Oro Negro vs. Sir Prize Avocado
« on: March 31, 2022, 11:21:45 PM »
Have all “A” Flower avocados…looking for “B” flower avocado for yard. In Mid Boynton Beach, FL…leaning toward Oro Negro but wondering if Sir Prize would be better?

Does Sir Prize do well here?  I thought it was a Cal avo.

I can't speak to Sir Prize in FL, but the fruit grown in CA is very good.

Our ON tree has been in-ground several years now. 3rd year flowering. Not great production prior; this season has hundreds of tiny fruit. If 10% hold to maturity, would be elated. Fruit is very good.

ON looks healthy. Growing on limestone. Hardly ever water or fert it. No pest treatment. Pretty tree when trimmed right. It does grow a bit fast for me, needs yearly trimming.

I know this isn't the last word on Sir Prize in Florida, but it's worth considering.  https://www.myavocadotrees.com/sir-prize-avocado.html
It's possible it might do well outside of the Homestead area.

I have both but just planted last summer. Oro Negro is doing fine but Sir Prize hates its life.  It's held on but hardly any growth once the humidity kicks in. I don't think it's going to make it. Honestly, there could be a lot of factors contributing to it's downfall. I just know I won't be buying another.

My oro negro at 12 months after graft. Enjoys Sebastian FL climate. Crossed with a hass in backyard.

Thriving.

I read and read and read about what avocados do well in Florida over the last few years; it's all a murky mess in my head, but I am certain Sir Prize has never been mentioned as a good choice in Florida. I would think Nishikawa vs Oro Negro is a better debate, I believe it's also a B and has a similar season to ON.

Sir prize really not good even here in CA.  Just my opinion.  Going to top work my trees.  The fruit are decent but the tree sucks.

Let me update you on Sir Prize. I had the tree for years in Homestead, flowered a lot, but did not set any fruit.

Took a few years, but getting good fruit set:

Tree is 10 feet tall.

Hard to get a decent pic to clearly see where tree ends and other stuff begins.

I don't like ON. A matter of taste. My tree is a heavy producer. Grafted in Dr. MELENDEZ rootstock. And now the tree is a stand for Willughbeia vine.

So I guess you'd say your Lolo avocado is a lot better than ON?  (I'm hoping to get a tree from Julian Lara when he has some.)

How about a Sharwil? I’m not sure they do well there…

Here's my 2 cents: I had bought an Oro Negro at least 15 years ago from Pine Island Nursery at our annual (Melbourne) Tropical Fruit Club sale. The tree has done great, BUT, I have gotten a total of 3 avocados to date. For years now, the tree has set a lot of fruit, but it almost never makes it to maturity. I have since heard that it's not a productive variety. I tried topworking it last summer (my first attempt at grafting) without success. I spoke to Alex at Tropical Acres Farm and learned that mid summer wasn't the time to attempt that, so I'll try again this fall/winter. Right now, I have a lot of tiny fruit on the tree, but I know how this story goes...
So my advice would be neither of the above choices. Someone with more experience would have to suggest a variety.

You might be right, CV.  ON may be too unreliable.  When I tried to grow it, I didn't meet with success.  A friend planted a tree around 2012, and this is the first year it even had blossoms.

Agreed. Right down the road from you in Melbourne, never any luck with my ON. My super haas, Brogdon, Nishikawa, and even my Sharwil have had success. Got rid of the ON to make room for a peach tree.
