The next year one of the trees produced 30 fruit at 3 years while another produced 2 fruit at 3 years.  This tree is 5.5 years old.  They are very hard to grow and suffer many setbacks.

kumquat seedlings need more and brighter light to grow and because the grow so slowly they are much more prone to damp off

valentine drops most all flowers for in ground trees and for potted tree they often keep flowering till they die.  It will drop golf ball size fruit to get energy to continuing its flowering.  I have to pick very small buds if I want the tree to hold fruit

Most trees get stripped of there fruit before they are ripe so the seeds have to be ready before the fruit is ripe

I accelerated mine by growing in heated well light enclosure to get 3 years growth in 1 year.

In another 8 months I picked the tree's first 2 kumquats.

A second NZL on sour orange has emerged

73
By that time you will spend more money on your tree than to buy the fruit at the market.  There are other fruit trees to grow.  Grow it indoors.
