Tropical Fruit Discussion / Golden Monkey Jak
« on: July 31, 2025, 04:25:02 PM »

This jak is a seedling from Shot’s farm. It looks like it will be ready soon and it is a honker!
Will update when it is ready. Anyone else trying anything new or old for review?
About 3.5 yrs since planted.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Monkey Jackfruit or Mankale
« on: April 09, 2025, 01:46:28 PM »
A few years back I bought a seedling Jak labeled “Monkey”. I do know that that monkey jackfruit is the common name for another Artocarpus. This one is fruiting this year and it is definitely A Heterophyllus. I believe the seed came from Painter’s place. Does anyone know anything about this tree? Would be great if Shot would chime in. Was Fruitscapes trying to spell “Monkalle” ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Banana X Sequoia= Goldfinger

This flower is about 12 ft high. These goldfinger are massive and tall in deep swfl. Much taller than its cousin FHAI -3 sweetheart. The most wind resistant and needs no propping. Would never call this dwarf in my yard when well fed and watered.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Interest in Jackfruit on TFF
« on: January 19, 2024, 04:41:29 PM »
Are there still members on this forum have interest in jacks? I have posted a couple of times about them but from lack of responses it makes me think that current active members do not have that much interest. Fortunately, much enjoyment from reading and rereading older posts when there was some passion but is that gone? This seemed like the perfect place to share that passion or is it not anymore?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Zimen Pink Jackfruit Seedling fruiting
« on: January 16, 2024, 11:20:11 AM »

This was planted out about little over a year ago from a 7 gal pot. Tree is a seedling from Fruitscapes. Don’t know if I should let it hold any fruit this year as trunk is still a bit thin. PVC frame, damaged by coconut, was put up last winter for cold protection. Would you let it fruit?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / JACKFRUIT CULTIVAR VIGOR SWFlorida VS SEFlorida
« on: December 05, 2023, 09:15:58 PM »
NS1 grows really well in Naples where Mai 1 has much less vigor here unless helped along with NS1 approach grafted root stocks. One observation I have made is SL weevils only feed on grafted Mai1 and many seedlings (but not all) Mai1 jacks never on NS1 grafted or seedlings .Also, Nematodes seem to be much bigger problems in our sandy soil on our west coast vs east. Latex? Strangler fig trees a heavily latex producing related tree to jacks grow very fast, deep green and monstrous size in relative speed here. Latex? Is latex in jacks a natural nematicide?
These differences are readily observable on the formentioned cvs. I have other jacks where it is not as obvious being still too young. Maybe latex is the natural deffence that the Mai1 lacks? I have noted these differences in both numerous seedling and grafted trees of both NS1 and Mai1.
Has anyone noticed this vigor comparison on the west coast?
On the east coast in not sandy soil where nematodes are not as bad, have you had different experience with NS1 and Mai1?
Also as mentioned multiple rootstocks and heavy mulching are very affective tools to mitigate nematode problems that can make this much less problematic. So really input from growers who don’t mulch heavy or any other nematode defense is the main discussion.
