Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Cold Hardy Citrus Experiment Zone7A NJ

Looks like it is coming back very good and healthy.

2
I don't think you can use it for breeding cold hardness because most of them come back as satsuma from seed. The 3 seedling that have tri leaf are all different in some way. I have more growing from this past season so we will see how they turn out. I don't know on cold hardness so far since I protected them this past year but 1 of them even with that took some damage so they might not be all that cold hardy.

3
I did have a branch that had a lot of fruit and I would say did pollinate but then dropped all of them. Most of the flowers on mine do not have pollen that opens right and the ones that do set drop most of them, I do not know why but last year I got some pretty good fruit set, I'm hope this year I will to.

I’ve had one for a few years. I got it from Stan. Here it is in flower a week or two ago in Georgia. I still think it is a CiClem back-crossed with something else, likely Clementine.

Tom, How cold hardy do you think it is? I would agree with you it does not look like just a Tri cross with something else since it does not have many tri leafs

I did taste one I got from a friend and did the video on it, it did not have much tri taste to it. The small plant I have do not have tri leaves and look like it would not be very hardy, but I'm going to try it.

That is to bad. Hopefully it will come back from the root.  Us in zone have to keep trying all of these tri crosses to get something that will grow for us.

How does Swingle do where you are at? It seems to be the most hardy Tri hybrids I have tried so far.

I have seen your tree on our videos and it is beautiful! I'm going to try growing one in the greenhouse and keep it small. They moved me in to zone 8a which everyone knows is wrong, I'm in a solid zone 7 I would say here in north AL.

9
Ok that makes sense, use what you have. :) If you don't minder, where do you get your BAP paste and what does BAP stand for?

10
That looks like it might do it. Is there a reason you did Yuzu and Thomasville instead of using trifoliate? I was just thinking that using  trifoliate would make the chimera much more cold hardy for us in zone 7 or below.

They are a lot bigger. It looks like it might not have as many blooms though. Have you tasted the fruit on it? Also how big and how many seeds does it have compared regular Poncirus?

12
That is a good drawing. I would really like to see a picture of the cut bud to see how that looks, if anyone has one. I know all this is just doing it over and over again but would like to see how others are doing it.

My Conestoga 067 made it through 6F I had this year but like I told you the Conestoga 058 did not.

Wow that is amazing. I'm in your same zone type. 2020 I got down to 0F in North AL. I with you all the best on beating your cancer!! Did your Thomasville make it through -3F?

What Citrandarin and Citrumelo did you cross? This sounds like a great cross for cold hardness and taste.

Citrus basically needs 2000+ growing-degree days and wants more like 5000 GDD, especially as they get more tropical. Wilmington, NC (9a) has about 5500-6000 GDD per year. Seattle has about *2500*.

The US South and East just have hotter, more humid summers.

NC 💪 ☀️

I'm about 90 miles north of Wilmington, but regardless, yes, we have very long, very warm summers here.

It also helps that even after cold snaps our day time temperatures warm back up quickly. That hurts dormancy of course, but it also means that it's not unusual for temperatures around 70 F a week or even a few days after below 20 F freezes. And on the days with sub 20 F freezes, it's usually above freezing by mid morning.

I'm jealous of the good dormancy and milder weather you European and PNW guys have, but at least for citrus, it's a trade off I'm ok with.

Your right next to the OBX if you are 90 mile north of Wilmington. I knew a guy growing a Grape fruit on the OBX. Also there is a store out there growing olives and other cool stuff.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: VI-396/CRC-3881 (Citrondarin)

It does not look like a Prague. They say "The tree has trifoliate leaves and fruit that is somewhat like satsuma."  that means it should have a good taste. If you have extra seeds I would love to try growing them here in zone 7 to test cold hardness.

Assuming they are correct that it's a chimera, the seeds likely will not be particularly hardy, especially any zygotic because the only other citrus flowering at the same time was a Persian lime. But I will be sprouting them and I'll report any signs of trifoliate leaves or hardiness.

The UC researchers specifically told me via email that it had a bad taste, so I think they just mean the appearance of the flesh of the fruit is like a mandarin, but the flavor definitely is not.

I know some of the Prague seedling come back with trifoliate leave but most don't so I would think this would be the same since they are both chimera.

What was the name of the nursery you got this from?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: US-1284, SCS rootstocks

US-1284: Fruit length is 4.3 cm, diameter is 5.3 cm. This selection was developed by Kim Bowman as part of a large effort to develop Citrus rootstocks with less vulnerability to HLB.

US-1279, US-1281, and US-1282 developed during the same time period are 100% zygotic in seed production.

great info on this. Are you growing the US-1284 in your zone?

Great job they look great. Have any of these fruited for you? It's hard to tell yet on the ones I got from you but they are looking pretty good. I got down to 6F this winter so far.
