Kumquat seeds
« on: March 21, 2023, 04:08:18 AM »
Looks like kumquat will be very hard to get here for a while (like years). As such I want to experiment with seed grown. Particularly looking for seeds from Meiwa. Thanks.

Because this area is quarantined, so we can't ship in, and the freezes, especially the freeze with power outages a few years ago, took out a lot of our local dealer's stock. We only had 2 I think that carried kumquat.

Do you have "SayWeee!" delivery in your city? It's an online asian grocery store that delivers in many cities. They usually stock kumquats, atleast in my area in NJ/NYC they have "Japanese kumquats" available which are meiwa, not nagami which are oval, I've purchased them before. So you can get fresh fruit that route and collect the seeds if it's something you want to try.

You might also see if there are H-marts or 99Ranch supermarkets nearby they sometimes stock meiwa kumquats (also labeled Japanese Kumquat) you will know they are meiwa by the round shape.

These were from the delivery grocery:

bigger ones were from my small potted tree which unfortunately died off this year

I actually ran across them and bought a bunch. I've never seen (as far as I recall) meiwa in stores, so I'm super excited. I collected a huge number of seeds while binging on them, so I'll hopefully have a lot in a couple of years. Now I'm seeing if I can hunt down a few other varieties to try. I know Limequat used to be available in the area, but haven't been able to track one down.
