Robert, these loquats are giants, my hand is fat, but the fruits shown in these photos all had fruits at least 100 grams each (except Vista White was only 99 grams). The largest/heaviest this year is the Khaled which had one big fruit that weighted in at 120 grams. My largest Peluche fruit was only 115-117 grams. So, we have a new largest loquat fruit.
The nice thing about these giant loquat fruits I have/tasted this year is that these fruits are naturally large on the tree without being thinned out to make them grow huge. When you look at the fruits of these trees, it is very impressive when there are so many fruits, and you realize how big each fruit is. Taste of these giants are not the sweetest when I compare it to all my other excellent loquats. But the BS-Estee can stand up to any of my other best tasting loquat so it's a top 3 loquat.
Brian, I won't be sharing/selling most of these cuttings yet this year, but next year when my grafted branches grow out more, I will be selling or having a few contests to give away some cuttings for you lucky winners. I will be talking to one person about his giant loquat tree and if he gives me permission to sell a few cuttings this year to share with our members, then I will post it here within a month. It will be a very limited sale and cost will be the going rate for premium rare variety (no discount price). I plan on giving most of the sales $$ (minus my shipping cost) to the person who owns the tree.
As for the taste of the fruits, it turns out the Peluche ranks the lowest for me when I did the taste test. For some reason, I'm finding that the Peluche only has a very short window (few days) where it actually tastes very good & juicy, after that it is below average taste. It does not hold well on the tree, it starts to wrinkle while hanging on the tree too long to ripen so if you don't know when to pick it, you would say the taste is bad and get rid of the grafted branch. But if you pick it at the right time, I would rate the taste an 8 out of 10 (best).
The top best tasting of the 5 giants shown is the Estee, it's a winner, can't go wrong with this variety. I have been following this seedling tree for 5-7 years and finally met the owner of the tree this year. His fruits are better tasting than the grafted branches I have and it turns out his fruits are all giants without thinning any fruits. I do not plan to list the best tasting or highest brix loquats this year since the colder weather did not allow all the fruits to have the best taste this year. But I could say this one may be #1 due to the taste, size of fruit, and fruit production. There is no negative on growing this tree. I have many of my trees now grafted with this variety so next year, it will be a good year for eating loquats.
From my review of all the large/giant varieties this year, I would expect the Estee, Guglielmo_! (Imperaile), Guglielmo_II to be the best large fruiting loquats of all. It will be difficult to find another variety that can beat the size and taste of these fruits. All of these three beats out the Peluche so save you money and graft a few of these varieties next year when I have some available. Sales will be limited to one cutting per member until it runs out.
My search for the best tasting and for the largest fruit loquats is over, I think I found them.
I will be reducing my collection and now only keep the best top varieties I that I like. Dig up and get rid of most of my large trees so I can have my yard space back.
