Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help ID this fruit
« on: July 26, 2023, 06:04:28 PM »
Is this fruit from a Eugenia luschnathiana or Pitomba?

I went to a fruit tour and picked up these fruits from a mature tree, it tastes ok, not sweet, a little on the source side. I picked up these fallen fruits, forgot to take photos of the tree, maybe later.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question on Miracle Fruit Tree
« on: July 24, 2023, 09:20:25 PM »
I just purchased a Miracle Fruit tree and it came with one smaller branch broken.

My question is, anyone know if you can root the cutting or graft it to another variety?

28
I found a good mulberry seedling tree (male) that seems to root well for me so I stared rooting many cuttings now. I finally got the hang of rooting cuttings without much effort so I can make many rooted cuttings for rootstock now.

It will be 1 year before I can graft onto these rooted cuttings.

So, just curious if there is enough interest for me to graft some good varieties on these future seedling plants for next year.
=======================================================
Sales to registered forum members for at least 6 months.
Not taking any advance orders, will not sell them until after the grafted plants are ready to ship.
=======================================================

Here's the list of mulberry varieties I'm thinking of grafting onto the seedlings when they are old enough to graft.

1. Red Himalayan (from Exotica) - huge leaves, vigorous, fruits well after 3 years. Fruit tastes good, brix =22.
2. White Pakistan- my variety seems to grow slow/dwarf style. So this might be a good one for those who want to grow in ground and keep it small (under 8 ft). Fruit tastes is excellent, sweet, brix =28.
3. Australian Green- white long fruit, similar in size and taste to white pakistan. Fruit seems to stay on longer than the white pakistan. Vigorous grower. High fruit production. brix =28.
4. DMOR9- long red fruit. Seems to be one of the best tasting from peoples review. I haven't tasted many fruits on new grafts. Vigorous grower, I should have many large branches by next spring to use scionwood. (sale on ebay $150)
5. Siam Jimbo- fruit is supposed to be 1-1/2", fat red/black fruits. My fruits were that not fat, similar is size to Thai Dwarf. Maybe next year it will have larger fruits that tastes better.
6. Silk Hope- taste is good.
7. Thom's Super Pakistan- long red fruit, similar to DMOR9. Still not many available except on ebay ($150)
8. Gerardi Dwarf- small, 1" fruits, tastes good. Suppose to be a dwarf mulberry due to close leaf nodes.
9. Sange e Latte (Italy)- translated fruit color is blood & milk (red/with white background). Taste is excellent. Different from most mulberries here in the US. (not really available except here).
10 Persian mulberry (morus nigra)- small fruit, supposed to be best combo of sweet/tart. Vigorous grower, as much as my Red Himalayan.

-> Not showing any of the varieties that are easy to root from cuttings such as the Black Pakistan & Shangre-La

The cost of the grafted tree (1yr old) could range from $30-$50 each, plus shipping cost.
The cost of the grafted tree is for the pots I need to purchase, seedling tree, and the scionwood which is a fair price. If you think it should be lower in cost, let me know as well below.

Let me know if you would be interested in this, please tell me which ID number above is of interest.
I have 24 varieties and I think these above are the best tasting.

If there are enough people interested, then I will graft the top 3 most requested below (popular/desirable) as my seedling trees become available for grafting.

If I decide to graft these, I will post the final top 3 varieties by the end of the month.

Thanks..

Ok, since I did not deliver on my previous white sapote advance list, here's what I'm thinking of doing for next year.

I have planted many white sapote seeds last year and now they are starting to get closer to grafting size (almost 1 yr old seedlings).

So, just curious if there is enough interest for me to graft some white sapote varieties on these future seedling plants for next year.

2. Cuccio - large fruits, very good tasting
3. Clytia (from Jack), have fruits on tree now, good production
4. Nettie, have one fruit almost ready to taste
5. Mary Lane (Mark Lee), highly recommended by Mark.

Yellow Sapote (Casimiroa tetrameria)
6. Younghan's Gold - medium/large fruits, vey good tasting
7. Yellow Sapote seedling (Arboretum)- Joyce, my seedling tree, very good tasting. Many fruits now ripening on my tree.
8. C. tetrameria #7 (from Jack), have some large fruits on tree now.

The cost of the grafted tree (1yr old) could range from $30-$40 each, plus shipping cost.
The cost of the grafted tree is for the pots I need to purchase, seedling tree, and the scionwood.

