Tropical Fruit Discussion / Silvervine Kiwi
« on: November 08, 2022, 02:49:44 PM »
Anyone growing silvervine kiwi? I would like to for cat treats as well as fruit. I see One Green World has listings for male and female vines but they are out of stock. Any insight into whether this is worth growing for the fruit would be helpful. Thanks!

I am airlayering a white, sweet guava right now that is to die for. I think it is just called tropical white. It makes fruit the size of a softball, intensely tropical smelling, sweet and creamy. I love to eat them after they are chilled. I sold most of the airlayers to City Farmer's nursery about a month and a half ago. I have a small handful left on the tree. If the ants don't destroy them I will be able to pot them up, lol. Luckily, I transitioned on to a pot at my place earlier in the year. Its leafing out quite well. I tried to root cuttings from the tree several times and had not success. I am growing lots of seedlings from the mother tree and plant to do approach grafts this spring. I just collected like a half a cup of seeds from fruit this week so if you are local I can give you some seeds. I am in San Diego.

Anyone growing it here?

UPDATE: The mother tree is beginning to go dormant, so I cannot accurately evaluate the airlayers with new grafts. I will pot the grafted ones up to evaluate next Spring. I will also be potting up the very large ones for future grafting projects. In the meantime I will only be offering 1-3ft LI airlayers for $35 each. For those interested in shipping, I calculated shipping for at least one airlayer to FL(as a gauge of price) via USPS(the only carrier that allows live plants). That package would be between $70 and $90. Non-standard box sizes are up charged quite alot in addition to the holiday shipping upcharge. I can do my best to trim down any airlayers to fit a cheaper size package. Anyway, I hope everyone has a good holiday season. Talk to yall soon.

I agree with FloridaManDan. I use the forum to buy and sell and learn about plants on the discussion forums. I reference the forums a lot although I don't post often.

Would you be down to trade anything? I have some fresh yuzu, sweet tropical white guava and pink and green wax jambu (Kecil, aromatic, some sweetness) seeds and sweet white tropical guava seedlings. I also can dig up some rooted cardamom shoots if that appeals to you.

Hey Benjamin,

I was wondering where you got your original P. alata plant from. Also, P. phoenicea and P. alata look extremely similar, only really distinguishable by the number of sets of yellow glands (2 for P. phoenicea and multiple for P. alata). Anyway, I just was curious about how you ID'd your alata. I have P. phoenicea and would love to get alata as a cross pollinator. Have a great week.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Ice Cream Bean Bulk Sale
« on: October 19, 2022, 09:02:12 AM »
Thanks for the clarification socalbalcony2. I guess I have been referring to the wrong inga. I thought any edible ice cream bean fell under edulis but I was incorrect. The pods are short, fat and have pleasant white flesh. Based on pictures of edulis pods they are much longer than the ones I have.

Hi All,

So we are flush with ice cream beans (mature and still great for seeds but the pulp won't be ideal for eating) and offering bulk discounts. Shipping the whole beans can get quite heavy so I have decided to do the following:

Option A:
I can ship the beans whole at a price of

$2/bean, minimum 25 beans
$3/bean, minimum 15 beans

Option B:
I can dehusk the beans and pack the seeds with pulp in moistened peat moss to lower the shipping cost. Price for this method would be per packed seed

$0.50/seed, minimum 50 seeds

Orders are processed on Sunday and Monday. Thanks! Have a great week!

Hey Brad,

Great to see that your tree is producing well! I am interested in some seeds. How many do you have? I can pickup along with the thermos I left at the fruit party.

I hope everyone is having a good week. The first batch of reserved airlayers went out this last week. More of the airlayers are rooting. I have quite a few people on the list, but there is no harm in adding more people as long as everyone knows that due to limited stock there is no guarantee that the later additions will get an airlayer. I will try to send out orders as the airlayers are sufficiently rooted.

Not yet. They are beginning to root. I will update my posting when they are. The macadamia and guava have both been very slow this year. I need to get on it a bit earlier next year.

Yes, buddyroo still has macadamia seeds. I will see him tomorrow and remind him that people are asking about macadamia nuts on TFF, lol.

Hey SD Dan,

I am in City Heights, SD. I would love to grab at least one seed if you still have them. I can trade you some avocado rootstock if you want. Hope to hear back soon.

Ok, back in town and processing orders every Sunday! Have a great week everyone :)

74
I will be out of town this week and not taking orders. Much thanks to everyone who reached out to me and have now received seeds! Have a great week everyone.

I have mine planted in the ground now in half shade. I have only noticed a little leaf burn, but that happened after I fertilized with fish emulsion. We shall see. This seedling sends up deep purple initial shoots which I understand to bestow a protective effect on the new growth. Please send more pictures of your variegated seedlings!
