Looking for Sansho and Sechuan Pepper plants (M and F). Open to trading or purchasing.

One World usually has them.
https://onegreenworld.com/product-category/herbs-spices-teas/peppercorn-plants/
https://www.tradewindsfruit.com/search.php?search_query=zanthoxylum

I don't have experience with them, but there are also:
https://wanderlustnursery.com/shop/products/p/sichuan-pepper
https://northwoodsnursery.com/category/863/

If you are interested with NA natives that likely can pollinate szechuan/sansho pepper:
https://www.possibilityplace.com/our-plants/zanthoxylum-americanum
https://redbudnative.com/

I got my americanum from Redbud. They don't list it in the catalog, but I wouldn't be surprised if they can get one.

In a pinch, I can mail you some of my babies. (Likely clonal shoots) May have to wait for spring, though.

Thanks! I didn't know that genus had so many edible species. I just ordered 4 mother plants of sansho. I imagine they are seedlings, not clones, but I will look for a taproot to verify. I got some sichuan pepper seeds in the mail this week, so hopefully I can grow those up without too much difficulty. I also reached out to someone at Planting Justice because they have both types of plants. Theirs are fruiting so maybe I will be able to get rooted scions sometime this next year.

It's often politically touchy whether Sansho/szechuan/sancho are different or not, and whether or not each one comes from a distinct species. My sense of it is that three species exist, but they are strongly similar and in culinary practice are mixed together in uncontrolled and mostly indistinguishable ways. (That is, something sold as any one will likely contain examples of the other two species mixed in)

In many ways, zanthoxylum betrays its relation to citrus. Also, they are amazingly spiny little bastards. It's like a hawthorn or a giant rose bush.

I plan to propagate them to sell leaves and peppercorns to local restaurants/bars. I will document any differences between the species that I purchase and try my best to compare them with descriptions. Last thing I want is to get X plant that was mislabeled as Y, lol.

Matt from Wanderlust Nursery here! We have plants in stock, they're just still dormant. Our clone of Zanthoxylum simulans is self fertile and has a good flavor. They are cutting grown.

We have carried Zanthoxylum piperitum and Zanthoxylum planispinum in the past. Zanthoxylum planispinum has a great flavor and is evergreen, so that"s neat.

Great! I just ordered a 1 gallon from you Matt. I think I also got the seeds from you. Thanks! If you get any other quality edible Zanthoxylum I would love to get some.

Hey Matt,

It's been over a week and there is still no shipping information for my order. Please PM me if you can. Thanks.
