Citrus General Discussion / Re: Turunji - A Citrus You Eat Like An Apple
« on: February 25, 2024, 02:51:46 PM »
The citrus in 2" pots I have bought from Logee's have been severely root bound. I had to remove all soil from the root balls and cut away large circling or "J" shaped roots. I had to do that to two Turunji's I bought from them and both now have yellow leaves, which I believe is due to root problems.

This is common from logees. Every plant I ordered was like this. Super tiny pot and root bound for high dollar prices.

I’ve tasted these before and wasted my time growing these. After growing these before trying, I told myself I would never buy a plant before tasting it first. Total disappointment.

If you are in the southeast miracle grow garden soil in the dark green bag is really good. I pot most of my citrus and tropicals in this with a very small amount of manure

Harvey lemon is my favorite lemony taste and it’s an ornamental bush in my landscape. Massive harvests too. It’s on flying dragon rootstock

The wait is almost over! Dragonfruit is major slave labor on the east coast zone 8 with no greenhouse. Too much humidity and storms. I Lost a few branches and fruit during a December tornado but still got 3 for a tasting. I really really hope fresh picked DF blows store bought out of the water like some claim.

Mine do great in miracle grow garden soil. Note that It is a different blend in different areas.

Anybody eaten or grown this cold hardy citrus? Just got mine in the mail. I see that it’s pretty seedy. Bummer. Cold hardy to 15 on flying dragon rootstock

Citrus General Discussion / Re: What if I repot now?
« on: January 19, 2024, 02:31:18 PM »
I’m in the same zone and repot if you need to. I would maybe move it in and out of an unheated garage until free of frost. Bringing it indoors will cause leaf drop stress. I also would not fertilize after repotting unless it’s kelp. Repotting is a stressful event for plants and hitting them with fert will have negative results

From my experience I find this to be true. Especially for citrus. I always wanted to proclaim my food is organic but sourcing organic micro nutrients such as iron can be difficult and more expensive. I also added rabbit manure to induce more microbiology in the soil but nothing beats inorganic fertilizer

Can someone fill me in why I see painted trees in cali and not in Florida? I always thought this was more human error by removing shade leaves and pruning the trees up allowing the bark to be exposed

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Nursery near Orlando
« on: January 06, 2024, 07:38:54 PM »
I’ll be visiting Orlando for 2 weeks and wanted to know if there’s any good nursery’s you recommend. Cool and unusual is my cup of tea. Looking for houseplants other than orchids. Also looking for a small sugar apple to bring home. Willing to drive if it’s worthwhile

Can we see your tree?

Very impressed. All the leaves are nice and dark even with fruit. No signs of nitrogen or iron deficiency! I’m jelly

Fung Twang is delicious and a very large star fruit.

Dragon fruit?

I’ve been successful with even more tropical fruit in my zone and want to try sugar apples next potted

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Favorite banana?

I had lucky harvesting dwarf Orinoco in zone 8b. After all the labor of love I put in I got one hand of bananas that were very similar to the grocery store.

I would pass on dwarf Orinoco

Tropical Fruit Discussion / TFF sticker decals?
« on: December 16, 2023, 06:16:02 AM »
Has anyone produced any cool stickers to show off the forum to the public? I’m not sticker savvy but maybe it would be cool to vote on a few designs (if members created) and each year have a new version. Charge a few bucks and put the money back into the website perhaps?

I guess this means that banana fruit production is based off stored energy?

This is my hope. I will update in a few weeks. It does make a good conversation piece in the garage

And glad to hear others have quails! I love my lady birds. Way more fun than chickens. Believe it or not I’m in a HOA with their rules stating no livestock. So technically a quail is a gamebird and I also house them in the corner of my garage out of view.

19
Here’s an update. It’s still pushing out growth from the flower stem. Don’t mind my quails lol

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How’s your starfruits?

My fung twang made its first fruit in a 7 gallon grow bag that I purchased this July. Do carambolas have 2 harvests per year? Also what varieties are your favorite? I picked this one off many of your recommendations. Thanks!

Nice! Wow I’m growing the other species and was always told I’ll never grow it in a pot and get fruit. How old is it? And will the leaves flush again?

Thank you both. I may grab a few cuttings of S8 and start growing it while deciding over the next year or two which adult dragonfruit needs to go

Uh jealous. I don’t get snow but winter with frost and freeze is a major let down. I think im destined for the boonies of south Florida.

Guys are my yellow dragonfruits going to stall and not finish up? They flowered the first of October. Here in Myrtle beach the lows all month have been in the 40s. Any lower than 45 and I push them in the garage that stays 60.
