I have a price alert set up when it goes below $15 for an 8lb bag. Currently $13 on Amazon, limit of 3 unfortunately. It typically sells for ~$23 for an 8lb bag so I always stock up when it goes on sale as I go through 16lbs a season.

Thx

Good deal. Thanks

Thanks Brian...

Thanks Brian.

I just purchased a 50-lb. bag from Do My Own an on line company
-
Thanks.
-
If you buy a 50 pound bag you will get a much better deal. And the stuff keeps a very long time, just keep it dry.
-
At current amazon price, it is actually cheaper at amazon ($1.62/lb) when compared to 50 lb bag at Do My Own ($2.59/lb)
-
Do you still have the empty shells with this fertilizer when it's been expended? That was why I never got into this fertilizer. Not sure if anything's changed.
-
I just did the math too. It’s cheaper right now on Amazon. I got three bags.
-
The bad part about this fertilizer is that the empty prill stay around for years.
If you top dress many empty prills float on top of soil.
Look hideous.

I think i paid $85 for a 50 pound bag here in Hawaii last time i bought it. And prices here are usually a lot higher due to shipping costs. So you might want to try a different source for 50 pound bags. But price of everything seems to be going up recently.
-
I don't remember exactly what I paid for the 50-lb. bag of Osmocote plus, but it was under $100.00 and freight prepaid.

Looks like nothing has changed, unfortunately. I used to use this all the time but they went to those plastic pellets for some reason. I actually still have some old stuff that I still use on houseplants.

Yes it still has the empty pill shells. A shame, but I don't know of a better slow release option. If you have a suggestion let me know :)

Thanks for the heads up!

Brian, not trying to bash. I'm getting more lazy as I get older and consolidating my ferts. I've used Pro Gro Citrus and Avocado for last 4 years as my base fert. Does not last nearly as long but I add it monthly for potted plants and use it per label for in ground trees. I just don't want to mess with those plastic balls in my yard. Another chore for me!

I think the Prills have been persistent for many years, even before the coating change.
I was recycling some pot mix recently and put it thru a mesh screen by hand. That disappeared the pills, and hopefully liberated any unused fert still there.
-
Thanks, I bought a few bags.
Love to save money.
-
Thanks Brian.
John B, that GroPower fertilizer is great for the regions that have it in stock.

Thanks for including the photos in your post.
So, is everyone using slow release in addition to another fert? I thought many of us were using just Peter's 25-5-15 ?
I too dislike the prills - a lot of the plants I am getting now (not citrus) have green prills. Yuk.
-
I use osmocote for containers, but peters granular for in-ground trees. I like slow release for containers as I do not have a good way to mix fertilizer water for fifty container trees.
-
I use Osmocote Plus and Jack's 25:5:15.
-
even cheaper now... $11 for 8lbs. I have at least 100lbs stockpiled so far...Amazon limits 3x8lbs per order every few days.
-
These good for tropicals? Or should I just stick with organic granular and some chelated Iron and Manganese?
-
Too cheap to pass

Same, can't resist the deal.

I use osmocote for all tropicals, not just citrus

Before I made a purchase, I noticed many reviews stating the new formula has micro-plastics. Anyone have more info on this?
-
Osmocote, as others have said means lots of plastic pellets all over the soil and EDTA ( not easily biodegradable). I’m going to try lots of organic chicken manure and fish emulsion.
-
I like Osmocote plus slow release fertilizer. Using it along with conventional NPK fertilizers reduces the highs and lows of nutrition. Great product.
Empower, be careful of chicken manure, it contains high levels of soluble salts. Manure should never be applied fresh, Poultry manures are about twice as rich as that of horse, cow and pig manure.
-
The problem with micro plastics is the micro ones that you can't see, often from other sources.
I think you have to keep in mind the balance of the advantages of the slow release pills vs the negatives.
There are also effects of fertiliser run off to the environment, or loss of Nitrogen to the atmosphere which is wasteful of the manufacturing processes.
Slow release fertilisers can reduce this if used correctly.
Not saying the dead pills are not a problem.
There are other slow release fertiliser technologies, not all are coated products.
Composted chicken manure pellets, with added Zeolite are available in Australia.
-
I have been applying fresh chicken manure from my organic chickens to my trees with no ill effects. I think it’s more problematic for plants than trees and pot as opposed to in ground.
In terms of micro plastics they are everywhere. All we can hope is that a life form evolves to consume it at the microscopic level. I try to avoid plastic but its futile. Just make smarter choices when possible.

Same here. All my manure is added the same day I clean out the rabbit and quail cages. Other than foliar sprays in winter and homemade compost, the plants thrive perfectly fine. It is worrisome that so many members are okay with the added plastic in their ferts that inevitably they consume :o
