If you receive a tree that hasnt hardened off its initial growth I would be a little concerned as Ive had some losses being shipped plants like that from Lara. If your tree dies within the first 2 or 3 weeks I would say something. Just keep an eye on it and keep it out of direct sun for a bit.
My Campbell White Sapote died from graft failure around a month and multiple others had the same issue around that time. I was told it was too late for a refund 😑
Yep. I had the same experience with some of Julian's Stuff. When I met him he seemed like a nice guy but he will ship newly grafted trees with grafts that haven't healed. He will definitely send you a 8 inch tall half inch caliper with a two inch graft too. He does not have the best quality control on his grafting and he does do high grafting which I am not a fan of.  His high grafts are not as egregious as Peaceful Heritage. They graft way too high and charge way too much. People are sometimes in too much of a rush to make money and they don't know how to scale. Lara has definitely fallen off and I can only give him a 6 out of 10 in quality and service and value.

I think the employees are DELIBERATELY "missending" to get overtime, spite the system, get a raise, justify their jobs or are just plain mean. Maybe all of them.

USPS shipping is terrible. The employees are not competent and unaccountable because they are almost un-fireable. The tracking is inaccurate i.e. the arrival dates (delivery notices for items that HAVE NOT been delivered). Packages are not handled well. The service is over priced. Part of the issue is they have not modernized. Part of the issue is training. I do not advocate for privatizing the USPS the same way I do not advocate privatizing the police or the fire department. I do advocate them improving in all the areas that I stated.

I hope you both have your necessary services crumble on you. I know a former USPS who was fired years ago for failing to deliver spam mailers. These people have so much scrutiny and surveillance. Now morons like you are causing the government to be defunded. LMK if anyone else wants to voice agreement with them, nice to know who never to do business with. People being mass-fired and you want to pour fuel on the fire and complain.
Nate, Stay cool. 😲Did you read ALL that I wrote? If you are going through a bad spell I get it. Wishing an old man has his necessary services crumble is a bit much for just pointing out that USPS has issues.

You will get your tree. The size and quality may not be what you expect. Julian charges a lot for trees if you compare the price and size of his trees. For example Everglades farms will send you a a small 3gal for a 7gal price plus shipping. If it is during the Early spring or summer you will get a good tree and it will be there in three days on the east coast. They will also send you a dried out half dead tree without regard to the time of year with no regard to weather conditions. Everglades boxes are good and their boxing is ok. Julian's boxes are good and his boxing is great. You will never get a refund or a an apology from Everglades. I don't know about Julian. The point, different shippers have different strengths. I might pay more for something I can't get anywhere else.

Thanks again Simon. Appreciate the knowledge.

@CarolinaZone I haven’t used Superthrive in decades. Lot of controversy back in the day but I always had more than stellar results from using it. Also amazing they could go from 0% to 70’s+ rooting Yangmei. Thanks for the great share!
Controversy? Do tell. I actually am curious about the "soaking" methods used by our members. How would one gonabout soaking? Hopefully anone with knowledge will reply.

This is research on grafing onto wax myrtle.
Appreciate the excellent find. Of course I got the m californica and am hoping it works as good as the m cerifera. 2 years earlier is a lot of time saved.
Another link from some research done at the University of Georgia.

Even weather in the low 40s they seem to put it in reverse.
My in ground one has never had an issues with cold weather and its been there for going on 5 years. Its had temps down into the high 20s, and although I don't think it has ever had frost directly on it, plants around it have.
Now it certainly doesn't like the cold, but it definitely handles it better than I've seen people give it credit for.
I can confirm that cold by itself doesn't seem to bother in the 40's. Winter time I keep mine in an unheated basement under grow lights. Sometime with the lights on days at a time. They come into the unheated greenhouse around April. They never seem to have a problem when they go out doors in May.

I had a grafted one in a container that was doing great for months then suddenly declined and died.  I want to try again, including in-ground in my greenhouse.
Any reason why these would not survive on their own roots?

My friend Harvey has achieved a high success rate with his over one thousand trees growing on their own roots. Key factors to consider include soil acidity, moisture level, etc.
Acidity of what and moisture of what? If you have details we would like to know. We all want success. If your friend has any specifics please let us know.

Bill, I do have a question about group shipment drop off locations.

