Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado Question
« on: June 21, 2023, 12:23:27 PM »
Hi, Perhaps I didn't word my question correctly in the search function. Is there a list from the fastest maturing avocado fruit to the longest?I know Lila Avocados are very fast for instance and some others take a year or more.

Thanks

Read about the Tropic Sweet Apple developed in Florida from the Anna apple. I am just north of Houston Texas and although still early for planting have been asking my local nurseries about this one with out any luck. Does anyone no where I can order one on-line? Just Exotics in Florida lists them grafted on standard root stock, but I need semi-dwarf at the most. Just getting to old to deal with tall trees.
Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Water tote as a planter experience
« on: March 04, 2021, 07:01:05 AM »
Just wandered if anyone had used a water tote as a planter and how well it worked for them, also what was the longevity (did the plastic break down)?
Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Extreme cold heat alternatives wanted
« on: February 12, 2021, 11:51:27 AM »
Hi all, I live in Conroe Texas (8b) and we are going to get hit with the coldest weather since 1989. I usually throw sheets over my citrus with halogen floodlights under and they have always done fine, but they are talking about low's of 9 degrees for my area... So I don't know if my normal winter protection will suffice. Also the halogen bulbs are getting harder to find and more expensive. So I am looking for other heat sources that are easy and inexpensive to use. Normally we see very few freezing days in my area.
Thank you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Maybe a silly Avocado grafting question
« on: March 25, 2020, 04:11:15 PM »
Has any one tried grafting a smaller type of avocado tree to root-stock and then a larger type to that to see if it would influence the larger types full grown size? I am thinking of something like zutano seed with a Lila cleft graft (no buds to push) and then a Fuerte cleft grafted to that. The final tree being a Fuerte, hopefully influenced by the Lila to be a smaller tree.
Thanks

Dupis, Choquette, Day at my Conroe Texas lowe's. They were a little smaller than the other 3 gallon plants and ten dollars cheaper? I usually think of these as Florida avocados so I was surprised to see them offered here in zone 8b.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pinkerton vs Wurtz Taste Comparison
« on: March 02, 2020, 10:48:04 AM »
I have one prized location along the southeast side of my home where I want to plant one of these two avocados. They both seem easy to keep small, so easy to protect during the winters here in 8b.
Just looking for opinions on taste and such from veteran growers.
Thank you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / cold hardy avocados
« on: February 18, 2020, 03:16:14 PM »
Well it's that time of year again, getting the itch to try some new varieties. Saw a webpage from The Florida Fruit geek talking about Del Rio, May and Gloria Avocados, but I haven't found anywhere to get those from. If anyone knows of a source please let me know.
Thanks
P.S. These are supposed to be cold hardy.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mexicola avocado taste and types
« on: June 16, 2019, 05:32:01 PM »
I've looked online and most places talk about the anise leaves, but is there any of that flavor in the fruit? I'm not a huge fan of licorice.
Also are there different Mexicola avocados depending on where you get them from?

Thank you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Brogdon avocad question
« on: September 18, 2018, 08:45:40 PM »
Thought I would see if anyone has used Brogdon avocado seeds for grafting. My tree seems to be extremely vigorous so I thought the seeds might work well because of the vigor.
I haven't gotten any fruit yet, just transplanted it from a pot into the ground.

Hi, I am in zone 8b and after dealing with a week of below freezing temps earlier this year I have decided to try and figure out which of the many Mexican avocados will work best for me. I have been thinking about a Oro Negro, but I have never had the opportunity to eat one. The perfect tree would be upright and on the small side, ( easier to protect from hard freezes) it could be a poor producer as long as the quality was good. Just me and the wifey, so we don't need a lot. :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best avocado seed for rootstock?
« on: July 04, 2017, 09:54:06 AM »
Hi, I have had good grafting success with seeds from the (slim cado's) sold at my local grocery stores, but with all the new research going on for disease/pest resistance along with vigor and such. I was wondering, what is the latest greatest type of avocado seed to use? I am in Texas so of course it has to be salt tolerant and I also wondered if the root stock seed used would have any affect on taste and if it would make a less vigorous strain like Wurtz for example more vigorous.
Thanks for any info you can offer.
P.S. I would also like a source for the seeds :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New Avocados for colder climates?
« on: March 28, 2017, 05:04:32 PM »
Thought I would see if there were any new or newly discovered avocados for those of us in colder climates?
Some winter protection would be used while they are getting established.
P.S. I am in zone 8B and have several trees now.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wanted cold hardy Dooryard Avocado
« on: January 18, 2017, 03:55:28 PM »
Are there any types that are non- commercial and cold hardy. Just me and my wife to feed so I don't need huge yields, just good quality. Most commercially available cold hardy types have poor taste and texture, we are wanting something close to or better than a California hass but has to be able to handle our colder temps here in zone 8b. Of course it will be protected while small and planted next to a south facing wall, but will have to able to handle the cold when large. Looking for scions.
Thanks

I currently have a couple of Mexican unknowns from a friend in California, Bonny Doon, GreenGold, Stewart,Brogdon, Bacon, Gwen and some seedling Bonny Doons.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / squirrel protection
« on: March 20, 2016, 10:40:25 AM »
Hi, I am trying to start early this year and get a jump on the inevitable Squirrel Invasion. Last year they got my first avocados before I did  >:(, hate those furry #@&^*(%$... Anyway I am looking for the cheapest least labor intensive protection I can find to keep my crops for myself. Obviously we have plenty of other critters here who are more than willing to steal my fruit, but the squirrels seem to be the major offenders. If I had the funds I'd have drones with lasers patrolling my fruit trees twenty four seven ;D. But sadly I don't have that kind of money, I do have lazy chihuahuas that look at the squirrels but that's as good as it gets. I am open to all suggestions that don't include poison or guns.
Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Wasps / Avocado
« on: March 16, 2016, 08:04:09 AM »
Hi, My avocado trees are in bloom now and I was wondering if anyone else has noticed how much red wasps/hornets? seem to love the blooms? They don't appear to be hurting them, I assume they are after the nectar. With our mild winter the bug population is exploding here.I don't recall ever seeing so many insects before, both bad and good ones.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / oro negro avocado
« on: March 10, 2016, 09:04:06 PM »
Hi, just a quick question to those of you who are more familiar with the different avocados. I have looked at the Oro Negro on Top Tropicals website and then one on Rivers End Nursery's website. They look like completely different fruits to me? So are they the same and just look different because one is grown in Texas and the other in Florida or is one a completely different type. And if so who is who and which is the best?
Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bonny Doon Avocado
« on: March 02, 2016, 08:41:52 PM »
Hi, I was curious. Does anyone have a Bonny Doon Avocado planted in ground? I would like to know how it is doing for you. I was told from someone else that the original tree is in a protected location which leaves the cold hardiness stated somewhat suspect. I would also like your thoughts on taste, productivity and growth.
Thanks

They sell them at Chico Farmers Market Saturdays year round; Wednesday mornings 7:30 noon, North Valley Plaza. They also have a website http://www.chaffinfamilyorchards.com/where-to-buy/
If anyone is going to the farmers market and picking any of these up i would be happy to pay for a few fruit or seeds from them.
