Citrus General Discussion / Lemon Production in Zone 5
« on: February 25, 2023, 05:57:16 PM »
What potted lemons tree varieites would ripen principally in mid to late summer? I am interested in putting lemons in containers in a greenhouse during the winter and having them outdoors during the growing season.

I might do that. Are Meyer lemons grafted or are they normally own rooted? I also read Eureka trees cant be dwarfed because they are compatible with this root stocks. The info I found said they are all semi dwarf but i can't find info on what root stock they use for semi dwarf? You guys know anywhere to look that stuff up?

Citrus General Discussion / Propper tree for potted Citrus

Hello,

I am trying to grow potted Meyer Lemons and Eureka lemons in a greenhouse in winter, outside in the summer . Question is, Can I order seeds for these two and start them in containers as own rooted plants? Will the pots dwarf them or am I stuck buying grafted dwarf versions?

The main issue is, I would like about 50 trees and the grafted dwarfs would escalate costs.

Awesome I will add that to my list.

So far I got:
Sudachi
Thomasville Citrangequat
Xie Shan Satsuma
St. Ann Satsuma

Does anyone know what the earliest lemon or lemon substitute that ripens is?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Arctic Frost / Orange Frost Satsuma?

Can anyone comment on the flavor of Arctic Frost and Orange Frost Satsuma, and perhaps compare them to Miho Satsuma?

I live in west central Louisiana on the 8b/9a line, and am currently growing 6 varieties of Satsuma's (3 mature 20+ year old 12-15 ft tall trees in 2 varieties, and 3 early varieties (St Ann, Louisiana Early, and Armstrong Early)that have been in the ground for about 3 years, ) along with a meyer's lemon, and a CaraCara orange, that are also 2-3 years old.  Being  quarantine state I have limited selection of citrus available, generally being limited to the offerings from 2 citrus nurseries, one of which just introduced Arctic Frost and Orange frost to the state, the other is working on Miho's but they will not be ready for another year at least.  I would like to plant some more citrus, but as you might imagine I am running out of sheltered locations, as well as places close enough to the house to run electricity for christmas lights, etc.

Which leads to the current question, how is the taste of the above mentioned varieties, and are they worth growing as a backup in case of a once in 50 year super freeze?  I have ample space for more trees, just not in sheltered locations.

thanks Ike

Which Satsuma ripens the earliest for you?

Do you think it ripens earlier than "Early St. Ann."? Have you grown any of these personally?

I am looking at harvest citrus trees into mid-October at the latest when we get our first hard freeze in zone 5b. I plan on having potted citrus trees in a hoop house until the weather is nice and I can transfer the trees outside. I also can not bring them into my house, or bring them back into the hoop house until the fruit is gone.

What citrus fruits have the shortest growing season?

Right now I think the Tville Citrangequat, 10 degree Tangerine, and Sudachi might work.