If you think it should be lower in cost, let me know as well below.

Let me know if you would be interested in this, please tell me which ID number above is of interest.
I only have 28 varieties and these above are the ones I like and have fruited now except for Mary Lane.

If there are enough people interested, then I will graft the top 5 most requested below (popular/desirable) as my seedling trees become available for grafting.

If I decide to graft these, I will post the final top 5 varieties by the end of the month.

I will be planting a lot of my loquat seeds this year and will not let most of them grow until it fruits.

So, just curious if there is enough interest for me to graft some good loquat varieties on these future seedling plants for next year.

Here's the list of loquat varieties I'm thinking of grafting onto the seedlings when they are old enough to graft.
  Added Estee on 7/22.

1. Big Jim (my variety, could be a seedling tree from the nursery, not sure- tastes excellent).
2. Vista White, large white flesh fruits, very good tasting
3. KT1-Kosmic, highest fruit production, very good tasting, flesh is white/yellow.
4. KT3-Sheri Lynn, white/yellow flesh, very good, medium to large fruits, one of my favorites
5. KT9-Lindsey, orange flesh, one of the best tasting of the orange flesh, larger fruits than Big Jim.
6. KT2-OCBC_Keiko, unreleased white flesh seedling. Very good to Excellent tasting, round fruit, much better than a Mogi or Argelino.
7. KT6-Lisa1, white flesh, highest brix (22-30).
8. KT23-Lenox, white/yellow flesh, excellent tasting fruit.
9. KT26-Michael1, white flesh, highest brix (21-29).

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Closed- Peluche seeds
« on: July 02, 2023, 05:09:21 PM »
I have been planting my Peluche seeds now, and remembered some forum members wanted to buy a few seeds to grow out.

Here's what my seeds look like that I just planted today.

Here's the seeds that I cleaned over the weekend. These are what will be sent out starting Wednesday.

Here's the cost for the seeds:
1. Peluche seeds, $2 each.  [very limited quantity for sale]
2. No minimum order, maximum of 10 per forum member.
3. Must be a forum member for 6 months to purchase.
4. Sales to lower 48 states.

I will be taking advance order to buy item #4 below, a new seedling variety called KT23-Lenox.

The fruit has white/yellow flesh, very juicy, very good to excellent taste. Nate says it's a good one.

Here's his review of this fruit:
===========
I think you have something special with the white flesh seedling fruit you brought by today. Everyone has said it’s the best loquat they’ve had. Absolute perfect balance of sweet/tart, with much more sweetness than tart, and it seems like every fruit taste similar, so you’ve got nice consistency with this one. Much better/sweeter than Vista White, or any of the other whites I’ve tried. Wonderful fruit!
===========

New update to the list below that I have been submitted for 2023.

2. KT21-Betty. Good tasting fruits, has been fruiting for 3 yrs
3. KT22-xxx.  First time fruiting this year.

If you want just a few loquat varieties then I suggest you graft the Big Jim (orange), Jim's Big White (white flesh), KT1-Kosmic (highest fruit production) and KT23-Lenox (excellent tasting).

So if you have not purchased these two seedling trees, I highly recommend you buy the KT1 and KT23 to add to your tree.

Here's the photos of the loquat tree and fruits:

---> These fruits below were banged around by the wind and was hitting the other branches and block wall so they have some scratch marks. If they don't get knocked around, the fruits are nice and pretty like the ones above on the tree. They still tasted good.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / White Sapote Fruit Shapes
« on: June 23, 2023, 05:10:18 PM »
If anyone has photos of their white sapote fruits, I would like to see them posted here.
Mainly like to see what physical shape your fruits are for the specific variety. This may help others as well in identifying some of the varieties.  Fruits do not need to be ripe to post your photos, just large enough that we can see what shape it will be (egg, spherical, pear shape, etc).

I will take some photos some of my small green fruits, I have a seedling tree with fruits that are shaped like a football (hanging).

========================================
Please identify the variety if you know the name and post a photo
========================================

Photos of your white sapote can be from previous years, this is just to help identify some fruits from their shape.

Thanks,
Kaz

SALE IS OVER

This sale is for the Estee loquat cutting. It has white flesh; it is on my top 5 best tasting list. It is also one of the giant loquat fruits. Taste is excellent, juicy sweet, can't go wrong if you have this one. It probably is the best large size white loquat that I have tasted so far.

