Anyone willing to send one seed to me
« on: September 02, 2022, 07:44:36 PM »
Anyone willing to send me just one seed of any tropical fruit for just a dollar? I’m  just only  willing to pay one dollar for the whole order itself including shipping.

Thanks.

Asifh, I see you're new here.

While there are many very generous people on this forum, this type of post is not in good taste. You're asking for donations of not just the seed, but also the postage fees and someone's time.

Many people here have really good stuff. Things you can't get anywhere else, along with tons of helpful knowledge. Respect that and just simply go to the Buy Sell Trade area of the forum and purchase some seeds there for the price + shipping people are asking.

You could also buy Tropical fruit locally and keep the seed.
Mangoes, Custard Apples, Pummelos,Avocados ?? These are reasonably available in supermarkets or specialty groceries.
This can be an inexpensive way to practice germinating and transplanting tropical fruit seedlings.
Some could be good as rootstocks for grafting.
I grew Tamarinds from an Indian grocery, also various spices, and Supermarket Mangoes back in 1986.

Couldn't agree more. This type of behavior will not win Asifh any fans on the forum, which is a shame for him because the forum is filled with growers who, while they do not give away seeds, take the time to give away very valuable growing advice to other growers who are, for the most part, complete strangers.

At least Asifh is willing to pay for a seed this time. I remember him asking for a free grumichama seed right after he joined, which seemed rather gauche, in my opinion.

W.,  not completely true about people on the forum not giving away seeds.
I know people who do (and will even pay for shipping in some cases), I have been on both ends of such arrangements (giving to or receiving from forum members).
... but they will not sell for a dollar, and it has nothing to do with the money.

I imaging he will get more response if he asked nicely (for free) than offering to pay one dollar.

The problem I have is getting the money. I don't know how to use these electronic payment things. Then people think its a scam if I ask for a money order. Then when I did get a money order it was from kroger which there are no krogers here. I don't have a bank account because I'm poor and don't need one, so I had to pay like $6 to cash it at a bank.

But then if I give stuff away for free I end up paying $20 in shipping costs. Seeds are a lot easier that's just like the cost of a stamp. Or send some sticks which are a few stamps. But I needed to get rid of some of my grape vines and didn't want to kill some of them because they were pretty good varieties. Though the totally weak ones are left to die. Survival of the fittest, but there are some that are just slightly disease prone but too good to kill that I'd rather give to somebody.

Now, let's go easy on him. Maybe he is just a kid.  I was on another forum and a brand new member who turned out to be only 12 years old was heartbroken by the poor reception.

To another point, I never find it worthwhile to grow just one seed. So much can happen - low germination, damping off, etc. Always best to buy a dozen. So save up and try again when you have a few more dollars.  Or like folks suggested, buy fruit!

Cheers,
Carolyn

I have given away seeds and eaten the postage. I did it last week. I would prefer to trade, but if someone is just starting out they may not have anything worth while. I also have issues with PayPal etc. They require too much info and what do they really do with it?
Asifh, I don't have any tropical seed right now, but may have some jujube seeds. That would have a better chance in your area anyway.

Others have sent me plant material as well and not accepted any kind of payment, (thank you again) so it's not that uncommon. D

I have also received free seeds for my breeding program.  I have given too, but less than I received.  I'll send some when I have them

For those that receive, its a good idea to share with others down the line.

It is also a good idea to establish yourself as an active member before asking for hookups. Once you have posted a bit and made some friends, the door for sharing opens up.

I think for some people the biggest concern is that they don't want to open themselves up to the risk of sending someone they don't know personal information (like a name and address).

a month or two ago a new member came on here asking for free avocado and
mango scions. Said he was a veteran and had parkison's. I sent him a few scions
and paid the postage. the guy never said thanks, F_ _ _ you, or any response?
I didn't do it for him. Too much negativity in our world right now and felt like trying
to do something nice.

I think you all scared him/her off.
I chuckle every time I read this post.  The request reminds me of that scene from “I’m gonna git you sucka” with Chris Rock asking to buy one rib. “I sure am hungry”
