FEIJOA (pineapple guava) questions

does anybody have any luck with getting feijoa to fruit in central florida?  if so what variety?  is there a variety with the lowest amount of chilling hours to set fruit?

I’m in California 10a
I looked up chill hours and it said 50-100, at 32 to 45F
The low here this winter was 32 so it’s not hard to get those chill hours if you have any winter at all.
I think a bigger problem is pollination. Most types are not self fertile. Coolidge is the classic self fertile variety. I have a lot of them in my neighborhood that are decorative - presumably grown from seed and they rarely set fruit. If you are getting good blooms then I would try getting another plant, preferably a self fertile named variety.

I have seen them fruiting in central Florida, but their owners didn't know the variety name. Just bought them and got lucky. I had a large tree blooming every year and not a singe fruit set.

most of them need different varieties near by, I know from an earlier thread that Nazemetz feijoa variety is crazy productive with only one tree

in general though you need a lot of diversity for a good Feijoa crop

also chill hours are minimal but preferably more the better, the colder it is outside the sweeter itll taste
edit: also might be worth planting it in shade!

Something I've noticed is that fruits that do well in ca zone 9b (babaco, etc). are susceptible to fruit flies out there. Are Feijoa sensitive to fruit flies in fl?

I'd say they're a great candidate for containers, they take pruning very well and grow their canopy thick/compact like a boxwood or other hedge and you can trim them into shapes. Very aggressive plant that doesn't require much! Shallow roots, drought resistant too

Thanks.  I started a couple seedlings from some fruit I had, but I don't know much about them.  I guess I could try grafting onto them if scion becomes available

I planted a tree in central fl 9b (highlands county) around 15 years ago (unnamed) probably seedling. The tree grew into a gorgeous tree and bloomed every single year I had it...NEVER set a single fruit!!! And I even hand pollinated it with a small paint brush, not a single fruit set ...it died about 2 years ago cause unknown??





A year after planting that tree it I bought an unnamed bush variety at a local nursery and in 2 years that one bloomed and fruited, sadly that also died on its 7th or 8th year.






2 years ago I bought and planted 2 dwarf varieties called "Bambina" Pineapple Guava from Lowe's and I also planted 2 more bushes unnamed near them for cross pollination from a nursery in Jacksonville since NO nurseries near me sold them other than the one variety I found at Lowe's.

None of them bloomed this year, I'm guessing it is still quite young...
