Citrus General Discussion / Re: Nutrient problems in grafted kumquat
« on: January 09, 2022, 07:59:49 PM »
Thank you.  I Know that every Kumquat graft had extreme problems starting growing.  They all had to have their main trunks cut before any amount of growth of the scion started.  I don't remember whether last years graft were this yellow, but I do remembering if any of them was going to live or die.

This tree has lost most of its leave.  I think I am going to put it in the unheated basemen and provide some light till spring grow time.

Things look good for 16F for the NZL.  As for 11F,  Most leaves are badly contorted but when crushed they smell nice and lemony.  No bark splitting.  The smallest twigs show some desiccation.  a few of the lower leaves look fine.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: CCPP Budwood Price Hike
« on: January 09, 2022, 10:59:31 AM »
I have 4 varieties,  Meiwa, Fukushu, New Zealand lemonade, Valentine Pomelo.  I have grafted my own buds to different rootstocks.  CCPP is far to expensive.  I  live in Ohio where grafting of non certified citrus wood is legal.  All four of the original tree cultivars were gifts from friends.  Citrus is so difficult to grow up north of the Mandarin - Dekopon line it is not wort purchasing trees of any citrus cultivar.  Grafting is free.  go buy a Seville sour orange and you got seed to seedling to grafted trees to grow.

This is a 5 month old Fukushu kumquat tree on Flying dragon.
My 15 month old Fukushu on Flying dragon shows no Issues.  Both trees are in the same soil and fed with Jacks 25-5-15.  PH around7

I have Planted the cuttings that have been tested to 15F.  The temperature dropped to 11F and the tree in inside for good to get final results.  The lower trunk was insulated so I can graft a mature NZL mud to the roots for a own cultivar roots NZL tree of fruiting age and still small.

just brought inside from 11F

3 hours later.

The tree still looks good and will go outside tonight for the 9F low.  I will remove several high branches to root.  If they truly survived 15F I will know in 2 weeks.  If the tree dies tomorrow morning but survived the 15F we will all know the limitations of full hardened NZL

Very little visible damage.  A few leaves' stem collapsed.

Going down to 15F tonight.  My NZL is outside in cold out of the bright sun.  When the sun drops behind the hill I will place the tree in and insulated doughnut to hold the roots at freezing while exposing the trunks to very cold air.

Cold Hardy Citrus / cold test on seedling New Zealand lemonade
« on: January 02, 2022, 09:39:09 PM »
Just brought my Seed grown New Zealand lemonade tree inside So far it has seen 22F, 22F, 20F, 25F, and many hard frosts. to date. I am warming the roots up to hibernation temperatures for that of an in ground tree so I can put it back outside for the up coming 17F, 13F to determine cold hardiness of this cultivar 01-02-2022

It is now down in an unheated basement to prevent coming out of dormancy.  It has seen 2 months with most nights below freezing.

I have Ammonium sulfate 21-0-0  Do I have to worry about BIURET in my feed

I wouldn't think so, you could contact the manufacturer to see if there is any Urea as impurities.
Do you normally use Ammonium Sulphate  ?? It may tend to drop pH, but that may be useful to balance hard water.
You may want to consider Ammonium toxicity problems, rather than Biuret toxicity.
Just watch the strength of your feeds, and don't apply in cool dull weather.

I have Blue berries, 7.8 pH hard water and soil just under ph8  The blueberries explode with this

4 layers of  glass each side.  No heat needed yet this fall/winter cold.  New Zealand lemonade is on the left side and Valentine pomelo on right side.  NZL grafted on C35.  Valentine  is grafted on US897

Meiwa kumquat on Left side and Fukushu kumquat on right side.  Both kumquat trees are seed grown.  4 layers of glass

Harvey lemon is reported to be able to take cold to 10F.  My New Zealand lemonade has sail through 2 nights at 20F and 3 more night around 22F and more frosts than I have fingers and toes.  I have them all still.

I currently have 50 pounds of ammonia sulphate and have 0 pounds of low biuret urea.  is ammonia sulphate just as good.
My kumquat trees flower in early summer.  Should I wait till May 1st before spraying?

Citrus General Discussion / Transplanting a grafted Fukushu kumquat tree
« on: December 12, 2021, 01:06:45 PM »
Before and after a repot of my Fukushu kumquat tree on Flying dragon.  The top part is 14.5 months old since the T-Bud started growing and the FD roots will be 3 years old 1-1-22.  I guess the big question is If the roots are Flying Dragon and the top is Fukushu and I were to trim the top and transplant the roots Am I  trimming a Fukushu while transplanting a Flying dragon.
