Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: It's National Iguana Awareness Day!
« on: September 15, 2019, 12:24:44 PM »
Just solved the mystery of the Poolside Pooper. Had to move a camera and manually search because the motion sensor wasn't triggered. Most bets were on raccoon or a opossum; turns out it is a nice sized iguana that's been frequenting the side of my pool on almost a daily basis. Think it has been doggin my passionflowers and who knows what else. Plenty of moringa, papaya, bugs, and lizards for it to live on.

might want to chill on the daily watering. mangoes like to dry out a little.

Try hand pollination. You can pollinate guanabana with just one flower, pollinating itself. Ants are just there milking scale.

My two sugar apples are in a shady spot not getting max by any stretch sun and fruit very well without any hand pollination.

OTOH, my soursop (bought as a 7' tree and in ground since 2014) gets lots more sun, has MANY ants in the flowers to pollinate them and as yet has produced zero fruit.

Soursop is not pollinated by ants. Beetles do the job.

I guess they're on extended vacation for a while in so. Flo. :-)

actually they can do well with partial sunlight.

probably would be fine for a while. might be restricted in growth as it matures.

why not go for it and see what happens?

Success! Feels so good just to see a little green popping.

They both handle winters here in Miami well, but I think mangosteen is more cold sensitive. Mangosteen needs high humidity too.

2284
it's good, but not great. probably should've thinned the fruit some. several fruit are on each branch that is fruiting, so probably depleted the tree a bit, resulting in blander fruits.

2285
Pretty sure its a seedling. It's from TopTrop.

Looking scary for the eastern central coast of FL. Best of luck to everyone in the cone of chaos.

Think we will just get doused down here.

When Irma hit almost 2 years ago, was amazed how some tree crowns were bent over to the ground, some partially uprooted, yet potted plants were still standing and unharmed. Couldn't believe they were not at least knocked over. The strong winds tend to start about 10-15 feet above ground, like a flying hacksaw. So, small/short trees should be okay.

Good job FisherKing!

So hand pollination worked very well:

Does anyone have an idea whether this is the large variety or small?

It's probably waiting for the leaf eating rascals to return.

I doubt that little spider ate all that leaf.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fire in the Amazon...

While there may be less burning of rainforest now than in the past, the stakes are much higher now. It's like a person saying they  "used to smoke 2 packs a day, but now only 1 pack, so that's better." The aging and depleted lungs can't take what the young ones can. So too, the Amazon.

Whether mangoes "need" chill hours or not, sudden cool temps are associated with flowering. Certainly appears to be true here in FL. In areas that stay warm year round, dry spells and other triggers are involved in flowering.

Looks like a home has been found. Thanks everyone!

Hello.

I have a 6 foot + Alano sapodilla, and a 6 foot + Beaumont macadamia tree that need to be dug up to make room for more mangoes. Both have produced fruits/nuts. Partially dug up already, might need some digging help. If you are interested and have something to trade let me know. Otherwise, free if I don't have to finish digging them up.

South Miami area. Local pickup only.

These are some great passion fruit!

I order off an on, between ripenings of my assorted passiflora. Eat em daily when possible.

As good as any I've found.

That is promising!

35 or so rollinia's ripening here.

Some guanabana here and there.

First flowers on Geffner. Still no fruit.

Also, waiting on San Pablo custard apple that has been flowering well, but no fruit. Mother-in-law is growing this in the rich soil of Hialeah, hopeful.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Which Mangos Are Left (Florida)?
« on: August 18, 2019, 02:04:43 PM »
Picked up some local Keitts today at the farmers market.

2298
My main producer, a 16 foot or so Glenn, produced 81 mangoes this year. Last year it produced 99 (give or take on both years). The tree is a little bigger this year than last, so it seems more than a 20% decrease in production from last year to this year.

Thanks JY! They (LF) have seedlings for 25. PIN has Thai Lessard for 30. Think I'm going with TL and will graft another variety or 2 to it.

Hey everyone.

Who can point me in the right direction? Looking for nice cultivate of sugar apple/sweetsop. 3 gal tree or whatever.

PIN currently only has Thai lessard. Does anyone know how that compares to others?

Local or shipped is fine.

Thanks!
