Meanwhile down in the Carolina Zone.....
Still no change in the plants. I have a Myrica cerifera that had leaves dry out then defoliated. Then it started to regrow about two weeks later . No succh luck with the yang meis. Is there any test other than doing a scratch to see if my plant are still alive? I ask because i have a jaboticaba that has been defoliated more than a year but STILL shows green after a scratch.
If they haven’t grown out by now, they’re probably dead. While the bark may still be green, the roots aren’t growing so it’s just time until the plant dies. Based off everyone successful, new leaves growing is promising. Of course they can die later but if no leaves it’s kinda a lost cause. I’d love to be proven wrong. Luckily there are more sources for yangmei now.
More sources of yang me? Pray tell, where are these sources? I was once told "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!"

Perhaps that was a movie I saw 8) ;D

I was reading Baker Creek's seed catalogue and it says that the ripe aril on their Jyunpaku bitter melon from Okinowa is sweet and tastes like cherry candy. Can anyone verify if this is true and if there is enough flesh to bother with? If it is, I may have to grow some just to try it. Note: for anyone who does not know, the aril is edible but the seeds are poisonous.
There's no bitter melon that is not bitter. Less bitter...maybe. Not bitter, never.

Mine was in the ground this winter. I'm hoping it survived and will  keep growing.

Ok. So the scions came in. I got them grafted on this weekend. I paid for five of each cultivar and got six.  Six "Sestronka and  six "Journey" scions all grafted on American persimmon rootstock i.e.the same tree. Sestronka had a "corky" core.  I have never seen that on a scion before. Journeys looked much more green than the Sestronkas. I'm hoping for the best. This is my second time trying to graft persimmons. First time was a complete failure due to cutting the scuons at yhe wrong time and probably grafting at the wrong time. I really want to try that Sestronka.
Threefold seems to be a winner. I will update on whether the scions take, push and  survive.

The campbell is actually available on Lara's website at the time of this post. Just ordered one.
Damn it, man. Informing everyone about the tree I want before I get one is not the done thing.😁🤣😁🤣 Next time tell old CarolinaZone first.  ;)As soon as I saw this post I tried to snag a Campbell but they were sold out. I was therefore forced  fill my cart some other way over priced stuff 8) I might be cyber stalking that website for the rest of the year until I can get one. I have a younghans, a subelle, a Vernon, a redlands, 2 called USDA all in pots.  I'm hoping someone will graciously offer some scions for some of the other cultivars I want.

Never seen this stuff before. I think the concept is good but do the work? Time for me to do some research. This could be a game changer.

Does anybody care to comment on how much light is too little. I have kept might is very low light since I got them. Could this be a problem?

Oops

Are the quails food or pets? Try neem oil because it is not toxic it just smells bad.

Speaking of the Facebook group, It seems like they have had some group buys so I wonder what their process for purchasing is. It would be great if we can get more of these trees in the pipeline.  More trees, more cultivars gets us more food.  ;D

I bought a myrica cerifera for a relatively low price a local nursery. It doesn't seem to have any branches that are a similar diameter to Yangmei's I received. The yangmei are more narrow. What do you guys think about grafting before or after bud break?

I have my original Biqi on a DNA sexed male Rubra rootstock and it’s growing at approximately the same rate as my An Hai on DNA sexed female Rubra rootstock.

Simon
Interesting, but the test would be a cultuvar to cultivar test. Anhai on male Anhai on female with 100 or so plants on each using the same graft type.

BTW
What is your opinion on adding nematode treatment to soil after potting. I did a rehydrate soak but did not treat for nematodes before I potted. Do any of you think it is worth it at this point. All plants have been potted since Monday.

I believe I have my first blooms on a few of my Yangmei plants today. I noticed that the morphology of the new growths coming out of my An Hai look noticeably different than the regular buds that form vegetative growths. This tree is growing outside and was grafted 4 months ago onto M Californica rootstock. I try to avoid planting trees with rootstocks originating from China because of the potential for them to have Root Knot Nematodes.

