Chop it and plant it.  Its fine.  Those plants are bullet proof.

I have some sugar dragons you can have if you want to come pickup in poway

5
Its a beautiful looking tree.  I would let it grow the way it is but if you want to chop it way back it will not hurt the tree.  Avocado trees come right back when you stump them.

Here's a question for you all--
It's rumored that Lychee doesn't do well in the hot dry summers inland, and that one should plant Longan instead.

What is the secret to Lychee growing for those in Inland SoCal with the multiple week 100 degree high's?  I like Lychee more than Longan so I'd like to try if it's not a tall order.

Tom

Its hot inland here and they do fine.  The trick is to use 30% shade until the plant is at least 3x3ft tall and wide.

And if you are able to put the shade over it during heat waves even better but they seem to take the heat ok once they are large.  And they like plenty of mulch and water.

Ive had a bunch of excellent zills mangos.  But I still do like a good champaign mango from the store.  Sometimes thry are not ripe enough but sometimes you get a crate that is full of big and dark orange fruit that taste great.

Brad if I understand correctly the Maluma was discovered  growing in a Hass Grove in south Africa , appears the farmer thought it had good potential that's how the ball got rolling, still very slow to get popular in Cali, other countries it's more popular in., But back to your ? Unlikely from a Gwen so if found in a Hass orchard my thought would be a chance seedling closely related to a Hass mother tree.

Got it I forgot this was a south africa one.  I was thinking it was the UC Luna one.

Not sure, sometimes mine sets a million fruit and other years zero fruitset.  The fruit are ok, hard seeds.  Notanything special so if it wont put out, not a big loss..

Is Maluma another Gwen seedling?

Yes, chop it down to one foot tall now and paint it white.  Then graft on the new shoots in February or right after your last frost.

Finally a really sweet one!

Tree ripened and dropped.

How is it compared to sweet tart?

Best time where I live is beginning of summer.  You can use a leaf to block the sun.  Take some plastic tape and tie the leaf around the scion.

I'd say it is only suited for the more advanced growers.

Hold my beer…

I haven’t heard of any success in growing this fruit in SoCA with a few possible exceptions.  Would still love to taste it based on K-Rimes experience in El Salvador

I have a tree and it gets hammered during winter.  But not dead.

My supposed Kaimana lychee kept one singular lychee. Picked this up from California Tropical Fruit Tree in vista. Once it’s ripe I’ll see if it’s a true Kaimana or not. Anybody else have opinions?

Tree just may need to get larger before fruiting.  Thats how my lychee trees are.  Needed to get pretty big to make many fruit.

I got a lot of sweethearts this year on one of my trees and they were really nice fruit.  Big and juicy and sweet
Not as productive as brewster but better quality.

Looks like longan but hard to tell for sure from the pics.

Been using Langbenite on my dragon fruits with great success. My manila mangos split like crazy to the point of never eating a fruit. How much water is needed for a trunk diameter of 9" or so? I have four 2gal/hour drippers spread around the tree along with a sprayer for the lemongrass next to the tree. Drip system runs twice a week at 30 minutes each and once at 20 minutes. so effectively 10ish gallons per week?

Should I scratch a handful of Langbenite into the soil at each dripper and let it go a few time a year?

10gal a week seems like not much.  Best way to tell is take a shovel and dig down a foot or so and see how wet it is after a few days after watering.

I tried some canistels and it is just not my thing.  I might try making milkshakes or something out of it.  Frank had that at a party one time and it was good.

Thry turn bright orange when ripe

Always enjoy seeings Brads property.  Get me excited about what I can expect in several more years.

Im in the stage of top working all the trees with the top selections now.  10 years of trials and errors and now its time to spend the next 5 years top working most of the trees.

First of all congrats but AJ moved to Denmark?  Why?  That's the worst place to grow an Avocado.

His fiance is from Denmark.
