Tropical Fruit Discussion / Big problem with bees
« on: May 16, 2023, 02:48:01 PM »
Went to use the Weber kettle BBQ and discovered a huge hive of bees taking up 80% of the space between grill and cover.

Any ideas on how to deal with it????

Dan

Sweet Tart hands down!!!  Also richest flavor of any mango I've tasted!  I can send you some wood.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lotsa mangos this year!!!
« on: May 18, 2020, 11:48:47 AM »
My Glenn, Pickering and Sweet Tart are totally loaded this year.  I repaired the irrigation in these areas and the three trees look like they will produce twice the fruit of last year.  Good thing I have lotsa neighbors that love em.  Believe it or not one of them is a guy  from New England and doesn't like mangos!!!  Has no idea what he's missing!!!

I've heard good things about Lemon Zest.  What do they taste like - say compared to Pickering?

When you can see roots formed on the pups then make the divisions.  Otherwise replant and wait a bit longer.  If you can get your hands on some 6-3-16 made by Diamond R ferts you will see dramatic results.  Works magic on naners!  High Potassiummm!

Let them grow out till the naner is bigger.  When it's 3 ft tall or so you can separate the smaller pups by cutting where they emerge from the mama corm.  Best to ground plant if you want to have them fruit well.

Just finished topping the big tree.  Lowered the height by 5 feet..  Harvest was about 80 fruit.  Great tasting cado but enough is enough.  Will be bringing a few boxes to the Treasure Coast Rare Fruit club tomorrow night.   As I've said before --- great tasting little fruit!!!

My Lula is 35 ft tall now and I have to use a ladder with the picker pole.  I give away lots of fruit and the neighbors agree it tastes great!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Minimum spacing in bananas?
« on: June 06, 2019, 03:59:53 PM »
Looking for the absolute minimum distance banana trees can be planted together. Can I get away with 4’ feet between trees? I plan on letting two suckers pop up per tree. Thanks in advance.

How long are you planning on growing bananas?  At 4' spacing you should run out of space in 5 or 6 years.  After the main pseudostem produces a bunch anywhere from 2 to 4 pups will sprout around the trunk.   A few years later it gets crowded.  Unless you remove all pups save 1 or 2.  I use a digging bar when the pup is 18 inches tall or so.  And share with neighbors or forum members.

The Pickering has exploded with fruit.  The Glenn is coming along nicely as well.  The Sweet Tart has flushed new leaves and fruit are just beginning to show.  Looks like another great mango season in good old S Fla!!!

14
I've been using the Citrus Avocado Mango blend they sell in Home Depot.  Works fine.    But you must apply a rate matching your tree size.  Do the research for rates.   My Pickering has exploded with flowers and is setting fruit well.  It's 10 years old and produces lotsa fruit each year.

Bananimal  lets trade some dirt. My PPK has never had more flowers on it and my Glenn is still holding back.

Must be the dirt.   The Pickering and the Glenn are totally loaded.  Neither has seen any fert yet.

I would post some pics if I could remember how!?

The Pickering has exploded along with the Glenn.   The Nam Doc Mai and the Sweet Tart are just starting to kick.  The Po Piu Kalay is still languishing.  Can't wait to start chomping.

I have caught plenty of racoon in the Havahart traps .  Just put a peach or mango sliced open in the back.  Trick is, I think, to put the trap behind the generator where they can not see people in the back yard or the pool.

Same set up also catches possum and the occasional kitty.

My big Cogshall was knocked down by Irma.  I replaced it with a Sweet Tart.  I used to think my Pickering was my best tasting mango.  Not any more.  The ST is fantastic.  I hear the Lemon Zest is very good.  Any one agree?

21
I would ask for Lemon Zest if he can get his hands on some.  Me too if I had a source.

Chomped down my first Glenn and Pickering for 2018.   Let them get ripe to the color and touch.  Have to be careful the 3 dogs don't jump up to the table.  They get some too when all the folks are done.   Will be steady mangoes for several more weeks.

Where can I get my hands on some Lemon Zest?  Another crowd favorite.

Just ate my first ever Sweet Tart.  Brains fell out - fantastic flavor.  Thanks to Excalibur for the 45 gal ST I bought last year.   Hurricane wiped out my 12 yr old Cogshall.  No great loss really.

Glenn and Pickering will be ready soon.  Mango time 2018 ---- cant't wait!!!

Also planted a Cat Hoa Loc.  Fruit next year.
