Someone here gave/traded me some "super hass" avocados scion wood a few years ago.  Thank you whoever it was.  I have forgotten who from FL sent these.  And now we have fruit.  So I did the pepsi challenge with it against original hass and sharwil. 

Left to right is Sharwil, Hass, Super Hass.



There are no lighting tricks, the sharwil has the most colorful flesh and super hass is the most pale.  Taste wise, the 2 hass fruit are almost identical.  Slight edge goes to regular hass.  But Sharwil still killed them both with better looking flesh and better tasting and more oil.  Also the skin of the super hass is pretty thin and ends up in the flesh when cutting with a serrated knife.  I can see why the super hass is popular in places that cant grow regular hass.  They taste the same.  Overall its good but not great.  Just my opinion.

I grow this tree to use seeds for my own orchard.  I have started a bunch of seeds for myself and have more leftover fruit that I will not be using.  I don't want to throw them away so I am offering them for sale.  And yes the price is a bit high but it is not worth my time to try and sell these for less.  Hopefully that makes sense.

Hello, does anyone know where to get this stuff at a good cost?  Bulk discount deal for a few hundred pounds?

I tried Harrels's they don't carry it.

Any of you guys that shop at Grangettos know if they have it ?

Some one gave me a gallon of general hydroponics PH down liquid food grade phosphoric acid. 

I don't have a big use for it but was considering running it through a fertilizer injector and watering my grove with it just to use it up.  I know my water is high in PH and the ground is probably also above 7.  If I run it with thousands of gallons of water it should be fine right?

Theres been a lot of people asking me for scion wood to do bark grafting of avocado trees lately.  Its not just 1 or or 2, its 5 or more people all wanting to do this in February.  Im telling everyone the bark will not slip right now.  You can do cleft grafts but I don't think the bark grafts will work out.  Thats why I have been doing this grafting work in December.  The trees still have sap flow and can be bark grafted.  Thats working quite well the last few years. 

I'm just putting this here so people can understand the best timing for doing avocado grafting and top working. 

If you want to stump a large tree, the best time to do that is mid summer.  It takes 2-3 months and you will have plenty of new growth to graft onto in December-April.  That would be small cleft grafts. 

If you want to top work a tree with 1-2inch diameter branches or main trunk, you can cut it back in early december (in southern CA) the sap will still be flowing and bark will peel off and be able to do bark grafts.  Or you can wait until it warms up again and do it in maybe April.  By that time, the grafts will be seeing a lot more heat and will be hard to get good takes if you live in a hot interior area.  If its a mild coastal area, spring and even summer grafting is not a problem.  Just shade the grafts until well healed and thry are fine.

If you want to do cleft grafts, of course the timing is not critical.  It is just getting the stumping and bark graft timing down that is more important.