Since I will have only 10 cuttings to sell/spread around. I will do a raffle for you to guess a number, and the first 10 people to guess closest to the number when I end this raffle will have the opportunity to buy 1 cutting next week.

This tree is an established tree, large, has good form, about 12 ft tall, growing in ground for over 15 yrs.

I have this variety grafted on multiple in ground trees and have been tracking the flavor every year for 7 years since I grafted this one back in 2016. Taste is very consistent, when ripe it is one of the best white flesh, not many other will taste better. I would not be selling any scionwood of this variety, but I met the owner of the mother tree this year and he let me take cuttings from his tree. My grafts are too small to take cuttings.

Seedling 20, Estee, white flesh, large fruits (100 grams), and taste is top 5. There are not many other loquat varieties that tastes better than this one. The others which may have more sweetness (higher brix) is my seedling varieties.

I have permission to sell some scion wood of Estee so that we can spread this variety to the hobby. Profit will go to the owner of this tree, less cost for me to ship it. Limited quantity of 10 scionwood for sale at this time. Maybe next year there will be more available.

Here's the cost for this cutting:
1. Estee, $25 each.
2. Order quantity = 1 per forum member.
3. Must be a forum member for 6 months to purchase.
4. Sales to lower 48 states.
5. Shipping Cost, $10.20, USPS priority mail, small box.
6. Total Cost => $35.20
7. I take PayPal only, Friends & Family.
8. I have the right to refuse to sell to anyone.

When I find some photos of the fruit, I will post it later. For now, you can see the photo on the other posts of the giant loquat comparison below.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / For Sale: Loquat Cutting - Melissa
« on: June 18, 2023, 10:39:17 PM »
This loquat tree is an established tree, large, has good form, about 17 ft tall, growing in ground for over 15 yrs.

Seedling 19, "Melissa" has small fruits, but the taste is top 10. When I compared the taste, it is better than Sunset, Michael (MPJ4), Yehuda, McBeth, Big Jim (orange flesh) or Argelino. The flesh is white, firm, and very good to excellent taste. My Big Jim tree may be a seedling tree, and it has better taste than what is sold in the nursery as Big Jim. I have 3 different Big Jim sources grafted on my tree for taste comparison and the one I compared Melissa is to the true Big Jim, not my seedling tree. The flesh color is white/yellow when ripe

I have permission to sell some scion wood of Melissa so that we can spread this variety to the hobby. Profit will go to the owner of this tree, less cost for me to ship it.

Here's the cost for this cutting:
1. Melissa, $15 each.
2. No minimum order, maximum of 2 per forum member.
3. Must be a forum member for 3 months to purchase.
4. Sales to lower 48 states.
5. Shipping Cost, $10.20, USPS priority mail, small box.
6. I take PayPal only, Friends & Family.
7. I have the right to refuse to sell to anyone.

Send a PM if you would like to purchase this cutting. I have limited cuttings so when it runs out that is it.

When I find some photos of the fruit, I will post it later.

Since there are some interests in the dwarfing nature of FD and using these for rootstock, I will document my recently planted FD seedlings. I separated the seedlings after 4-6 wks to monoembryonic and polyembryonic seedlings by visual inspection.

You can look at the photos and make comments, but please don't side track my post where I'm just documenting the growth of these seedlings.

 ========== Here's the early photos from Jan 2023 ========================
I planted maybe 300-500 seeds from my fruits of my 40 yrs old Flying Dragon tree:

I just planted out my seeds from the Flying Dragon tree I have, here's a few photos of the seedlings. They look very similar to me. I have many other varieties grafted on the tree and another tree 10 feet from the FD.

=======================================================

I have new photos of the seedlings I will post later when I have time. They all look healthy, the polyembryonic seedling do have irregular size seedlings but I did not see anything special, just very small seedlings or larger ones.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Giant Loquat Fruits Comparison
« on: June 13, 2023, 06:07:17 PM »
Consideration for a Giant Loquat fruit: weight should be above 80 grams.

Ok, all my loquats have finished ripening and I have been picking them all. Since I found some huge loquat fruits in my search for the best/excellent tasting seedling trees, I thought to do a comparison on the size of the largest varieties I have fruited or will have next year when the grafts grow out. All these fruits are what I have, and tasted it after i took these photos.

