Tropical Fruit Discussion / turpentine mango
« on: August 09, 2019, 09:52:38 PM »
I started some turpentine mango seeds for future rootstock.
Several of the seedlings have 2 sprouts. Is the turpentine mango poly?
or did I get seeds from something else?
Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / dragon fruit planting
« on: May 25, 2019, 11:45:30 PM »
I bought 13 cuttings from 4-5 types of dragon fruits about 3 months ago,
I was going to bury a 6" x 6" post and place 4 on each post and was wondering if I should mix the types?
I have 5 sugar dragons and could put 4 on one post or I could mix them with
with the others? I plan on putting 3 posts in the ground in one area.

THANKS

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Black sapote
« on: March 27, 2019, 10:58:55 PM »
I got a seedling black sapote that is 1 1/2 years old and about 4 feet,
It has 3-4 clusters of fruit? I didn't even notice the flowers. It was suppose to be
a Silas Wood variety known for very large bland fruit. It may not hold them but
Has anyone heard of a seedling having fruit set?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / White sapote thinning ?
« on: March 27, 2019, 10:54:42 PM »
To thin or not to thin, My Supersweet white sapote is loaded with fruit for the first time.
It had 3 last year and dropped them early.
I notice a few have dropped off but there are some clusters with up to 10 fruit.
The tree is around 5 years old and 8 feet tall and 8' feet wide probably 70+
fruit on it. Do they thin themselves like an orange tree or should I pull some?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / ilama compatibility
« on: March 21, 2019, 04:29:37 PM »
I tried to read the old threads involving rootstock compatible to graft ilama
on. I read you can graft ilama on ilama or pond apple. Has anyone been successful
grafting red Genova ilama on atemoya, sugar apple or cherimoya rootstock?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eugenia florida
« on: December 06, 2018, 02:19:31 AM »
I have 2 Eugenia florida that I raised from seed. I put one out in full sun and it
went downhill. I dug it up and put it on the porch in a 15 gallon pot. I was trying to figure out
what caused the decline? Does anyone have experience with this tree?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mycorrhizal Fungi
« on: November 04, 2018, 05:18:16 PM »
I have decided to apply a root drench to some plants that has Mycorrhizal Fungi.
I use a synthetic miracle grow and wondered if it would destroy the Mycorrhizal Fungi?

I sort of decided to do some trial and error but would appreciate some feedback if anyone has
experience?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Atemoya question
« on: October 04, 2018, 02:47:36 PM »
I have heard some interesting discussions on which rootstock to graft atemoya.
I have never heard anyone mention grafting atemoya on another atemoya seedling?
I wonder if anyone has tried it?
I was told that an atemoya will only live about 10-12 years on sugar apple rootstock?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / air layer fertilizer
« on: August 14, 2018, 09:31:01 PM »
I have been trying to air layer a couple trees this summer. Today I checked
my two longan air layers and one of them had a nice root ball going. I cut it and
put it in a pot. I was wondering if I should fertilize it to help the roots fill out?
It's sitting in a shady area and I really want it to take. I found this tree in an
abandoned yard and it took me a month to figure out who owned it and get permission
to airlayer it. The guy who owns the property doesn't know what type it is, he
actually told me it was a lychee. He never waters or fertlizes it and it had the
biggest sweetest longans I have ever seen. He said it fruits every year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jaboticaba fertilizer
« on: July 21, 2018, 11:37:33 PM »
I was wondering what people use for fertilizer for Jaboticaba seedlings.
I currently have two different types and both have quit growing and the new leaves are
coming out yellow and not greening up. I am using only rainwater which is suppose to be 7 ph, is this an issue?
I just bought some 365 day slow release 13-5-11 nutricote and wanted to check with the forum before I
apply it. Both of these are trees I can't readily get seeds for and I really want them to thrive.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / sulpher application
« on: January 09, 2018, 11:38:28 AM »
I recently read several articles that state pine needles and oak leaves actually don't lower the ph of soil?
OK so back to sulpher. How much do you add per tree and how often? I was told a handful every 6 months
but I was hoping to hear from others on their experience. I plan to add only to trees in the ground.

Thanks for feedback
