Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Leaf Marginal Necrosis
« on: July 17, 2023, 07:41:19 PM »
Hi All,

My V.P. Mango is experiencing Leaf Marginal Necrosis, that starts at the bottom of the lower canopy. The Valencia Pride mango’s new growth also looks like it’s dead from drought; however, we have received rains in my area over the past few weeks. My question is this: is it a biotic or non-biotic
problem? My guess, biotic; but if not, is it a nutrient deficiency? (See photos). Or Anthracnose? Sunburn? Or BBS? Please help, TIA from a beginner.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Creme Brulee Mango

What became of your Crème Brûlée mango? I ask, because I planted one in my yard today and I have many questions. The first question being, what’s your experience with the fruit? Does it ripe evenly or is it prone to soft nose? What’s this tree’s growth rate? Susceptibility to Anthracnose and Black Spot? I can’t find much information on the cultivar. I’m reaching out to a 4 year old post because I’m desperate for information. Supposedly, this is a superb mango with Indian spiciness.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Banana (Gros Michel) leaves looking bad
« on: August 02, 2019, 10:05:02 AM »

I bought a couple of Bananas (Gros Michel) from FL Hill Nursery this year, and today, I noticed what appears to be a black fungus on the lower leaves. If anyone has experienced a similar problem, could you help me ID the problem and suggest a remedy?

Mod edit: corrected variety name

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mangoes seeds that breed true.

I recently saw a YouTube video with George Zill and he said that Nam Doc Mai mango seeds will
produce replicas of the mother plant. I’m curious why some mango seeds are “monozygotic” and some are not? Can anyone explain in layman’s terms?

Not know much about predatory wasp, I let them be, in the hope that they are beneficial. Thanks for the reply.

I found these "wasp" congregating on my young Avocado Tree. Does anyone know their ID?

After doing some more research, I identified it as the avocado lace bug. Online literature says do not treat unless it's a major outbreak. I'm kind of curious as to why, perhaps, because I would upsetting the chain-of-life and killing predator mites?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado Leaf Spot Nacrosis (spider mites?)
« on: March 24, 2019, 01:36:14 AM »

I have something attacking my avocado leaves. What I observer on the leaf with my naked eye, was a brown spot from the midrib extending to the margin, with underside of the leaf having dark brown specks in the middle of the necrosis, to the naked eye these brown specks looked like insect feces, but tonight under my microscope, I observed multiple cone-like insect cells (approx. 8 cells).  Also present was a few strands of web silk linking some cells.

After some Google searching of Spider Mites, I could not positively ID my avocado's problem. I suspect spider mites but I remain unsure. Does anyone have any experience with this problem? Do spider mites make cone-like cells? If so, what's the best treatment? Any direction would be appreciated.

Thanks In Advance

Hi Everyone,

My name is Bryan. I'm a new member and wanted to say hi. I have a 20 avocado trees and 3 mangos newly planted in my yard. Avocado varieties include: Duke, Ulala, Oro Negro, Golden, Monroe, Lila, Mexicola, Mexicola Grande, Joey, Bacon, Carmen Haas and even a Indonesian Red. One of my Mangos is a Nam Duc Mai. I love tropical fruit, and find much of what's offered in the local grocery store, especially mangos, rather tasteless. I also garden and I like motorcycles and spearfishing. I live on 2.25 acres just outside downtown Tampa, that is why I'm able to have so many fruit trees. Nice to meet everyone and I'm looking forward to learning from your experience. Thanks.
