Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango alongside Durian
« on: July 13, 2022, 11:16:59 AM »
What’s up TFF.

Fresh off DurianWriter’s latest tour, I’m inspired. Saw and learned a lot with my second Penang visit - arguably the world’s finest place for quality Durian. I saw many more mango trees than I noticed last time (only due to traveling to different locations).  But mango doesn’t appear to produce well there.

Durian and mango seem to have different needs - South Florida appearing near perfect for mango but deadly to Durian.  Penang is near perfect for Durian but hit and miss for mango. So it left me curious.

Who, if anyone, has seen a place where both thrive?

Eat a perfectly ripe fruit punch mango for me. As you're eating it, let a couple drops from the juices drip to the ground for the homies that can't be there.

Hilarious

This is just from google

I grew several Queen Guava from seed collected @F&SPark years ago. The pictured fruit isn’t like what I got which is more pear shaped.

Nicely  done doc. My tree is tiny so now I know to give it space.

Thank you for letting us know Simon. I only had the privilege to meet Leo once and that’s all it took to be impressed.  Comments here testify to his character and stature. I bid his family peace.

The real question is where are you getting all these rare mangoes?  :P

I concur

What's Plutonic Pleasure, Rob?  (Is it polyembryonic?)

Mono

For those of us absent dry seasons and no appreciable cool season, these could be interesting prospects beyond kasturi. Keen to hear more b

What’s up Simon. It seems another year will pass before I get to visit. But I shall. Keen to know how this project is going. I’ve been reading up on growing Durian and the proposed go to methods to advance time to production is using double root stock (as well as grafting onto wilder cousins with greater disease resistance and drought tolerance).  Reminded me of your mango work...

61
Future I don’t want to jack thread but how has LZ production been progressively (or not) over the decade?

I can only relay what others have said. Dr. Campbell once remarked if he judged the tree up to Year 12 (or so) you couldn’t give him a free tree.  But around then, it took off.

62
Taste wise, among 230 varieties I’ve tried over the last decade, I’ve never seen anything touch a good LZ. PPK comes closest. OS is top 5 all time great. Disease and waiting years -  a decade -  before LZ production hits its prime is another matter.

63
Singaporeans definitely love Durian. Even available at the airport. I’m sure some bloggers and google maps can hip you to the biggest markets.

For example

Enjoy your travels.

64
Contrary to popular opinion, there’s objectively only one time to pick PPK.

And that’s after you’ve called me over to enjoy some.

It’s an all time great.

Anyone heard of Z-20? Gotta mango last year with that written on it. Was very good (floral, no fiber) and different, so saved the seed and growing a mono seedling. The 2 people that probably hooked me up both denied having "Z-20" or knowing anything about it. Feel like I was abducted by aliens, as no one will corroborate my experience.

Yes. This was featured in the most recent Future’s Florida Fruit Feast. It’s a citrus (Orange/tangerine) flavored delight. I had never heard of it, took and change and am  glad I bought a dozen. I also confirm: mono seed.

Alex has some new to me Zill varieties listed on the last page of this:

Curious Alex or anyone else has experience with the fruits and if some has since been named.

Curious to know if anyone’s seen new flowering on a seedling.

I found flowers today on Dr. Campbell’s boys’ monoembryonic “Martian Pride”. Planted circa 2010.

Picked one of my tree ripened Paheri seedling mangos this week.  This was the first year of production from a 5 year old seedling located in inland SD county (Escondido).  The growth from this tree is extremely vigorous, nearly 9 feet tall, with long thin leaves similar to the growth and leaf patterns described online from Paheri mango tree variety.  The fruit grew in one large cluster (see pict) with a bright red blush on the sun exposed side.  The taste of the fruit was amazingly sweet with an intense pine resin flavor near the skin and stem.  True to its parent, the mango is completely fiberless with smooth flesh.  Seeds from the fruit are monoembryonic.  This tree will be a very nice complement to the grafted Zill varieties on my property.  Although this is just one example, it should help dispel the myth that seedlings from Mono seed fruit always result reduced quality from the parent tree.  Plant those seeds!

Well done. Name it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sugar apple or not
« on: October 22, 2021, 02:57:25 PM »
That rollinia has large segments and that usually means fewer seeds and higher flesh yield. I find the texture more appealing and the flavour more lemony when eaten slightly under ripe.

So I took Mike’s advice and now concur.  Eaten earlier than normal rollinia becomes similar, not identical, to sugar apple.  In some ways superior given no fiber.  Thanks Mike
