Cherilata in Southern California

Flavor isnt as good as regular cherimoya IMO.  I put the tree in the chipper.

That’sa bummer!  I grafted three scions into my cherimoya last summer and they’ve all taken and starting to flower now. I’ll give them a chance for a couple years but that’s not a promising report.

At least I still have cherimoya!

I have a nice young Cherilata tree that I grafted on cherimoya rootstock last year. Very vigorous. Will probably get fruit this season. Actually it set and aborted a couple last year so it appears precocious. I have started giving annonas 2 or 3 years before deciding on fruit quality. I have had several varieties of cherimoya were very average on young trees but become excellent by year 3 in my yard. Fino de Jete, Knight, and Dr. White did not perform well early on.

I've recently grafted some Painter's cherilata.  But I hear there's also another cherilata. Anyone grow or tasted them and could note the differences?

So, I cut into one yesterday and it tasted really good. It tasted like my Kimber Red Reticulata with the firmness and less seeds than a cherimoya. Not sure if mine is a "Painters", I'm definitely going to keep growing it. The fruit stayed on the tree since last Fall.

It seems like 100% of cherilatas are Painter's because Painter is the name of the guy that first created the hybrid. I believe all of them derive from his original?

Do you have to manually pollinate the flowers?

My trees are manicured so they need hand pollination.

Unless it was a seedling of a painters.

Anyone, and many people have, can create a cherimoya reticulata cross. This is a popular one created by John painter. There are other cherilata available. They are not all the Painter Cherilata.
