Stenocereus Stellatus red flesh variety $20 + shipping:

See Top Cacti Fruit thread for pics of mother stands.  I just cut them today so will need at least a week to callous.  Thanks.

Seems like most of us are familiar with Achacha.  I have heard though that despite it being touted as a common name for Garcinia Humilis that they are actually not the same species of plant.  That Achacha would be Garcinia sp. Achacha and Garcinia Humilis is a different tree that is not as commonly cultivated.  Also I came across a listing for a Garcinia Humilis cultivar on Bellamy's site.

So is this sp. Achacha or is this Garcinia Humilis?
https://www.bellamytrees.com/seeds/p/garcinia-humilis-cv-sadu-type-a

Common names make things blurry so just wanted to see if people can confirm if there is in fact a difference.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / A few hours in Mexico with pictures
« on: April 17, 2025, 06:57:23 PM »
I had to run an errand down in Tijuana.  It just so happened that where I was at was very close to some little mercado fruit stands.  What is considered more exotic and expensive here fruit wise is a bit more common there.  I was looking for Pitaya Agria (Stenocereus Gummosus) fruit specifically because they are native to Baja because I had seen someone posting a picture of them for sale somewhere but unfortunately could not find, might also be too early in the season.

Tiny Mangos:

Guanabana/Soursop:

Different bananas:

Mamey:

Pitaya Dulce (probably Stenocereus Pruinosus or Stenocereus Queretaroensis):

Worth checking out I would say, and if no fruit interests you there is always tacos! :)

Both of these seem very hard to find.  I messaged Waimea botanical garden to see if they had Koolauensis and they never got back to me.  Seems like introduced myrtle rust is messing with the remaining population.

E. Oaxacana seems like a very uncommon one as well.  Perhaps our TFF members in Mexico may have a lead?  I really like the plants native to that state.  Thank you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tips for germinating palm seeds?
« on: February 25, 2025, 05:06:54 PM »
Anybody have some general tips for getting palm seeds going?  I know some of them can take a long time.  I have heard of people "delidding" the really hard coconut shell type ones before planting out.  I have a number of Jubaeopsis Affra seeds that have been sitting in a bag of peat moss and pumice and it is taking a long time.  I did see maybe one is germinating now?

Is it better to make a slice into the shell and expose the embryo?  I even took a hammer and cracked the shell open on one and thankfully the embyro did not get damaged and I planted it without the shell, not sure if that will work but I have many more.  I just want to speed up this process of waiting if I can.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Does anyone have a "Mini" Mango tree
« on: August 29, 2024, 06:11:00 PM »
I had seen a guy post a video about this "Mini" mango tree, supposedly some selected cultivar from El Salvador.  Not sure if the tree is a dwarf or not, but the fruits are mini about the size of a Mexican lime, maybe slightly larger.  Is this one worth seeking out? Or is it just hyped simply because of the fruit size?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cancun/Tulum recommendations?

Any good recommendations for Cancun or Tulum in mid/late September? A good fruit stand or market or anything worth finding would suffice.

Hi all,

I have 2 community pots of Maprang and Abiu.  The maprang has 3 seeds and 2 of them already leafing, the abiu has 2 seeds and one of them leafing.  They are on the small side.  I would prefer local pickup since they are small.

Abiu for $10. ** SOLD **

Maprang for $20: ** SOLD **

Or take them all for $25.  Send PM if interested, thanks.

Hi all,

I have been toying around with idea of grounding some plants in a remote mountain area of San Diego.  Its likely a zone 8b from what I see online.  Is there any low or no irrigation plants that I can plant out here with little care?  Some facts about the property-
-in the mountains about 4200' in elevation
-receives infrequent snow in winter
-forested area blocks some of the wind up there, but still this can be considerably more windy/stormy than where I live
-lows in the winter probably average maybe 22f on cold nights, maybe even dip to about 17 if really cold
-average annual rainfall of about 24 inches (where I am gets a little less than half that)

The only thing I am considering at the moment is a cold hardy Opuntia as they do fine up there.  I do not intend on visiting there often as it is remote location.  Property does have well water on site if needed.  Are there any low or no irrigation subtropical plants that may survive on neglect in this area?

Hi all,

Check your local hispanic market chains if you are in Southern California.  I visited over the weekend and they sell plastic packages of about 5 pitayas per unit.  This is real pitaya - Stenocereus spp., not pitahaya (dragonfruit) that I am referring to.  It seems the consensus from the more knowledgeable collectors is that these are probably cultivated from Stenocereus Pruinosus.  I took a couple pics but am having issue sharing right now, I will try again later.

My opinion is it is pretty good, mine all had a nice deep red color flesh, maybe not as sweet as I initially thought but still good.  Tastes mostly like a creamier (and seedier at the same time?) dragonfruit with some mild raspberry notes.  Also, these spoil really fast in comparison to prickly pear or dragonfruit.  Like 2 days tops.  Good luck for those hunting out some fresh pitayas.  :)

Anyone have some seeds/cuttings or a source of this white whale of a cactus? There was some seeds available online a year ago or so and all sources sold out or dried up.   I did get some seeds around that time but they were not viable or dried out.

Hi all,

Just stopped by at Specialty Produce.  It's nice to try a bunch of different rare fruit before committing to growing out.  Just thought I would share some pictures.