I just took some photos today and will post the photos later tonight. Here's my list of giant loquat fruits:

1. Vista White
2. Peluche
3. Estee
4. Khaled #1
5. Guglielmo_II

These loquat fruits are giants, all except the Vista White are comparable in size. Vista White was the smallest of the giants.

=============================================================
If you have any photos of your giant loquat, please post it here and say what variety is it, or if it's an unknown tree, seedling tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Vista White Loquat
« on: May 25, 2023, 03:22:03 AM »
This loquat has not gotten as much attention as other varieties. I think it is very unique because the fruits of the Vista White is large, round with some bumps, has the thinnest skin of any loquat I have and pure white flesh.

I will post some photos of my large tree which is over 30yrs old, those of you who have purchased the Vista White cuttings from me last year and this year when I cut most of it down, you are the lucky ones to have this variety in your collection.

Many of the fruits are just starting to ripen so I will post some photos now of the fruits on the tree, later in a week I will show the inside flesh, and take a brix reading. This year all of my loquat varieties have drop in brix reading, probably because it has been cool in April/May so the fruits just are not as sweet as last year. One of my seedling variety (KT6) last year had a brix=30, this year the fruit only had brix=20 so far. Most of the fruits are ripe now so I don't think it will get any sweeter.

If anyone else is growing the Vista White (Nate), then please post some photos of your tree & fruits so everyone can see the variation in fruits.

I have many white flesh varieties in my collection (10+) and the Vista White has the whitest color flesh.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Contorted Mulberry Tree
« on: May 18, 2023, 07:28:56 AM »
Since I have not seen many people post about their contorted mulberry tree, I thought I would take some photos of my grafted branch and show you what it looks like. This tree is pretty unusual in that the branch is all contorted, I read some people use the branches in flower arrangements.

The fruits of the contorted mublerry is very sweet, what a surprise it was. The last few years it only had a few fruits on each branch that were very small (1/4"-1/2" long) so it was difficult to taste it for flavor or compare it to other varieties like Shangri La.

This year my grafts have full size fruits, and lots of them. The size of the fruits are 1/2-3/4" long, taste is very good, sweeter tasting than the Shangri La, Jan's Best World's Best, Tahi Dwarf, Tice, Oscar, Silk Hope.

If you grow this variety, please post some photos or make your comments on the taste of the fruits.

I heard that the name given to this contorted variety by the lady who found the mutation on her tree is:

Callie’s Delight Contorted Mulberry

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Happy Mother's Day !

For anyone who was on my Advance List of buying the small grafted plants of the Sangue e Latte, here's my status update.

This is not open to the general public, only the members that are on this list. I am not adding new names (taking orders).

I have tried grafting this scionwood to some rooted mulberry cuttings two times, did not have much success at all. I had two nice size grafted branches which gave fruits each of the last 2 years. But one branch died and I only have one other grafted branch. Since this variety does not grow many side branches to cut for grafting it has been difficult for me to take many cuttings to try and graft on the small, rooted cuttings. Also, I ran out of most of my rooted cuttings I used to graft other varieties.

So, this is the last time I will attempt to graft you a small plant for the sale I promised previously. I have enough cuttings now this year for only the first 10 people on my attached list below. If the grafts fail again, I will not fulfil your advanced order.

If anyone wants to buy the cuttings now instead and attempt to graft it yourself you can, I will only sell you one cutting (no extra), length will be 6", about 1/4" diameter hardened scionwood.

Cost is $15, plus shipping cost of $10.20 = Total Cost => $25.20
Only those people on my list (ID# 1- #10) will have the option by Monday to contact me (PM) and let let me know if you want to purchase it, instead of waiting for me to graft, then sell it to you later after the graft heals.

If you are not on this list, please do not send me any messages asking to buy cuttings or grafted plants, won't happen. Not open for new orders on this waiting list.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mulberry Fruit Comparison
« on: April 27, 2023, 06:41:46 AM »
Some of my mulberry fruits are starting to ripen so I wanted to share some photos of the ripe fruits I picked. I will put up the photos soon today.

The following mulberries are ripe here in SoCal:
1. Thai Dwarf/World's Best
2. White Pakistan
3. Australian Green
4. Saharanpur Local
5. Shahtoot/King White
6. Red Himalayan

As far as I can tell, the four white long fruited mulberries above are the same variety. The fruits are the same size, taste, and color. But I do notice there are differences in growth of the branches/leaves.

