Citrus General Discussion / “Starburst” Pommelo, what variety is it ?
« on: December 27, 2023, 03:04:30 PM »
Our regional grocery store chain ( H-E-B) is selling an excellent pommelo marketed by Noble Citrus (Florida) as “Starburst”.
It is excellent quality, very high brix, my wife’s favorite citrus.

Does anyone know the variety and if trees are  available for retail sale?

I went to a citrus tasting hosted by Texas Rare Fruit Growers before Christmas that had several pommelos including Valentine and Hirado Buntan.  None of the pommelos came close to Starburst.

Thanks,
Louis

Rind tastes like Meiwa Kumquat rind.

Flesh is very juicy, good balance of sugar and acid tending to be tart.
Very refreshing when it is hot.
Fruit does not segment, usually eaten as a whole fruit in bites or sliced in half.

I have a very large Nazemetz.  It was damaged in Hurricane Nicholas Sept 2021 and was pruned back severely.  It has a lot of  1-2 year wood.

If you are going to the Texas Rare Fruit Growers Scion exchange in Houston on Saturday March 4th I can bring some.

Sunquat is an open pollinated cross between Satsuma and Kumquat.
It was found in Jamison’s PYO Citrus Orchard in Pearland Texas.

I was good friends with the guy who found it and grew it, Louis Walden of Brookside Village, Tx.
He recently passed away.

Sunquat fruit is slightly smaller than a tennis ball, rind is edible like a kumquat, fruit bears on ends of branches.

Unfortunately I didn’t cover my very large Sunquat in the Texas Feb 2021 freeze and it froze to the ground. It was a seedling and is coming back.

 :(
There was lots of excitement over green ischia not too long ago.

I have grown green Ischia for years.  It is excellent when frozen on cookie sheets and stored in ziplock bags.  Thawed it makes a nice off season treat.

Also consider Dr. Condit's "Conadria".

When you get caught up, I would like to purchase ten.

Thanks
