New Mango Tree in Ground. Should I tip it?
« on: August 08, 2021, 12:06:58 PM »
I bought a 7 gal Honey Kiss in the ground today.  What's the conventional wisdom regarding tipping pruning?  I'm thinking the main branch loses a few inches.  After that, the side shoot?

I'd put it just below the graft line

Beautiful tree. Don’t tip any shoots now.
Add stakes to train the top 3 shoots to spread out and up.
These will be main scaffolds.
Tip the top 3 when they get longer and farther away from trunk, maybe after another flush.

Pull the lower side shoots away from trunk.
They get more light so grow faster, fattening the trunk.
In a year or 2 remove the side shoots.
It’s up to you how fat the trunk you like.
If you remove them now you’ll have an ugly tree with a chicken leg trunk.