I am not positive that these buds will become flowers but they sure look different than what I’m used to seeing. Even if these are flowers, I will not get fruit this year because my males have no signs of flowering yet. I have also noticed these “assumed” flower buds on Biqi and Dongkui trees that are scattered around San Diego.

Simon
Gosh darn it! I'm sorry to let you know. Those growths are stanicite equipoidea bugs. Your trees are in great danger  Fortunately for you I happen to be one of three researchers that have a viable cure for them. I use a technique called "scion harvesting" to eliminate the problem. Just ship the infected plants out to me. I'll take care of it..... Really 😁

Found this:
Ronnie Demler
October 22, 2022  ·
So I contacted a Chinese yangmei researcher about the rapid die off that many of us experience with our seedlings. I described the symptoms and included several pictures. Here is her response:

    Dear Ron,

    Good morning!

Letter received! Myrica rubra likes acid yellow soil. If the soil is too fertile, for example, the nitrogen and phosphorus content is high, it is easy to die. The main symptom of your bayberry death is that the nutrient matrix is not suitable.

17
yup-

I didn't wrap and probably drowned my last ones-

there is a reason established trees are fetching such a premium-

Bill could have gone the cal-mei route and made people sign NDA's or only provide people to certain trees (I contacted calmei years ago and was told I could not buy a tree or fruit from them) but instead he is providing the opportunity to get a tree through the methods he described in the initial post.

Should they be watered after being planted? Or they should just be planted in a slightly moistened soil?
The black stems may not be dead. Snip the ends. I had some that looked black but had green underneath.

Mmm, meat column. So this variety of yangmei is like a slim Jim. Sounds tasty.
Like I said the translations is quite strange ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Meat column. If this was 4chan..... :blank: :blank: :blank: :blank:

Dormant oils don't work? Damn! I'm in the Carolinas and my stuff is in an unheated basement. We shall see.

Has anyone been following this Yangmei auction on ebay? Current bid is $3,000 is it because of the variety, hype, or demand? maybe all of the above. Im shocked, glad I got in on this group order.

Crazy! If anyone is interested in other varieties including this Hard Flesh, we can have another group order. But not very soon, first let’s recover our trees and make them survive.

Actually the Anhai which we ordered is also called Prince soft silk or soft flesh, is similar to or even more popular than the hard flesh in eBay bidding.
Don't be a tease Bill!!!!! 8) ;) 8) ;) 8) ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hey RevivalRoots. I'm not sure if you're a native English speaker but your description is a little strange for this plant. "Prince Anhai turns into a soft meat column of bayberry" sounds quite strange! "The meat is fine and soft, the juice is large, the sweet acid is moderate, the nucleus is small, and the edible rate is more than 95%."

Let me help you out. Replace "meat" with flesh.

"Prince Anhai turns into a soft meat column of bayberry" should be "Prince Anhai is a soft fleshed variety bayberry".

"The meat is fine and soft, the juice is large, the sweet acid is moderate, the nucleus is small, and the edible rate is more than 95%." should be " the texture of the fruit is soft and juicy. It is small seeded and has a 9 to1 flesh to seed ratio."

Capitalism. "A fool and his money are soon parted," so if they want it let them pay. Consider this, we in this group buy, are hoping to get viable plants that might grow and might not. The failure rates are super high and yet we still want the chance because we see it as an opportunity. Opportunity costs. It is to the buyer to determine if the price is too high. :-[

23
Yep. Completely possible outdoors in the zone 8 areas closer to the coast. Take note that his are protected.

24
I would love to see your results but I am in a mild zone 7 in the US and I haven't been able to expose them to low temps unless the are protected. They won't take freezing temps even at a 2 inch caliper for longer that a few hours much less a few days.

25
Simon-

What do you think of the setup here?

They are indoors (70f) in my room with a fishtank (highest humidity I can get) and parafilm wrapped

Planning to leave them like this until I see the first flush- water when the soil dries, and probably graft when some branches are hardened
Whoa!! I hope my trees are that big!! I think we're going to need a bigger boat!!! Those pots look like 3 to 5 gals. Am I correct?
