Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is eugenia Florida self fertile?
« on: February 01, 2022, 11:46:07 PM »
I purchased seeds a few years back of e. Florida.  They sat in the ground for about a year and then early this fall, they all seemed to pop up at the same time.
My property is small.  I want to keep the minimum I need and then share the rest with any board members in Phoenix metro.

I have a very large male kei apple at my and I am desperately trying to find a female so I can get fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need advice on whether to ask for a refund
« on: January 16, 2022, 12:59:51 AM »
This isn't tropical, but, I think I'll get more views here and I need advice.   I purchased at Cox's orange pippen grafted apple tree and it came with about 95% of the graft broken.  There is still a tiny amount.  I want opinions if I should demand a refund/or new plant or will it recover?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Taste of eugenias
« on: October 19, 2021, 12:46:12 AM »
The reason I got into Eugenias here in AZ originally is because when I moved out here in 2012, I asked my son what kind of tree to plant and he wanted a cherry tree.  Of course at the time, you could not grow cherries out here.  So I did some research and it said for cherry flavor, do cherry Rio grande, grumichama, or acerola.  Well, 9 years later, my grumichama and eugenia calycina continue to grow like snails, my acrrola tastes more like a tart raspberry than a cherry.  I know have a Nadia cherry plum and crimson cherry to plant over the winter and my son is off to college next year.  Kind of funny how things go.
But that leads me to my question, are there any eugenias or any other tropical fruit that tastes like an actual cherry?  I have heard many descriptions of a fruits taste on here, but I do not remember anyone saying a certain fruit tasted like a sweet cherry.

My tarocco tree has 1 orange, it's first.  Not expecting anything to great from the first ever fruit.  But what is the proper time to pick and what should the fruit look like when it is ready.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question on guava variety
« on: October 04, 2021, 12:49:06 AM »
I have a good spot for a dwarf guava in my garden.  For people that have grown both, which would recommend, p. Striatulum or p. Firmum.

Looking for something grafted or air layered.  Not concerned about variety, I have one already in bloom, looking for a pollinator.

I am horrible at growing from seed.  So, I get my best germination rates when I plant seeds and forget about them.  However, the problem often becomes later ID.  Can anyone tell me what these 3 seedlings might be?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Green Sapote
« on: March 23, 2021, 01:58:21 AM »
Does anyone in the states grow green sapote?  I would to try, but I live in phoenix metro.  I know it is a high elevation plant, not sure if it could take our heat or handle our 28 degrees maybe one or 2 nights a year.
Would test it myself, but they are expensive.

Citrus General Discussion / Jackson grapefruit
« on: March 08, 2021, 01:07:57 AM »
Has anyone on here tried or is growing a Jackson grapefruit?   Saw one for sale and the flavor profile sounded interesting.  But, thought I would ask since most sellers make their fruit sound incredible.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dwarf mango
« on: February 11, 2021, 12:24:11 AM »
Ok, I had a dwarf mango I ordered from Logee's.  It was doing great and had started to bloom.  I had the tree at my mother's because I don't have a window with sunlight.
Well, unbeknownst to me, she put that pot inside a sealed pot and the leaves started to droop.   So, the more they drooped, the more she watered.  By the time she thought it was a good time for me to look at, she had watered it so much that she probably could have drowned aquatic plants.
So, I am in the market again for another dwarf mango.
Looking for suggestions on a new dwarf
1. Want productivity
2. Want good flavor.
Will more than likely keep it in a pot.
Looking for recommendations on variety, on places to purchase online or if anyone on here has one for sale.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Should I let this mango fruit
« on: February 02, 2021, 12:27:49 AM »
This is my cotton candy mango tree in Scottsdale,  AZ.  Been in ground 3 full years.  I have not let it bloom, as it was not that large when I purchased it.  Is it large enough to let it fruit this year, or wait?

Citrus General Discussion / Best rootstock for phoenix
« on: January 13, 2021, 01:05:19 AM »
I have been thinking of grafting different citrus varieties.  Have gotten some seeds and plan on mulitigrafting.
Question, does anyone know what is the best dwarfing rootstock for Phoenix,  AZ?  Obviously we have drought, but anything I plant will be watered.  We have very tough clay, alkaline soil.

Citrus General Discussion / How to control thrips
« on: December 31, 2020, 01:07:18 AM »
They are kind of out of control with my citrus.  And, they seem to go back and forth with my rose bushes,  and that irritates me even more.  I heard you cannot really get rid of them forever, but, I would like a plan to more or less keep it under control.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eugenias
« on: November 20, 2020, 12:19:37 AM »
I am really interested in eugenias.  They are a good size for my back yard and I love how they look.
They are not the easiest to locate, so, I would like to I would to narrow varieties I want to purchase.
Currently I have corg nelita, savannah cherry, pitomba, grumichama, e. Ligustrina, rainforest plum, a couple pitanga's,  and cedar bay cherry.
Any recommendations on other varieties to add?
I am pretty, only interested in eating fruit out of hand.  Not interested in making a juice or anything like that.
Thanks for advice!

Citrus General Discussion / Question on Kishu mandarins
« on: November 20, 2020, 12:09:19 AM »
I have a kishu mandarin in my backyard.  It has not fruited yet and I was curious to see how the fruit tastes.  So, I bought a box of them online.  They looked cool and were the size I expected.  Very easy to peel....but, I was very disappointed in the flavor.  It was sweet, but, besides that fairly bland.
Just wanted to see what other people think of the fruit.  Did I just get a bad batch or is this what I am to expect from the fruit.
If it always this bland, I may take the tree down and plant something better.

I had purchased a lemon guava on clearance a few years back.  I had heard it had a pleasant lemony flavor.  Well the one I have basically tastes like dirt.  Absolutely horrible.
I had eventually planned on purchasing a strawberry guava, but, decided not too due to the lemon guava fruits.
Did i just get a bad plant or do they all taste horrible.  Are strawberry guava fruit good?  And, are their improved varieties for sale?  Thanks.
