For those who dont know -

A lot of times folks send wood for grafting and end result sometimes is a failure of graft. besides other reasons for failure, one thing you could do is prepare the scion before you harvest. This is the best thing you could do to ensure whoever gets the wood has maximum chances of take.

see pictures below, this is how I prep.

I remove the terminal bud from hardened growth, cut all leaves off.

in about 3 days, the ends of leaf stems will fall off. In about 7 to 10 days, the leaf nodes will start to swell. Once they are swelled you harvest wood, seal it and send away. When buds are swelled, the budwood is fully energized ready to roar into growth post grafting. The picture below, it still has few more days of bud swelling left before I will harvest.

On packaging/shipping.

I dip the cut ends (usually bottom) into warm melted wax to seal moisture., then put it in a sandwich bag that also have moist vermiculite in it. I have successfully sent packages to other side of globe and were viable even after almost 2 weeks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / ID this Avacado - Pictures Attached
« on: August 22, 2018, 09:04:51 PM »
Can someone ID this Avacado variety by looking at leaves or spots on branches? It is a top tier but I can't find tag. Stem does not look like Pinkerton nor do the leaves.

I got this as a peach cobbler from TT, tree declined upon delivery so I got a replacement. Replacement has been fine and real peach cobbler. However the declined tree in Green House pushed few shoots before passing away. I was able to graft those shoots and now I have it fruiting. The fruit does not look like peach cobbler at all. Fruit is a bit flat and wide, and is bumpy, looks like Coconut Cream?

It should ripen in about 4-6 weeks but wanted to know if someone can ID it, so I can harvest its wood and spread around if its good.

Citrus General Discussion / Aphids destroying my Citrus
« on: June 06, 2018, 04:20:31 PM »
I grafted and got nearly 100% success on my mandarin cocktail tree, however the new growth is getting all curled up with aphids all over it, green and black colored. Last time I used neem oil and lost branches (probably overdose), I dont want to use need oil in hot So Cal Sun.

what are other recommendations to get rid of aphids?

Dang it, winds knocked down a branch of my sweet tart.

Here is up for grabs, 4 PC's of wood that includes one piece that has 4 branches. I have successfully grafted 4 branches and takes are excellent. Wood picked 5 min ago and wrapped in buddy tape.

$20 + $4 shipping. First come first serve. PM me.

Besides several tropical fruit trees, I have flowers and grow vegetables. Majority of my system is Drip, while I have sprinklers in some portion of my yard that is lawn.  On drips, biggest challenge is fertilizing, specially in Southern California where it does not rain much except winter time.

I just ordered 2.5 Gal EZ-Flow Fertilizer Injector System. My plan is to install this in my main line after the backflow preventor. and then fertilize my zones according to my needs. I have about 19 zones, and have Rachio automatic controllers where I can pretty much set however I like on my phone. Goal is to deliver fertilizer (liquid) directly via drips when I need and when I dont I can simply shutoff the unit.

Has anyone else used this or is using this? https://youtu.be/eEgnu712YGM

Citrus General Discussion / Aphids and Neem Oil Destruction on Citrus
« on: April 09, 2018, 04:52:47 PM »
I had a lot of aphids, I sprayed a bit heavy neem oil, that caused leaf and fruitlet drop. I thought oh well, at least aphids are gone. after 10 days these suckers are back with an army. what do you recommend? as it will be getting warmer here, neem oil might cause burn.  Thoughts?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Bud Grafting T-Bud Graft Method
« on: April 09, 2018, 11:40:11 AM »
Hello All Master Grafters,  I know T and Inverted T bud grafting is done on citrus, roses and many other fruits and flowers, however has anyone tried T-bud graft on mangoes?

I tried T-bud graft mango recently (2 days ago), and bark was peeling quite easily. I did both chip bud and T bud grafts. I will report progress here on how it went, but wanted to know if anyone else has had success in T-Bud grafting of Mangoes.

Folks, new to this citrus forum. Have question for the pros.

What is the best rootstock for grafting mandarins? I can pick a grafted mandarin tree from Home Depot OR I can get a much healthier lemon/lime tree. Idea is to get decent growth out of mandarins. I want to do cocktail.

Any comments or recommendations?  What happens to flavor and production of mandarins if grafted onto lemon interstock!

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Strawberry Papaya - Not Flowering
« on: August 28, 2017, 04:09:29 PM »
I planted few fresh seeds of strawberry papaya about 3 years ago and two survived and are about 5 feet tall now. Wondering why they have not flowered at all. I heard that these flower and fruit within first 12 months based on conditions.

I have them planted on South-West wall planter where it remains warm and in summer heat from stucco reflects on these plants. They get watered twice a week, deep watering.

Any idea what might be wrong?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Beat Pruning Shears / Pruner
« on: May 03, 2017, 10:03:51 AM »
Does anyone know of decent pruning shears? possibly geared?I was diagnosed with Tennis Elbow and dont have enough strength to press/cut using regular pruner. Most I have used require a lot of force.

found this one http://frostproof.com/barnel-straight-blade-ratchet-pruner-b888/

anyone used this or know of any better ones?

I have small 1 Gal Selma Cherimoya for sale. Selma has been in top 3 in 2014, 2015, and 2016 CRFG tastings. Fruit is mild pink flesh with berry flavor, very sweet and delicious. Only 4 available.

Anyone interested, PM me.

72
there are spread out posts here but nothing that talks about all in one place.

I have had bad luck with Lychees with dieback. Trying to give another shot. Lots of folks are growing Kaimana, Sweet Heart, Ha Kip, or Brewster here in So Cal.

Want to know their opinion on these varieties, production, and quality of local grown here. It will help me decide it. Also Ha Kip and Sweet Heart I heard are same?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Syzygium Cumini - Varieties you are growing
« on: September 29, 2016, 12:46:45 PM »
I picked up a 3 gal Syzygium Cumini (Jamun, Java Plum) plant from Mimosa last year and it fruited this year. it was delicious. I wanted to see what other varieties of Syzygium Cumini folks are growing. I am interested in big fruits that have dark purple/blue flesh. In India they have a variety that is almost seedless.

I am trying to make a cocktail tree of Syzygium Cumini in my yard. If anyone of you are growing it, please share pictures and fruit characteristics. We may be able to exchange wood as well. Most recently I grafted longboy variety.

the image below is supposedly longboy!

74
Not sure about others, but growth of mango trees at my yard has been pathetic, even the ones that are not holding fruit. some branches or plants go no flush at all. twice new flush fried due to high temps. it is depressing to see them not flush even when we are mid August.

How is your mango plant doing in So Cal this season? Want to make sure its not just me OR I need to do something about it.
