Wild theobromas and cashews
« on: September 07, 2023, 06:35:43 AM »
Probably a dead end but any ideas on finding sources of wild cacaos and Amazonian cashews within Brazil? We canít buy from abroad because neighboring countries all have diseases that would devastate (and probably will) our cacao industry. Here in Brazil Iím yet to find any collectors or growers in the NE or north of the country. Theyíre all concentrated in subtropical SE and for this reason often donít concentrate on ultratropicals. Iím particularly after cupuŪ and anacardium spruceanum and am yet to find sources. Otherwise Iíll just go and hunt in markets in the north, though thereís actually a quarantine on theobromas in three of 5 states of the Amazon right now even.

Do you know https://verdecenter.com.br/ ? They have some good connections.

Iíve spoken with them for sure as well as the other collectors and nurseries in S„o Paulo and Rio. Itís pretty niche and like everything in Brazil itís all about personal contacts. No one so far has any contacts or varieties outside of cacauŪ, pataste and cacau azul.

You can always take a little trip or two and see what you find  :)