I took the last abiu that was available so sorry if someone is looking for it.  Have a great weekend everybody.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone growing out Mouriri?
« on: February 16, 2024, 02:38:26 PM »
Wondering if anyone else is growing out species from this genus.  Appears to be from Myrtales order so somewhat related to psidiums, eugenia etc.  There is little info out there and I want to give them the best growing conditions that I can.  I have like a 3 inch tall M. Guianensis and seedlings are sprouting now for M. Cearensis.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bactris genus cold tolerance
« on: November 21, 2023, 01:16:43 AM »
Anyone growing these palms on the mainland?  Interested in attempting Bactris ferruginea but have no idea if they would withstand our winters.  Not a whole lot of info out there on their ability to take cold, I did find some page saying that will not take even 32F.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wampee seeds
« on: November 06, 2023, 11:22:02 PM »
Hey all,

I have some wampee seeds, ultra fresh.  Not sure of cultivar, tastes a bit like kumquat with a faint hint of grape, maybe slightly less sour with an edible skin.  20 seeds for $10.  Standard mail or pay $3.50 extra for bubble mailer.

Some people say kind of difficult to grow, I have one plant that's not from this variety and have had no issues at all.  Just avoid intense summer heat when young.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Germinated Soursop
« on: October 21, 2023, 06:58:33 PM »
I have a little bag of soursop seeds sprouting right now.  Probably like 20 to 25 in there, a bunch sprouting.  From fresh fruit eaten around June. Anyone interested? I could do $15 for the whole bag + $15 shipping.

I have some Plinia sp "Ană de Diamantina" sprouts for sale.  Got these from Luiz and selling for same price he sold to me $5 at pop.

Also have 1 Canistel seed, germinated and just starting to sprout - $5

For free because I need room and don't have much space currently (and because I appreciate this community):

"Regina" surinam cherry - 2 available - few inches tall, 3 sets of leaves

"Camino Laguna" guava - 4 available - very small maybe 1 inch or so

Stenocereus Pruinosus "Gray ghost organ pipe" cactus - several, all with some spines but they are very small, approximately 4 months old.

Local pickup only, sorry personal life too busy to mess with shipping anything right now.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Uvaria Rufa - slow grower?
« on: April 25, 2023, 12:44:55 PM »
Hey all,

I got some seeds from a seller here and got 1 to germinate a few months or so back.  To me, it seemed to stall out for a little while and did not put out any growth really.  After all this time, it seems like it finally is growing a hair bigger.  Are these normally slow? Mine isn't on a heatmat, just under a grow light indoors.

I plan on transitioning it to a better pot and probably outdoors soon.

Hi everybody,

Welcome to a community where us prickly nerds can discuss our passion for all things cacti related.  Inspired by the PGA thread for Psidiums and looking back on a thread I started called Top Cacti fruit, I decided this would be a great place for conversation and sharing thoughts.  While I don't have the length of experience many of you already do, I like many of you have started to put together a little collection of these low irrigation plants.

Cacti are resilient here in Southern California, anyone that lives here knows that they require little care other than warm sunshine and a bit of water to keep growth pushing.  Pests are far and few between for these plants.  Basically, except for a select few species, they require little care and resources which is great for the environment (and wallet! ;D).

So how is everyone's cacti plants warming up this season? I am seeing a lot new growth emerge here as our Spring slowly kicks into warmer temperatures.

Citrus General Discussion / Best tasting blood orange?
« on: April 04, 2023, 02:50:15 PM »
Hi all,

I don't know that much about citrus but I really enjoy blood oranges.  Can someone point me in the direction of the best varieties that are worth obtaining?

Hello fellow tropical geeks.

I have a few too many plants sprouting and I wanted to share the love.  This is for local pickup in San Diego area only.

Thai White guava (1 whole small tray available) - $2
These are outdoors already in a unheated greenhouse and taking the end of winter cold like a champ.

Bo Hong Star Apple - Chrysophyllum Cainito (3 available) - $3 each
Obtained from Frankies Nursery in Hawaii.  Apologies for having them in plastic bottle greenhouses for now so not the best container but they are happy for now.

Pitangatuba - Eugenia Selloi (1 available) - $4

Red Sugar Apple - Annona Squamosa germinated seeds (2 available) - $1 for both

These are inflation busting prices for some babies ready for spring and that is why I also will not ship them.  Shoot me a message if interested.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Top cacti fruit
« on: December 23, 2022, 07:07:57 PM »
So I have been getting a little more invested in different cacti species and it has me wondering what people's opinions are on their favorites/best tasting.

Currently I have some different varieties of dragonfruit going, bilberry cactus, eulychnia acida (sprouts).  Dragonfruit I feel is probably the most obvious as there is a fair amount of sweetness/juice.  Trying to currently germinate lepismium ianthothele which I barely know anything about.  Prickly pear doesn't taste bad to me but I find it sometimes too mild and gritty (prefer red to green).  I'm also interested in melocactus genus but don't know if it is worth the wait, seem to be a boutique kind of fruit.

Is there anything else worth possibly chasing?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eulychnia Acida "Copao" taste and time to bear
« on: December 03, 2022, 12:11:11 PM »
Hi all.  I recently got 2 of these species to sprout (out of about maybe 30 seeds so far).  Does anyone know what the taste is like? In my mind it looks like dragonfruit a bit on the inside so it looks like that but hopefully more tart like the name suggests Acida.  I just wanted a more exact description if someone has tried this fruit from Chile.  Also wondering if anyone knows how long to bear fruit? I realize may be in the longhaul with these species.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seashore mangosteen in California?
« on: November 15, 2022, 04:04:14 PM »
Hey all,

I am trying to germinate a seashore mangosteen tree (Garcinia hombroniana).  I have only had the seed for about a week and no sign of germination yet, though I hear they can sometimes take 3 to 6 months.  Does anyone have experience with germinating these and if they will do well outdoors in Southern California?  I already have a potted Achacha that seems to be doing fine outdoors (though this thing seems to be super slow growing, maybe because winter time is almost here?).

Thanks
