Hi all,

Just stopped by at Specialty Produce.  It's nice to try a bunch of different rare fruit before committing to growing out.  Just thought I would share some pictures.

I took the last abiu that was available so sorry if someone is looking for it.  Have a great weekend everybody.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone growing out Mouriri?
« on: February 16, 2024, 02:38:26 PM »
Wondering if anyone else is growing out species from this genus.  Appears to be from Myrtales order so somewhat related to psidiums, eugenia etc.  There is little info out there and I want to give them the best growing conditions that I can.  I have like a 3 inch tall M. Guianensis and seedlings are sprouting now for M. Cearensis.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bactris genus cold tolerance
« on: November 21, 2023, 01:16:43 AM »
Anyone growing these palms on the mainland?  Interested in attempting Bactris ferruginea but have no idea if they would withstand our winters.  Not a whole lot of info out there on their ability to take cold, I did find some page saying that will not take even 32F.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wampee seeds
« on: November 06, 2023, 11:22:02 PM »
Hey all,

I have some wampee seeds, ultra fresh.  Not sure of cultivar, tastes a bit like kumquat with a faint hint of grape, maybe slightly less sour with an edible skin.  20 seeds for $10.  Standard mail or pay $3.50 extra for bubble mailer.

Some people say kind of difficult to grow, I have one plant that's not from this variety and have had no issues at all.  Just avoid intense summer heat when young.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Germinated Soursop
« on: October 21, 2023, 06:58:33 PM »
I have a little bag of soursop seeds sprouting right now.  Probably like 20 to 25 in there, a bunch sprouting.  From fresh fruit eaten around June. Anyone interested? I could do $15 for the whole bag + $15 shipping.

I have some Plinia sp "Ană de Diamantina" sprouts for sale.  Got these from Luiz and selling for same price he sold to me $5 at pop.

Also have 1 Canistel seed, germinated and just starting to sprout - $5

For free because I need room and don't have much space currently (and because I appreciate this community):

"Regina" surinam cherry - 2 available - few inches tall, 3 sets of leaves

"Camino Laguna" guava - 4 available - very small maybe 1 inch or so

Stenocereus Pruinosus "Gray ghost organ pipe" cactus - several, all with some spines but they are very small, approximately 4 months old.

Local pickup only, sorry personal life too busy to mess with shipping anything right now.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Uvaria Rufa - slow grower?
« on: April 25, 2023, 12:44:55 PM »
Hey all,

I got some seeds from a seller here and got 1 to germinate a few months or so back.  To me, it seemed to stall out for a little while and did not put out any growth really.  After all this time, it seems like it finally is growing a hair bigger.  Are these normally slow? Mine isn't on a heatmat, just under a grow light indoors.

I plan on transitioning it to a better pot and probably outdoors soon.

Hi everybody,

Welcome to a community where us prickly nerds can discuss our passion for all things cacti related.  Inspired by the PGA thread for Psidiums and looking back on a thread I started called Top Cacti fruit, I decided this would be a great place for conversation and sharing thoughts.  While I don't have the length of experience many of you already do, I like many of you have started to put together a little collection of these low irrigation plants.

Cacti are resilient here in Southern California, anyone that lives here knows that they require little care other than warm sunshine and a bit of water to keep growth pushing.  Pests are far and few between for these plants.  Basically, except for a select few species, they require little care and resources which is great for the environment (and wallet! ;D).

So how is everyone's cacti plants warming up this season? I am seeing a lot new growth emerge here as our Spring slowly kicks into warmer temperatures.

Citrus General Discussion / Best tasting blood orange?
« on: April 04, 2023, 02:50:15 PM »
Hi all,

I don't know that much about citrus but I really enjoy blood oranges.  Can someone point me in the direction of the best varieties that are worth obtaining?

Hello fellow tropical geeks.

I have a few too many plants sprouting and I wanted to share the love.  This is for local pickup in San Diego area only.

Thai White guava (1 whole small tray available) - $2
These are outdoors already in a unheated greenhouse and taking the end of winter cold like a champ.

Bo Hong Star Apple - Chrysophyllum Cainito (3 available) - $3 each
Obtained from Frankies Nursery in Hawaii.  Apologies for having them in plastic bottle greenhouses for now so not the best container but they are happy for now.

Pitangatuba - Eugenia Selloi (1 available) - $4

Red Sugar Apple - Annona Squamosa germinated seeds (2 available) - $1 for both

These are inflation busting prices for some babies ready for spring and that is why I also will not ship them.  Shoot me a message if interested.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Top cacti fruit
« on: December 23, 2022, 07:07:57 PM »
So I have been getting a little more invested in different cacti species and it has me wondering what people's opinions are on their favorites/best tasting.

Currently I have some different varieties of dragonfruit going, bilberry cactus, eulychnia acida (sprouts).  Dragonfruit I feel is probably the most obvious as there is a fair amount of sweetness/juice.  Trying to currently germinate lepismium ianthothele which I barely know anything about.  Prickly pear doesn't taste bad to me but I find it sometimes too mild and gritty (prefer red to green).  I'm also interested in melocactus genus but don't know if it is worth the wait, seem to be a boutique kind of fruit.

Is there anything else worth possibly chasing?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eulychnia Acida "Copao" taste and time to bear
« on: December 03, 2022, 12:11:11 PM »
Hi all.  I recently got 2 of these species to sprout (out of about maybe 30 seeds so far).  Does anyone know what the taste is like? In my mind it looks like dragonfruit a bit on the inside so it looks like that but hopefully more tart like the name suggests Acida.  I just wanted a more exact description if someone has tried this fruit from Chile.  Also wondering if anyone knows how long to bear fruit? I realize may be in the longhaul with these species.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seashore mangosteen in California?
« on: November 15, 2022, 04:04:14 PM »
Hey all,

I am trying to germinate a seashore mangosteen tree (Garcinia hombroniana).  I have only had the seed for about a week and no sign of germination yet, though I hear they can sometimes take 3 to 6 months.  Does anyone have experience with germinating these and if they will do well outdoors in Southern California?  I already have a potted Achacha that seems to be doing fine outdoors (though this thing seems to be super slow growing, maybe because winter time is almost here?).

Thanks