I only have the Red Himalayan fruits ripening and do not any of the other red long fruiting mulberry (i.e. Skinner, Taiwan Long).

If anyone has ripe mulberries, please share your photos and describe how you like the taste/flavor.

Once my mulberry trees are done with the fruits, I plan to cut them all back a lot so if there is interest, I will generate an Advance purchase list for the mulberry cuttings so it will make it easier for me to just contact you when I cut the branches and then you can pay and I will ship. There are some rare/scarce varieties that I will not be taking cuttings yet since my grafts are too small.

Here's my list of mulberries grafted on my trees. But only the ones with X will be large enough to take cuttings and share.

Since my Thai Dwarf/World's Best and Red Himalayan, White Pakistan, Australian Green, Saharanpur Local have all fruited and most are half way done ripening I will start the advance order list for cuttings:

1. To be on this Advance Order -Waiting List, here's what you must meet.
2. TFF forum member for 1 year minimun (no exception)
3. Limit of 3 cuttings max of any variety I mention. No minimum
4. Shipping cost of $10.20 (USPS small flat rate), no pickup.
5. I am limiting the number of members on the list to 10 max. You can be on more than one variety list.
6. I will check your registration date to determine yrs of membership.
7. Any member with 10yrs or more gets the cuttings for free, but pays shipping cost of $10.20

I will not be reading this post here for request to be on this list, you must send me a message and when I acknowledge you are on it, then you are good to go. When the fruits are done, I will start going in priority order of this list.

I'm going to collect any scionwood/budwood of new seedling trees/finds that you may feel tastes very good to excellent, better than any other named varieties you tasted. I will also include any seedling trees that has been growing for more than a few years but not many people know it exist such as the Jaden loquat tree. I also found out recently that the 1Z-2Z has been around and it could be from Jim N.  I will look into this one further and give credit to the proper person.

Also, if you loquat tree shows a different type of fruit shape than normal, it may be of interest to collect. I would like to include any loquats that grow giant fruits, fruits with the eye open more than others, unusual shaped fruits, fruits that bloom more than one time in a year, have multiple crops per year, very cold hardy.

I was hoping to have Adam do this for me (all my seedlings) but that didn't work out. So, for anyone who has found a new seedling tree or has grown a new seedling tree with excellent or unusual fruits, let me know.

What I will do is the following:
1) Collect 2-4 scionwood from your seedling tree.
2) Graft it on my multi-grafted tree (has 84 varieties now).
3  Next year or when it has the first fruits after i graft it, I will document the photo of your fruits.
Take Brix measurements to log into MY comparison table.
4) Since its a seedling, you can also name the new variety and I will introduce your variety here
by ID, photos, brix, and taste comparison to Big Jim.
5) This is open to USA residents only.

This is your opportunity to have your seedling tree (variety) recognized by the loquat collectors in our forum. Once the grafted branches grow, I will try to share some cuttings with the other forum members here. If the fruits end up not tasting good then I will not distribute any scionwood, but instead just cut off the grafted branches after 2 years (fruit twice).

Why would you want to send me free scionwood of your seedling tree?
1. This is a way for you to get your new variety named and spread to other loquat collectors.
2. It will allow you to compare the brix of your seedling variety with all the others I'm growing.
3. Once your seedling variety has fruited and turns out to be a winner, then you can sell your
cuttings for a lot of money like the Peluche loquat (maybe?).
4. When you submit your scionwood/cuttings, let me know if you want to be the exclusive seller
of your seedling. If you do, then I will not share/sell any cuttings from your seedling variety.

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SPEND MONEY SHIPPING THE SCIONWOOD, THEN i WILL COVER YOUR
   SHIPPING COST

Citrus General Discussion / Seedlings from Variegated Citrus Fruits
« on: April 14, 2023, 02:46:28 PM »
Anyone growing seeds from citrus fruits that are variegated?

I remember Laaz mentioning that most of the variegated fruits seeds will end up as albino and die and only a very few varieties will not be albino. So I decided to try and germinate as many of the variegated citrus fruits I can find this year.

I have a neat variegated Satsuma fruits that I germinated seeds and all of them (100%) germinated as albino seedlings. Very interesting that the small seedlings are still alive after a few months. There were some that started to die but half of them is still alive.

If you have any variegated citrus fruits you are growing, please take a few photos of the seedlings and post it here. I have 3-5 different seedlings starting to grow so I will post them soon..
