ANGIE vs FRUIT PUNCH mango pros and cons
« on: June 03, 2024, 12:15:03 PM »
Got room for one more mango tree in my yard.  Narrowed it down to fruit punch or Angie.  Pros and cons of both?  Productivity vs flavor?

Its all boils down to productivity vs flavor.

Angie is stupid productive but fruit punch is way ahead on flavor.

In my yard I have Angie because I want something that will fruit every year.

The California grown Angie has excellent flavor and one of my favorites.

Also tried a Florida grown Fruit Punch last year and it was also excellent when fully ripe.

I have both of them growing on my multi grafted mango trees in the ground as they represent different flavor profiles I like. Both are really really good.

Angie is pretty dwarf if that’s what you’re looking for. I grafted mine 6 years ago and have done nothing but tip pruning to get more branches and it’s still under 8’.  I think fruit punch can get large.

Angie is a great mango as long as not overripened; they get funky papaya-ish taste when too far along.

Angie has a great spicy and sweet Indian flavor. I wasn’t very impressed the first year it fruited but the tree was probably too small and I’m sure that I didn’t pick the fruits at the right time.  I finally figured out that you leave the fruits on the tree until they are ready to fall off then let it sit on the counter for 1 day.  I go out and check fruits by bending them upward around 90 degrees. If they fall off with just the flex of the particle, they are ready for a day on the counter.

Current status of the tree (~50 fruits hanging):
