Campomanesias have been some of the most vigorous and cold hardy subtropicals that I've got at my farm.  This year all of my mature plants are flowering 3/7 for their first time. Pretty excited, got a couple xanthocarpas that are going for it this year, roughly 6-8 feet tall and explosive with growth.

Super stoked

They really don’t take long to sell out do they

Will have some more Yangmei available in a month and it looks like I'll have some grafted Yangmei available in a month or so.

Stoked ya got the plants Rob!

Lance, they are pretty sweet. I've got one seedling that has substantially sweeter fruits with very little acidity at full ripeness (waterballoon explosion stage).  But still a good eat before they reach that point.

Nate, so far I've only fruited what I believe are seedlings from Marcos.  I've got about 10 right now that are fruiting and just grafted 8 of them over to my one "Santa Cruz Sweet" Sundrop that is substantially fantastic.  I've got some other phenotypes that are beginning to flower this year so maybe I'll get a glimpse at the others this year, although I'm not particularly counting on it.

I've got Babaco planted in town where I live on what must have been a wetland with the water table about 3 feet below with flowing water.  My babacos have done exceptionally well here and I've also been surprised to see them do well at my farm where its at least 10-15* hotter and much drier with a much lower water table.  These trees have done great in full sun and seem to do quite well in our climate, although I could imagine it might struggle in a more tropical humid climate

Thanks Kaz! I've got pecan pie, something from Bonita Creek and some cool new scions coming in that should be an exceptional variety.  I'm mainly interested in the smoother eaten out of hand varieties rather than the drier ones currently.
Where did those fruits come that you got?
I've got a couple of 1g lucumas that have been in there too long, could send one your way if you would like!

~60$  using ~42,000 gallons/month on about 2 acres of irrigated orchard/crop land

Can you elaborate a bit on how the 'Sun Drop' pyriformis differs from generic "e. pyriformis?
I'm growing out a lot of phenotypes and have 2 out of 10 so far that have fruited and some are very distinctly better.  These are seedlings from my two trees that produce sweet fruit when ripe and is slightly acidic otherwise. These ripen in September whereas I have others that ripen in November/December that are too acidic to be enjoyed IMO.  Of the two trees I have one of them really has pretty low acidity and is very productive.

I am happy to see your site properly handles sales tax for me :)

There is no sales tax on food trees/seeds in Pennsylvania and it drives me crazy that Etsy & Ebay charges it anyway.  There is no way for residents to reclaim it government once collected.

Haha yeah, In California there's no sales tax for edible food items so that's always been my standard.  Maybe it should be change from state to state? I dunno, nobodys yelled at me yet haha.

Thanks everyone! Your support will go a long way in helping me reach my farm goals this year. Hoping to put in a shade structure and another (larger) hoop house for nursery production this year.  Can't wait to post some pics and update everyone once I get things mowed a bit. This is the year for the orchard, I can feel it!

Thanks again everyone

I just heard from a person who has a large fruiting tree. Also grafts them to seedling trees.

She said they take a long time over 5-7yrs to fruit from a grafted tree. So seedling may take even longer. I know a few other people with seedling trees that are over 5yrs old, not flowers or fruits.

Best thing for you to do is graft a scion from a fruiting lucuma tree. It will still take another few years after the graft heals to start fruiting again.

My plan now is to only graft fruiting varieties to my canistel, sapote, and maybe a lucuma tree if I can find one large enough for rootstock.

Awesome, that sounds interesting. Is she a part of the CRFG? Is it possible I may be able to source scion through you? I'm very curious to evaluate all the moist type selections that I can find!

Thanks for posting Kaz

I think it's important to tell the story of these fruits. I have certain cultivars of Feijoa that don't have a story that is easy to find online.  I met someone a while ago who I found out named one of the most interesting sounding cultivars in my collection.  I very much appreciated it and am happy to be able to tell his story. I appreciate Adam putting it out there plainly because there is a lot of ambiguity in the details of our community.

I, as a grower of subtropical fruit with the intention of selling it, am guilty of trying to create names that are easier for the american mind to wrap it's head around.  I think that there are some easy names to grasp but having something more relatable is ultimately what get's some people more interested in a fruit. I understand the debate around it and do see that it is important to provide the native name in some context. Common names are IMO the bane of the plant world as they are often so typical and unexplanatory. I love taxonomy and I love learning the indigenous names of plants and and the stories of plants created in the modern era.

We are all contributing to this plant community in whatever way it may be and I think we should be able to embrace the importance of all of the work we are all doing.

My Brazilian Orange has about 80% of fruits showing this damage inside the fruit. Thought it might be bug galleries but haven't really noticed any poop or larvae. Any thoughts? Maybe not ripening well due to the wet and moderate temps we've been getting during ripening period?

I think they were grafting the in ground plants. There are some wrapped scions in the picture and the previous story had mentioned grafting.

Awesome to see you've got a Laranja, I was curious to see how that fruit was! Stoked to hear your report when you make it happen!

I would imagine it's quite likely compatible with most Myrica species.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Flowering Male Yangmei Scion
« on: February 26, 2025, 10:43:44 AM »
Hey everyone!

Hope everyone else is getting the spring bug like us over here in Santa Cruz. Been some incredible weather and feels like it has finally arrived. I've got a bunch of Male Yangmei scion from a seedling that has flowered for it's first time.

Scion is $10 each with a minimum order of 2 scions and an additional $10 for shipping.

Thanks all and have a great day.

Nate

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Concrete + jackfruit?
« on: February 08, 2025, 05:51:44 PM »
I had someone rinse off concrete was hall over a Campomanesia xanthocarpa and it was fine. No noticable issues for the tree. Soil is a pretty good buffer, but definitely a good soak if that doesn't pose any winter risks for your tree.

18
Ohhh I'd be interested in one two if its available!

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Venmo, zelle Paypal?
« on: January 27, 2025, 11:14:36 PM »
Venmo is really super easy and it also feels secure and easy to find people and make sure you are paying the right person. I freak out sending people things on Zelle, feels hard to trust a first time transfer to someone. Paypal is good but yeah, they take a cut. If i'm selling plants at events or in person I take cash, venmo or card. Definitely prefer venmo but I get alot of pizza payments on those days, they charge businesses but not individuals.

20
Will these be inspected by the USDA or are they coming in illegally? I think we should understand the "inherent risk" associated.

21
Are these plants going through the USDA and just package in a way for easier inspection?

That yellow variety sure looks good.

22
Eugenia smithii? As in Syzygium smithii? I didn't realize those two genera were graft compatible.

23
This is the second crop of P. guineense x and they are certainly super delicious.  The robustum are probably one of my favorites too, they really lack any of the tannic kick from P. cattleianum which I am really into.  Although, I think that it ultimately makes them very sweet and a little less complex because of that.

Just got back from being in South Africa for a couple weeks. Got a boat load of P. guinense x that came in! So stoked! First big crop of these and they are a very defined and delicious Guava flavor. Truly a pleasure to eat. Also got lots of P. robustum (yellow) that are coming in. Not pictured are P. longipetiolatum & P. striatulum. I've got some P. acutangulum & P. guajava 'Orange' that should hopefully come in later this year.

Guava season is exciting.

That's picked a little under ripe. When they are glowing orange and like water balloons they can be very sweet and non-acidic.  I have a bunch of seedlings and one in particular is actually very sweet with good flavor.
