Nope, at one point, I had over 100 Lychee seedlings that were between 1-3 feet tall but none of them flowered in under six years.

I'm in California so they probably grow much slower than Florida.  My seedling took over 15 years to bloom.  It flowered for the first time 2 years ago.  Fortunately, it produced delicious fruits with the dry type flesh. I airlayered some and plan to grow it in a few different spots. Hoping it's more adapted to socal.

Eggo, that’s awesome! Do you happen to have pictures of the fruit? We have multiple Lychee seedlings growing out at Brads place so hopefully some of them will turn out good.

Are airlayers quicker to produce than are seedlings?

Yes, air-layered and grafted lychee should fruit in 2 yrs typically if you got the branch from a fruiting tree.

We grew a single Emperor seedling that fruited in 5 years. The fruit was almost identical to Emperor. I have posted about it before, but it seems like the older the variety the less chance of fruiting early. Multiple Brewster seedlings for example took 20+ years to fruit.

That’s an interesting point. Makes sense since modern breeding efforts probably don’t wait more than 10 years from seed to evaluate fruit.

Yes, especially since early bearing seems to be synonymous with regular bearing. The more generations we select for trees thst bear consistently, the greater the chance for early bearing. Directed selection--if you will.

Simon, unfortunately I got a new phone this year and have a hard time finding the pictures. It's blooming again so I'll take a picture of this year's fruits.

Not sure if fruits will set and hold. However, this is the earliest bloomer I've seen. The tree is in my possession now but i didnt plant the seed. My friend assured me that a seed was planted there instead of a sucker from the bigger tree in the same pot.

Have you tried clearing the dirt on top to see if it’s on its own roots? Could be branch that formed lower. This is incredible if it’s actually it’s own plant. From the looks of it, it doesn’t seem to be on its own

The tree is not mine. I didnt want to risk it. My friend allowed me to borrow it so that I can make an airlayer for myself.

The bigger tree is sweet cherry from Ongs. We'll know if the fruit looks and taste different.

Updating this post with a picture of the aforementioned fruits off the seedling Emperor. As you can see, the fruits are basically identical to Emperor.

5 years for Emperor, 6 years Fei zi xiao,12 years Nuomici none of them were spectacular you need to plant
"a lot" of seed to get something special.

I had a small lychee tree planted in ground and it fruited with 3 fruits after 2yrs from planting it. It was seedless and tasted good, but I should not have let it hold the fruits, after that it ended up dying. I don't remember if it was a seedling I grew or a small plant I purchased online.

I have a seedless lychee from a tree in Fallbrook that is flowering now. The seed was planted in 2016. The tree is about 5 feet tall and pretty skinny.

My Lychee seedling from Supermarket-bought lychee flowered on the third year and fruited on the fourth year in San Diego.
