Mulberry varieties
« on: September 08, 2021, 09:39:21 AM »
Hello,

I live in Germany and I am collecting mulberry varieties from all around the world.
Still my focus is on varieties that have huge fruit and a good taste.

I am already owning the following varieties:

Galicja
Shelly
Black Prince
Agate
Carman
Gerardi Dwarf
Miss Kim
Wild Morus Nigra
Mulle
Mathildes Traum
Wellington
Illinois Everbearing
Collier
Gelso Bianco
Gelso Nero
Gelso Rosso
Gelso Sangue e Latte
Wild Morus kagayamae
Pakistan Red
Pakistan Weiß
Guoxian No.1
Seedless Big Ten
Osmanthus Honey
Large White Pearl
White Jade King
Portugal (may be the same as Austurkey)
Taiwan Long
Shandong
Bulgarian variety without a real name called 'Mesten' (similar to Sangue e Latte but even bigger fruit)
ShangriLa
Schwarze aus Möttingen

I am looking for some more varieties, that can be shipped to Germany.

If someone here like to share or knows a place to buy that can ship oversea, I would be thankful.

Sadly I could not try most of them yet, since I just started to collect mulberry varieties some few years ago. I just can tell that most of them are really rare to get and have bigger fruit than most common mulberry varieties.

I am not sure to which variety you refer as "Persian mulberry" but here in Germany we refer to some Morus Nigra as "Persian". I already own a wild Morus Nigra and the oldest living mulberry tree in Germany, that is documented over 1000 years old named "Mathildes Traum". We also refer to Morus macroura as "Persian" sometimes, but mostly they are called "Pakistan" here. Like Pakistan white, red, black and Taiwan Long and so on...

I am mostly proud to own this very rare variety with huge fruits.

Yes, the bloody color on your hand and look of the fruit tell me that this is clearly a Morus Nigra.
Here in Germany it is also said that Morus Nigra is one of the tasties mulberry of all.

As already mentioned I own a wild morus Nigra and a variety called "Mathildes Traum", I think they should be quite similar to the Persian Mulberry.

Do you maybe know a place where I can get Thai Dwarf or World`s Best beeing shipped to Germany? I know that the taste is not the best from what I have heard, but still I want to give it a try, becaise it is total unknown here in Germany.

I am proud having the chinese variety shown in the video, because it is a variety, that is currently absolut unknown in most parts of the world with huge fruit.
"Mathildes Traum" is also a very unknown variety in most of the world I assume, but here in Germany it is really easy to get it, because many plant nurseries are selling it, since it was propagated from the over 1000 years old tree that is still allive. Still, true Morus Nigra varieties are quite common here in german plant nurseries and you can also find some old trees.

As I said most of my mulberry trees are currently to young to bear fruit. I just got fruit from "Mulle", "Sangue e Latte", "Gelso Nero" and "Gelso Bianco" so far. Most other mulberry varieties I have seen in other gardens in this region. We also have here a parkway with some approximately 300 years old Morus Alba types, I took some cuttings from these, but I did not mention them in the varieties I have listed because I did not give them a name yet.

I am not quite sure why it was necessary to delete all posts, but anyway back to my questions:

Does anyone here knows a place were I can order interesting mulberry varieties that are not already own in my list and that can be shipped oversea?

From what I have read I am quite interested in Thai Dwarf and World`s Best, but were are surely more interesting varieties that I do not own.

I am also fine with just mentioning plant nurseries that offer different mulberry varieties. I can then ask the shop owner about oversea shipping.

All help is welcome!

Thank you  :)

I haven't been able to taste fruit of all varieties yet, but of most in my collection.

My favorite so far is the variety "Saharanpur".
They are incredibly sweet and have no acidity, the aroma is very reminiscent of peach and Greengages, especially the cultivar "Große Grüne Reneklode".

But most mulberries have a very good taste for me, the diversity in taste is a very nice thing.

Thank you for expanding my knowledge of mullberries, I wasn't aware so many varieties existed!  Do you have them organized by taste (sweet, acid, balanced ) and by size of fruit?

Unfortunately I haven't had the time yet to do such a listing, but most of my varieties have quite big fruit, like this variety:

Witan,

Wow!  What an amazing collection!  Mulberries are definitely one of my favorites to grow.  I have been collecting as many different varieties as I can but doesn't compare to your list.  I wish we had access to all those cultivars here.  What are the names of the alba varieties in your pictures?  Those are beautiful!

Thank you  :) It was quite hard for me to get some of this rare mulberry varieties, in fact I may be the only person in the western world owning some of the mentioned varieties on my list.

The Alba varieties I posted are called "N2" and "White Bursa" I am still looking to find a way to get them. The only person I know owning them is quite hesitant to trade or sell them to me...

I am out looking for wild mulberries in ChicagoLAND area (we get -20F or -28 C) deja vu

Just outside The airport (Midway /BNSF train (home ) I found a wild sour one , but not sure if fully ripe (they looked like it)

I do have some wild ones (white hybridized with our native red)

They fruit later in Mid August (not early July or mid July ) (I am looking for such on forum as well.)

Ever think of trading pollen ?

Keep in Mind (Morus) Mulberries also have disease you do not hear about
Pop corn Disease on fruit & others on twigs ...

Thank you  :)

I see you like sweet all the ones around are just sweet
I was looking more for a sour flavor ?

If they dry on the tree that is one characteristic I am looking for as well
(that is different for different uses ) -- I may have one(and seeds) , but it's new to me so not sure yet

Most Morus Rubra Hybrids have a more sour taste, also true Morus Nigra are said to have a really nice sour taste. You can also pick black fruiting Morus Alba while beeing slightly underripe, in this state, they are also quite sour.
