« on: April 17, 2024, 01:35:34 AM »
Just curious if any member here is growng the Russell avocado. I have a grafted Wilson Popenoe avocado.

If you are growing the Russell avocado tree, and it fruits, can you post a few photos of it, would like to see how it looks, also with it cut open. I saw the photos from Carlos's website/blog, but just curious if any forum members are growing it. I'll be grafting some scion wood for someone, and they tell me the fruit tases very good.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Vista White Seedling Tree? Do you have One
« on: April 15, 2024, 03:21:28 AM »
Just curious if anyone here has been growing the Vista White Seedling tree that was sold at Exotica Nursery in SD.

I just got some large cuttings that I will be grafting and adding to my collection. If you have this tree and it had fruits, please describe the fruits and if it tastes as good as the true Vista White or not.

I also grew out many Vista White seedling trees from my tree, and now I have one large tree (20ft tall) which has been fruiting for a few years now. The fruit looks similar to the Vista White, but maybe not as pure white flesh as the original variety. Also the fruit looks similar but the fruits do not grow in such huge clusters as my true Vista White (see photos below).

But I do notice my seedling Vista White tree seems to be more tolerant of the sun, the fruit doesn't seem to get sunburned, but the real variety will sometimes. Also, the color of the skin is a little darker than the real one. I will need to take some good photos of my seedling Vista White this month when they fruit again. Taste did seem similar and so the only advantage might be that the tree is stronger, vigorous, and can tolerate the sun better.

For anyone that is growing the Marcus Pumpkin, please reply below to answer some questions I have:

1. If you grow it, can you show any photos of your fruit, outside and with it cut open to show flesh.

2. How do you like the taste of the fruit, and can you compare the taste with other named varieties.

3. Last question is for me. I just got some cuttings of the Marcus Pumpkin avocado and wanted to know if there are any serious avocado collectors out there that might want to buy a cutting of this variety.

I have enough cuttings to graft all the avocado seedlings and my tree with it, but the person who has the large tree said I could take a few more branch cuttings from his tree. Since I would like to spread this variety around in our TFF forum members collection, if you are interested in buying one cutting let me know.

The cost of the cutting will be $10 plus shipping if there are enought people (10) to make it worth my time. I will give the profit to the tree owner for letting me get his cuttings. I also made some fruit tree cuttings trades with him to get my cuttings I need for my own grafting needs.

I only have a photo of a partially cut fruit that was shown to me when I took the cuttings from the tree today, and got a whopper seed from one of the fruits he ate, so I will post the photos later.

So, for my question #3 above, it will be for TFF members only, who have been registered for a minimum of 6 months.

This is just a question for some of you members that might be interested in buying one (1) cutting of the Big Yellow Passion Fruit vine. I showed this photo of the one fruit I got to taste which I thought was better than any of the purple type fruits like Purple Posum, Fredericks, and a few others I tried from Brad and others vine.

This would be a potential Advance Sale List for 20 people that are really interested in this large yellow passion fruit.

I'm so happy that I will be getting this cutting and if there are some extras, I wanted to share it with our forum members who meet my requirements below.

So here's the Advance List Requirements:

1. Large Yellow Passion fruit cutting, qty=1 only per forum member

2. You must be a TFF forum member for a minimum of 6 months, and have purchased from me in the past. Please do not reply here or send me message if you don't meet this requirement.

3a. Cost is $10 for one cutting, length that will fit a USPS small flat rate box (5"x8")
3b. For CA residence, I should be able to use a slightly longer box (for same ship cost) for your cutting so it may be  up to 12 inches long, and probably can have some leaves on the cut branch for rooting.

4. Cost to ship is USPS priority, $11. This is the small flat rate box, typically 2-day delivery.
5. Total Cost => $21
6. Payment with PayPal only, "Friends & Family" option.
7. Lower 48 states
8. No guarantee that you will get to buy one even if you are on this list of 20 people.
9. I have the right to refuse to sell to anyone, if I don't reply then you are not getting on the list.
10. I will put you down in the order I receive your message, and I acknowledge you are on it.
11. The is an Advance Sale List. I should be able to let those who are on this list know by next week if you will be able to buy it. I plan to give the profits from this sale to the owner of this passion fruit vine for his trouble to give me some cuttings.

==================================

If there is any interest of my offer above, then send me a PM message by end of day Friday (midnight) and you may be on this list.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Loquat Fruits with Red Blush
« on: March 31, 2024, 05:52:59 PM »
Has anyone seen a loquat fruit with red blush fruits?

If you have a variety that shows any color besides the yellow/orange skin, please post a few photos.

I have one variety, don't know the name since the tag fell off, it has a nice red blush on the outside skin. Last year this same branch had fruits with this unusual splash of red on the skin.

I'll try to take a few photos when the rain stops. The fruit taste is excellent, white flesh.

Citrus General Discussion / Cocktail Grapefruit
« on: March 30, 2024, 09:23:25 PM »
Reply to Steve:

The fruit skin changes (thick or thin) depending on the rootstock. I have my large tre (photo above), it tastes very good and juicy, skin is medium, about the same thickness as Valentine. This cocktail is grafted on a grapefruit tree as interstock.

