New citrus varieties 2024
« on: April 03, 2024, 01:53:34 PM »
I have just read about new citrus varieties (new to me anyway) - Silkroad Lemon and Onix Blood orange. Anyone have them?

Silkroad lemon - https://www.freshplaza.com/europe/article/9545247/new-seedless-lemon-variety-silkroad-hits-the-market/

Onix blood orange - https://onixcitrus.com/

Here in the US, we have two seedless lemons, the Seedless Lisbon and Seedless Eureka. Both are very good tasting.

We can't get the Onix orange, looks neat, but we can get the Amoa 8 Tangor which is a darker flesh red color.

Seedless lemon

Those are some nice looking lemons. How is the taste compared to Meyer, and are they somewhat resistant to HLB??

No strong resistance to HLB, better tasting than Meyer, but Meyer is not a true lemon so not a fair comparison.

You can use HLB resistant rootstock and then graft the other lemons you like.

US812, US897, US942 are all good rootstock.

Looking forward to my new Moro Blood orange maturing in the next few years.

I hope you have better luck than me on the blood oranges.  I have most of them, except never grew the Moro blood. My blood oranges do not turn red inside or out. The only ones I have luck with red flesh are these hybrids, they are so dark red that even I get some fruits with nice red flesh inside. I did find a Ruby Red grapefruit that will have red flesh inside so that's a good one for me.

A friend grows blood oranges north of Escondido and their fruits are the reason I’m trying five miles from the coast in South Sandy Eggo. My little tree bloomed and one small fruit is hanging in there. Not expecting it to mature this year but it’s a good sign. Good luck!
