Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Raven Persimmon

One Green World. Those trees are pretty expensive $49.95 plus shipping. I want one but the last few shipments I got from them were pretty raggedy. That and I have 11 Persimmons already.

So, have we established a gold standard protocol on what to do to keep the trees alive? I see the pictures look like they have grafting tape wrapped around the trunk. Did they come like that or is that moisture preservation technique?

This calycina barely made fruit last year. This year feels different.

No lie. I'm super jealous. I might have to switch zones. You willing to adopt a lightly used, middle aged,  tropical plant enthusiast? ;D

Have we settled on the fact that Black Diamond is a unique cultivar and is not another name for Biqi? If yes here is my updated list.

2x Biqi Female
1x Biqi Male
2x Dongkui Female
2x Crystal Female
2x Late Growing Female
2x An Hai Female
2x Black Diamond female
Thank you for your patience Bill.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best time to go plant shopping: All regions
« on: February 12, 2022, 07:57:33 PM »
I just got back from Phoenix. I did a quick trip to O'Leary's. They had NOTHING that they had listed on their website that I wanted event though it was listed as in stock on their website. This is the second time they burned me :'(  >:( . No. Not that type of burn. ;D. I'm not messing with them anymore. They had a lot of plants that looked sub-optimal if compared to Florida and California nurseries (in general).

That being the case when is the best time of year to go shopping for plants in your regions? When is the time that has the most inventory? When is the time that has the best inventory?

333
Bill, please add 2 An Hai to my order. Here is my updated list:
2x Biqi Female
1   Biqi Male
2x Dongkui Female

I will fly in to pick mine up.  I just need the dates to be accurate to cut my overall trip costs.

Hey elouicious,

I actually now use a customized fertilizer that I developed for rapid growth. If you use Osmocote slow release, I would use 1/2-1/4 of what they recommend. I previously use Dynagro liquid fertilizer.

I don’t think these trees will do much growing in Winter but I expect them to grow rapidly in Summer.

My soil is a horrible heavy clay with lots of rocks and poor drainage, that is why I plan on planting most my test trees at my parents and in laws. My backyard has better soil so I believe it will grow fine back there.

Ok,
So what's in the secret sauce? You know we want the recipe ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: White Sapote for South Florida?
« on: February 02, 2022, 07:01:54 PM »
NEWS FLASH:  I was just listening to the Q&A with Julian Lara from Jan. 20 on Fruitful Trees YouTube channel, and he raved about a white sapote called Campbell (named for Carl Campbell), which he said he'll be propagating this year.  (He also said he'll be propagating Butterscotch sapodilla--for those who were interested in that variety of sapodilla.  I hope he won't be charging an arm and a leg, but you never know.)

Ive been growing a 1g Campbell from I purchased from Lara last summer and its growing fast. My sue bell I bought as a 3g cant keep up with it.
I'm a little jelly. What time were you there? I'm planning on doing a caimito run in about a month.

337
How long did it take to flower? If you have a guaranteed male. Would you be willing to sell some scions?

338
Post some nursery pic's please. ;)

There seems to be no casualties in the unheated greenhouse...yet. I haven't been out there to check. Day time temps are in the 40's now with nights around 25. My heating method is to heat up a 50 gal trash can with hot water. It seems to raise the temp of the greenhouse about 5 degrees. So 30's with 100% humidity.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: I'm wanting to buy 2 Loquat trees
« on: January 29, 2022, 05:48:11 AM »
Nothing wrong in that. Loquats can be grown in containers. You're in the UK, right. You should have access to a variety that apparently blooms in the spring. I can't remember the name of it thought.

I am hunting these trees but they seem to be rare in the trade in the US. It seems like they pop up then go away. It's not something that is constantly available like guavas or "you name it". It seems like grumichama is getting "rare". I used to see them at nurseries all the time. Anyway. Whoever knows who's selling them ( I mean a reputable grower or nursery) let me know.

BTW
What's the possibility of importing from Australia? How would I go about doing that? I mean like ordering 200.

Hey. How's going. I wish you the best of success and welcome.

I did am experiment. I covered a Bumper, Orange frost and Arctic frost with black trashcans during the last 5 days of Alternate snow and wintery mix in zone 7a/b. I also added a 5 call bucket of water. My theory was that on the snowy cloudy days they would be protected from the cold winds and they would have a higher temp on the sunny days than the projected outdoor temp. The controls were a ponkan in a 7 gal pot, and kishu in a 7 gal pot (both next to a cinderblock wall),an in ground ponkan and in ground trifoliate. The temps in Fahrenheit were :
Date       16        17        18        19        20        21        22
Temp 30° | 19°   36° | 27°   42° | 25°   51° | 28°   46° | 30°   31° | 21°   34° | 16°

The trifoliate did the worst with significant leaf curl. All other plants had no leaf curls. The uncovered plants had some yellowing (ie they were less green ).

Bumping this old thread up!

I have fruited my seedling from Marcos this past year. It was delicious and I had the same impression as Marcos in that it was sweet and had an apricot-y flavor, less tannins and "tartness" that you might find with the classic E. involucrata.

I have no idea what to think of it's classification but it does morphologically represent E. involucrata minus the fruit color itself, which as far as I know, isn't usually criteria for being a different species.

sell us some seeds :)

Carolinazone, I just cut some of my Supersweet branches today, if you want to buy some I can sell it for $4 each plus $9 shipping.
Also have the Younghan's Gold and Bonita Springs. Send me a PM if you're interested in the cuttings this week.
How do you like Younghan's Gold?  I'm thinking I should go with that one.
I am curious too. I have had conflicting information about Younghan's vs Young Hands, vs Younghan's Gold. Some say they are the same some say they are different.  Just to confirm what do you think about grafting in low temps? All my stuff is in the unheated greenhouse and I running about 33 degrees F average.

Well, johnb51. I think the forum has spoken. They are all good. ;D I am looking for another Suebelle and a supersweet to add to my collection. My supposed USDA and SES 2 just started flowering last summer. I had a chance to get a smathers but now I want one. Superweet is the priority though.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Black Sapote as rootstock for?
« on: January 16, 2022, 05:50:59 PM »
A friend of mine successfully grafted black sapote on a native persimmon this past summer.  Native persimmons routinely pop up along the banks of a small pond on his property, of which he typically grafts superior Asian persimmon cultivars.  Also, his property experiences seasonal flooding which doesn't appear to affect any of the trees.  I'll find out if the seasonal flooding ever causes fruit drop, since harvest sometimes coincides with fruit ripening/harvest.
Really? I thought they were graft incompatible. I have Asian, American, Texas, and black sapote. Sring might be the time for me to make a Frankenstein multi-graft experiment. What about ylang-ylang. Is it also graft compatible?
OOps. Ylang Ylang is in the pawpaw/custard apple family.

Which one? Well, I can tell you it seems like there aren't that many places that seem to keep them in stock based on my travels. If you're dead set on it I would say get any one then graft on later. I have only ever tasted the one that was supposed to be a Suebelle. It's the one that is outside of Clausen's Nursery in Vista California. It was delicious. No bitter aftertaste that I heard that they could have. I ate it skin and all . Not the seed though ;D I;m a savage but not that much of a savage. 8)