The same scion wood I grafted on an Lane Late Navel orange tree as interstock has smaller fruit with skin that is about 1/2 the thickness. That grafted tree seems to have fruits that are sweeter than the larger fruits on grapefruit interstock. Here's the other grafts on Lane Late Navel, see how much smaller the cocktail fruits from that tree are.

Hi, if anyone still has a grafted Fairhaven white sapote (from JF), I would be interested in buying 2 cuttings of it. I had some nice branches grafted with fruits before I had to dig up my large seedling tree and it died in the process.

This seedling loquat is one of my old time favorite, that is why I named it after my wife Sheri.

This post is for those of you who purchased the Sylvia (old name Betty) guava cuttings. color

Anyone else, please do not post here, make your own post.

 ===================================================
Ok, I shipped the last Betty/Sylvia guava cuttings to all of those people who paid for them. Today I will send out a few more because I didn't have it properly recorded, just read all my message from Feb 26 - March14.

I will post the list here until Friday so if you don't see your name on it and I missed you, please send me a reminder message, not posting it here. I will be able to see your message easier and I can communicate easier one-one in the message.

For this weeks last shipment (yesterday and today), all the cuttings were from my visit to the tree on Tuesday (3/12).

For some of you that didn't get the Free seeds (qty=5) I planned to give, you can let me know next week if you still want the seeds, just pay for the envelop/padded to ship it to you. I checked all the fruits I cut open and I will have enough seeds for everyone to get 5 seeds. Only a few people have the seeds in their package I sent out, the rest of you will need to wait until starting next Tuesday if you pay for the mailing cost. If your state does not allow shipping of guava seeds, then you need to let me know.

=> if I missed your order, you can always tell me to cancel it, and I will refund your payment.

Citrus General Discussion / Citrus Pollen Collecting
« on: March 14, 2024, 12:58:02 AM »
This is just a note to those people that I said I would send out some citrus pollen when my trees have flowers.

For USA residence:
You will need to pay for the cost to ship it, $11, USPS priority mail, small box to fit the plastic cup I will put the flowers in. No charge for the flowers I send you.

For International residence:
TBD, will contact each one of you to coordinate shipping. May just get pollen and send it in an envelop (if I can do it properly).

Just send me a message asking about what is flowering at the time you are thinking of using the pollen.

Marta posted in one of the other forums that her website has many cuttings (140) available starting 3/1/24.

Here's the website link below:

https://reallygoodplants.com/

She has good cuttings which are hard to find so they sell out very fast. I suggest you place your order now.

I just order a few more items I wanted to graft. Her price is reasonable, cuttings are fresh and she knows what she is doing so you should be getting the correct variety listed.

She is selling a few yangmei cuttings, hard to find mulberry like Skinner, Taiwan Long, Himalayan Steve Murray.

I had some inquires in the new guava I found (new unknown) so I did try to see if I can get some cuttings from this tree. Check out the photo of the Betty guava.

If anyone is interested in tasting the Pearl guava, I bought some from Weee and it was not bad. I also had the Crystal seedless fruit last year and they are about the same as far as flavor and taste that I can detect. Fruits are large, but the Crystal is seedless so it has that advantage. The Pearl guava is a large fruit so even if you remove the seeds (spoon out), there is a lot of flesh to eat.

I'll post some photos of it compared to a few of my other varieties I have now, the Melon guava and Tropci Pink guava fruits.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lilikoi - Which Ones Do You Grow
« on: February 18, 2024, 07:01:40 PM »
I think I have all three types of the Lilikoi plants. Here's a good summary describing the three types.

http://dembedirtytoes.blogspot.com/2009/11/ll-lilikool-ladies-love-lilikoi.html

If you are growing these passion fruits, can you comment on the taste and which one you like the best. I have not tasted any fruits except when I was in Hawaii many years ago and forgot what they taste like.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tropic Pink Guava - anyone growing it?
« on: February 18, 2024, 05:12:10 PM »
Just wondering if anyone else is growing the Tropic Pink guava. I have a few trees from La Verne nursery and the fruit is not what I expected. I have 3-4 fruits (first fruits) on my tree and they fruit color is white/red blush and the inside flesh color is white.

I thought the Tropic Pink guava has red/pink flesh fruits. If you grow any of this variety and have pink colored flesh, can you post a photo of your fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need Help to ID This Cherimoya again
« on: February 06, 2024, 04:18:09 PM »
Ok, I will ask again if anyone can help me ID this cherimoya tree and fruit. This is my oldest tree, got a small plant from a worker 25 yrs ago. The tree is super vigorous, has the largest leaves of any annona I have growing. I only found one photo of the fruit from 15 yrs ago. This tree requires hand pollination and I don't pollinate it so not much if any fruits grow on this tree. I'm using it as a strong rootstock tree to graft other varieties.

Here's the only fruit photo I have, and some photos of the leaves and branches.