"  The export company will handle customs declarations and inspections, with shipping facilitated by DHL.
Trees can be packed 50 per box and shipped directly to the Bay Area, Los Angeles, or Florida.  "

I will assume the export company is responsible to get the Yangmei plants into the US, and if it doesn't pass inspection, they will ship another replacement round of plants.

Also, when you say DHL shipped directly to LA, does it mean it will be similar to having one person as the designated receiver of plants and we can all go to that person's place to pick up our own orders ?
No matter what I would like to be there.

16
I’ve received many inquiries about purchasing Yangmei trees, and I’m considering organizing the fourth round group buy this spring (mid-February to early March 2025).

To avoid potential delays or USDA inspection issues at customs, I will be working with an import/export company that offers expedited shipping and improved packaging. This ensures a higher growth rate for the seedlings.

Here’s how the packaging works:

Each seedling is individually wrapped with a suitable amount of soil or growing medium around the roots.
The leaves are trimmed by about 70% to maintain optimal moisture levels during transit.

The packages will be shipped directly to Southern California or the San Francisco Bay Area for convenient local pickup by most buyers, normally it takes about 7-10 days.

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Please share any expectations regarding the starting date, preferred varieties, pricing, or anything else you’d like to discuss about this group buy.

Looking forward to your feedback!

bill
These appear more uniform in size than the last buy. I received plants of various sizes and states of vigor/dormancy. How do you guarantee the quality shown in the picture?

Just the guys I need to talk to. I have been looking for that tropical apricot for years. I unfortunately lost the two I bought from exotica. Let me know if either of you have good source for those plants.

I got mine from Adam (flying fox fruits), he sells rooted cuttings from his tree. If they're not listed on his website shoot him an email or instagram message as he's got a bunch. Mine flowered a month after he sent it but didn't hold fruit last year. Hoping it holds this year.

Here are a few more pic's one more anyway having trouble posting

Are you grafting that high up to keep a tree form (instead of bush)? I assume if you cut the thorns off the trunk they might not come back? Thanks for the photos!
I will most def do that. I did not know he was selling plants.

You can maybe get scion wood which roots pretty easy from Marta @https://reallygoodplants.com/ or try FruitwoodNursery.com
good luck.
Thanks for the heads up. I have to wait about a month or so. I don't want my shipment to get frozen.

« on: January 20, 2025, 08:43:39 PM »
Has anyone grown this new loquat variety from China called "Big five-star loquat"?

I read it is supposed to be one of the top loquat fruit there. I did see some YouTube video of a guy picking the fruit and eating it.
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/NO1fkJAib44

I have seen some photos online, it looks like the flesh is orange, has only a few seeds and is supposed to taste excellent. If you have a grafted tree with the fruit, please post the photo of your fruit.
Ok. I admit I watch a lot of Chinese fruit videos. A lot. They come in 3 categories
  • Older Unattractive person showing their produce
  • Young Attractive woman faking like she is actually a farmer
  • Guys who seem like fruit molesters that come on panting with desire, seductively peeling or slicing fruit which they inevitably slurp.
Looking for that scion when it hits the States.

Thanks All! I am back on the hunt again.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Identify this guava
« on: January 04, 2025, 10:32:15 AM »
Hi guys!

Before last year I bought guava seeds from tradewindsfruit.com. They called red guava-Psidium sp.2. They wrote: "An unknown Psidium sp. bearing dark red fruits somewhat like the strawberry guava. The fruits are much larger than and up to a few times bigger than the strawberry guava. The pulp is white/translucent with a pleasant, sweet, strawberry-guava flavor. May be a separate species or maybe just a variant of the regular strawberry guava."

I think this plant is not strawberry guava.
This is the plant

From left to right:purple forest guava, red guava, strawberry guava

Left strawberry guava right red guava

Hmm. I just saw this. I will order some seeds. thanks

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Chinese Persimmon cultivars

Hi,

I am cultivating those non astringent persimmon cultivars:

Gwang Yang
Ichi Ki Kei Jiro
Ichi C 2876
Hana Fuyo
Hey Usirius. Are the last three in your list Chinese? The names are Japanese. Can you tell us anything about the fruit?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Chinese Persimmon cultivars

Does anybody here have experience with Chinese persimmon cultivars? I am particularly interested in the non astringent varieties. Is there anything distinct about them? There is a definite difference between American persimmons and Japanese but not much difference between Japanese and hybrid JapaneseXAmerican persimmons.

25
I would think all the ones from the former soviet union would work.  I would also say cultivars like Sweet and Wonderful would work too.
