Wild theobromas and cashews
« on: September 07, 2023, 06:35:43 AM »
Probably a dead end but any ideas on finding sources of wild cacaos and Amazonian cashews within Brazil? We can’t buy from abroad because neighboring countries all have diseases that would devastate (and probably will) our cacao industry. Here in Brazil I’m yet to find any collectors or growers in the NE or north of the country. They’re all concentrated in subtropical SE and for this reason often don’t concentrate on ultratropicals. I’m particularly after cupuí and anacardium spruceanum and am yet to find sources. Otherwise I’ll just go and hunt in markets in the north, though there’s actually a quarantine on theobromas in three of 5 states of the Amazon right now even.

Do you know https://verdecenter.com.br/ ? They have some good connections.

I’ve spoken with them for sure as well as the other collectors and nurseries in São Paulo and Rio. It’s pretty niche and like everything in Brazil it’s all about personal contacts. No one so far has any contacts or varieties outside of cacauí, pataste and cacau azul.

You can always take a little trip or two and see what you find  :)
