Could it not be rooted instead of grafted? Is there a specific time of year for rooting cuttings too?
I was talking to the peeps at Cody's Cove about that while taste testing their mulberry and they said it doesn't root well, so you'll have a much higher chance of success grafting

Before I discovered this forum, I ordered a “Blue Java” banana from Wellspring.  It turned out to be some small fruited banana like a manzano. Never again will I order from a nursery that can’t get their naners straight. Fool me once…
I got my real blue Java from Brad. It fruited as advertised.  Despite his expressed dislike for the variety, I consider it a solid banana with nice texture and excellent sweetness. I suspect Brad does not want to get inundated with ‘the real blue Java’ requests like the guava that tastes like bubblegum  ;)
Tell me more about this guava that tastes like bubblegum

They have but figured I could prep them.

How would you prep them? I don’t think grafting mulberry is done after they push, you want to graft them while dormant/ swelling buds.

For anyone interested, I have a couple grafted trees available. PM me if interested.
I had luck grafting during the fall 2 years ago. Unfortunately with the new growth it was killed spring winter, but had success. Maybe it depends on the plant. I also wonder if you can trick it like mango (saw this in a video and want to try it) and trim off the leaves from the intended scion, then wait for the leftover stems to fall off and new buds to start forming to show nutrients and hormones are in that scion, then cut it off.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Passion Flower "Red Rover"
« on: March 27, 2024, 10:05:56 PM »
Sounds like another agristarts mass produced fake like the blue java bananas.  The round red rovers are the clone that every nursery is selling from tissue cultures from agristarts.  Even CRFG has description wrong lol.

Good news this fruit is an improvement over fredrick at least.  At least for growing inland they dont get sun burns as easily.
What's the story behind blue Java bananas?

Nam Wah are fantastic. I got to try them off a tree on my trip to Florida and was blown away. Way better than store bought and worth growing
Blue javas are also great. I think I tried Hua Kia years ago and really liked them too the point where I've been trying to find that banana for a decade. Hopefully by next year I'll try one to confirm. I also want to taste the Kakopo.

That's pretty cool. I wonder how hard it would be to identify the fungus that's causing it in your yard. So many different plants showing it I'm suspicious of a fungus not genetic. Maybe before you sell the next set of seeds you can try cooking the soil in the oven to kill everything

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Zill's Black Suriname Cherry
« on: March 24, 2024, 03:06:47 AM »
Actually, the variety name is 'Zill Dark'.

Someone at the nursery doing the tag printing switched to "Black Surinam Cherry", even though this variety is very obviously not one of those which actually have black color.  It is really very dark purple or blackish-red.

It was selected by Dorothy Zill, who suggested that I save it, when she saw that I was digging up other Surinam-cherries to save when the old nursery was sold to developers.  I named it 'Zill Dark.'

Is there both a Zill's Black and Zill's Dark?

It was out of stock as of a few days ago, however if you go and do a little shopping over there anyways they have some that you can taste. Tastes amazing ripe and unripe. They may also have some bananas for you to taste.

Still available?

Go down to Cody's Cove. There are a number of great Nurseries in Tampa are too. I'm in a trip here and went to a bunch and got a bunch.

Pity. I just picked up simpson show stopper. I what if I can graft onto that.

I don't know of a source for scion material for Hood and don't have a tree myself. I think Just Fruits and Exotics carries the trees along with several other places. The research I have done on compatibility with apple says that you would likely need 2 interstems. First you would have to graft a cultivated pear, then Winter Bannana apple, and finally a low chill apple. If I remember, the thread that I read on the Growing Fruit forum seemed to undicate that the Winter Bananna apple was not directly compatible with Callery pear. You might check that forum for scions of Hood, though. I am not on there and just read occasionally, so I don't know what is available. But it might be worth a shot.

Thanks for the response chalk full of info I really appreciate it.

See if you can get a tour of Cody's Cove for Skinner mulberry (tasty ripe and not) and bananas.

How do you think these would do in 9a North Fl? Still hot and humid in the summer but do get frost in the winter.
Loquats should do fine. They don't even lose leaves during freezes in Houston. The only problem that can happen is if the temperature warms up and then you get a sudden freeze it's possible for it to bloom and have the flowers freeze. The stress of Summer also can cause them to bloom if it's crazy hot like it was last year in Houston

i arbitrary give it that name of Betty, then after talking with the home owner, we decided it would be nice to name it after his wife Syliva, so that is what happened. In the beginning he didn't want to give it a name and just asked me to name it but changed his mind later.

That's lovely. Thanks for the reply.

Can they root from cutting?

Living Roots Eco has a huge mature one for $110

Here's a few more photos for your records, you might want to copy the image so you have a copy of it in the future. You can use any of my photos I post of the Sylvia guava as long as you use the proper name that is assigned to it. The name is for the tree owner's wife.

How did it start as Betty out of curiosity?

Pineapple will set fruit on its own. I don't know if callery will bloom at the right time to act as a pollenator.

Glad to hear it'll set fruit on its own. Do you know any sources for Hood pear anyways? Also can Apple be grafted on callery?

« on: March 20, 2024, 09:58:28 PM »
I brought 2 Indian Jujubes from a private collector this year and they are fruiting right now.

From what I were told, Indian Jujube fruit is remain green, sweet, crunchy and crispy.  The size is like an egg or bigger if fertilizer right. Required heavy pruning after harvest the fruits which around April because flowers come from new branches.  Flowers season around Oct.

It is very hard to Air-Layer, best graft on a rootstock.

Here is a pic of my fruits as today.  They are in a 7 gal now.

How are your jujube doing?

24
Anyone know what callery pear has for chill hours? Will it flower in Tampa for cross pollination?

25
Pineapple acquired. Thank you Citrus Park Nursery. Looking for one more pair of Scion if possible for cross pollination
